I am in the process of making a war generator to show battles between nations. If you want to be a tester or have any php / html experience (you dont need any to test it) - I am also looking for help to design it.

It is called NS Battle and I am hosting it on my server. If you want to be a tester, telegram my country (xenose). It is not very graphical at the moment, but it will get better as i add features to it.

Right now it is just 1 nation on 1 nation - it shows the battles so you cn copy and paste it into a forum and then you can give the link for the next nation to attack back. (or however you think would be the best way to use it).

I need 10 testers to give ideas and feature request to make it better. I could also use a fellow programmer to help with the features. So the first 10 people to telegram my nation gets to test it!

Let me break it down to you it uses your nationstates scores in loyalty & your defense budget along with a little randomness (for the randomness of war) and your troops (approx 2 - 2.5% of your population) - then breaks them down into 10 divisions to use...

it is still pretty basic! no end_code to show the victor (should be obvious) and there are still a few bugs - and the graphics / text is still pretty basic...but it seems to work!!!

actually because there are 10 divisions per military... it is 1/10th of the total... If you count the zeros, there will be one less in the division versus the total

I found that out by waiting for 5 min to load an ending.. Lol, another thing: make more messages for daily reports, i belive i saw "Our fighter jet squadron reports did damage to enemy front line of defense!..." 4 times in 9 turns.

I got an idea,How about sabotaging the enemy's weapons productions so they can slow down logistics support which weakens the enemy,or destory the enemy's power plants to slow production of weapons. :)

good ideas...but lets face it, some people just have too much of an army to just have 50k per unit...besides htis is just for a quick battle - i will impliment the update thingy soon...but i dont see having more than 10 divisions as helpful or anything but complicated...OH! btw...whoever keeps trying to send the application, stop - before i ban your ip forever.

Of course, if youre aiming towards Modern-Tech, this might not work.

Yeah modern tech is usally better becuase there is no arguments about it! we all know its here and widly aval to nations (even nations that arent wealthy)

Of course, it is already generalized really. By saying things such as "Naval Force" or "Ground Force," this could relate from Pre-Modern Tech to Future Tech. Works for most already.

Then you could say this...

The Twenty-First Artillery Divison slowly rolled through the plains, coming to stop along a flat part of the high ground. Scouts up ahead relayed the approximate coordinates back to the commanding officer in the division. The sound of the rockets launching was near deafening as the erupted from their launchers, leaving a trail of smoke in their wake.

Unfortunately, the scouts' relayed information had been slightly off, and so only an eighth of the missles launches actually made contact with the enemy, inflicting minor casualties.

i might give 1 or 2 people that help the most an admin status....(this will be when i put in mutiple country battles) like 3 nations vs. 3 at the same time...
admin status will let you basically be god in the war script and help end disputes...

this will be to the people that help the most.

Perhaps try it 3 - 5 times and if the outcome is usually the smaller nation - I will work out some of the stuff - i mean just becuase you are bigger doesnt always mean you will win a war! but i do beleive the random code is a lil too random and needs a lil twaking, i will work on it tomorrow =)

From what I've read so far of these beta-runs, it seems to be primarily troop strength. Perhaps later on you should add in whether a nation is modern, future, or past tech. I'll be goshdarned if my shock marines are cut down by a few crossbowmen. -.- Further, will it ever be possible to add in nation-specific units? Like "Ipwnusian G38 Superiority Tank" or whathaveyou?

Just some thoughts from the sideline, this seems like a great product and I think this thread should be STICKIED.

well, besides troop strength - it also runs on you citizens loyalty and a few other factors... and i know the tech part is vague - its that way so you can use your imagination a lil - right now, this is just a guide.

Oh and BTW remember - its not alwyas the person with the biggest missiles that win - lol. this was ment to use your nation states stats - so its more based on your own past decisions as a leader. in that way, it takes care of godmodding.

- i am also tweaking the attack / defense engine...more details to come

You should add a tactic selection thing, all nations dont use the same tactics (such as conservitave, suicidal, terrorist, gurilla). Also I havent seen it yet but would there be a way of adding a nations map to choose where to attack.

....not yet. I dont see doing a whole game out of this...just making a tool for nationstates members to use.

there will be more choices in the future right now its still random to test out the main battle engiine

There should a button that says Fire a nuke on (INSERT NATION HERE) and it wipes out 2 divisions and the number of nukes depends what is your Defense level but there are conquenses for using nukes. One is Trade,if the world doesnt like that,they cut off trade to your nation and your nation's productions of weapons drops.*

Also,if possible,there should be a defcon meter,it tracks the tension of the world,if you fired a nuke,they go to defcon level 4,which they ready their armies to invade your nation,if you fired 2 nukes,it drops to level 3,where the worlds armys are on alert,if you fired 3 nukes,it drops to level 2,thats when the worlds armys are on MAX alert,if you fired more than 3 nukes,the armys of the world will invade you and kill you,and ending the war** :)

*its better to add that if you let about 4 nations into the CODE of it so 4 nations can go into war,2 are attacking,and 2 are defending

good idea...i might impliment this in the future...(that will take some time) - my main dream is to be able to have 3 nations vs. up to 3 nations and a selection of actions (also a page to print out of the war so far between them all to date) this will require a database and a turn based engine (3 - 4 weeks away if not more) - right now im just testing the core battle engine.

you are correct, currently i dont have the time to write 3 seperate text or PMT, FT & MTx 20 different outputs (or more) - so untill i get a some dedicated help - you will have to use your imiganination and add to the daily war report to make it FT, MT, or PMT.

in the future you will have options for who to attack and type (artillery, air, land, or defense, perhaps even combined attack) and you will be able to choose to 2 times per turn (defense will temporarily fortify your positions to decrease attacks against your unit by a percentge of course - kinda like it does now it give you 30% less damage when u are defending and planning) - but this is way in the future - just testing the core engine right now.

yah i missed that too, Like your men are not going to contineously fight with out affecting their morale. Say you have to have at least like 50% morale to attack and the more you attack the more the morale goes down untill it can regenerate after a time.

But as far as the CSS goes, it really is a 5 minute job. www.stewarts.net/zac/ns/style.css. Just pop a <div> tag around some stuff, position it with CSS, add a border and background color, and you have an easily modified box. Getting it to look right is another matter altogether.

Anyways, I'll change it up in the next few days. Feel free to copy the HTML and CSS.

Great idea!!! But troops will fight with low morale - just a lot would surrender / flee - also it should effect how much damage they do!

But as far as the CSS goes, it really is a 5 minute job. www.stewarts.net/zac/ns/style.css. Just pop a <div> tag around some stuff, position it with CSS, add a border and background color, and you have an easily modified box. Getting it to look right is another matter altogether.

Anyways, I'll change it up in the next few days. Feel free to copy the HTML and CSS.

(your name will go in the credits) now if i can get some fast hosting space (dont need a database, this is gonna be free so - AND once its done the scripts will be avail to download) im opting to use flat files for the wars - so anyone can host it.

Great idea!!! But troops will fight with low morale - just a lot would surrender / flee - also it should effect how much damage they do!

you might notice no changes latley,

now that the core is done - i am working on a new frontend it will take a couple of weeks, but it will have:
up to 3 nations vs 3 nations plus attack options
+ the battles will be password protected (battling nations will decide a password so it can be a closed rp and no so one can make the decisions but the countries involved)
+ a battle report page for everyone to see the reports and progress!
+ a few other things

- so enjoy the simple one for now & keep the ideas and things coming!

This is an update report.
The data will be saved in flat files (so to host this, you will not need a database) The inital start page along with start of the turn based war is done. I hope to finish the adding of other players tonight...(we shall see)

You guys are looking at errors in the test of the (Battle Engine) not the messages & yes, I know about the link error of changing the names...this will be the case untill the .6 or .7 release - at which time it is all going to be dont at the server end...Keep up the good work!

version .5 is almost done - it will have 3 nations vs 3 - and a turn based system,
you will be able to select 2% - 10% of population for your troops - however the higher the % of troops - the lower your attack and defense levels will be

AND ONLY the defending nation (nation that is fighting on its own soil) will be able to select 10%.

If you select 10% and you are not that nation - it defaults down to 5% of population.

.5 is about 85% done...it might be done b-4 monday

lol! for security, i have ftp on the server disabled... and the password to the main fileserver is for downloading only (even with the pass, you couldnt save files to this server - only dl stuff.)

i work on the files directly, or from a coumputer on my lan...this is how i am able to access the files.

Okay, I think I've sent the code to you. My Microsoft Outlook program is dead, and so I am forced to use a web-based interface. However, this interface doesn't tell me if I have sent anything or not, nor does it allow me to preview anything. So I have no idea what you're going to get. Let's pray it sent something!

Also, I forgot to address your battle pages in that email. I think I may have said something about the pages needing work, but I didn't send any code or anything. What I envision is rather simple, and all I need to do is add to the CSS and have you change like 2 lines of code on the battle page. I'll send you another email, as soon as I get confirmation my last email got through and everything was fine.

By modern standards, 5% is considered a bloodbath (although on one island in WW2, Japanese soldiers suffered over 99% casualties before they surrendered). Your troops should mutiny before they're actually all dead, although how many casualties are tolerable should be determined by morale, if you're defending, etc. There could be a "surrender" button (which may be accepted or declined by the opposing side and will launch RP'ed negotiations) and if the war is hopeless, the surrender is automatically forced on you by the army.

Yeah, that is a great idea! However, 5% of your troops in some countries might be a massive number - (you will always have the option of surrender or retreat) if you are the defending nation and you surrender - the war is over.
at that time the attacking country may role play it in the forum that they continued attacking you and slaughtered all of your troops or stated negotiations.

If you are not the defending nation and you leave the war - to keep the code simple - you cannot rejoin the war

(this is because whenever you start / join the war is the only time ns battle will acually pull your stats from nation states - so if you had only 10% of your troops left and left then re-joined, you would have 100% back - and i can see the nightmares this would make)

besides, some rp'ers might state that their country would fight to the last soldier - if this is the case, they will be able to do this.

I don't think I can host it. I'm pretty sure my host doesn't support PHP. I'm moving soon, and when I move I might move to an area where I will have enough bandwidth to have my own server. At that point, I can install anything I want on it.

Also, did the email get through? Based upon the fact that the test1.html is not updated, I'm guessing no. Or you just didn't get around to updating it yet.

i havent gotten around to updating the html....still working on the next version - (its a different link) thats why you dont see changes to this one.

the php hosting thing - heres a way to find out:

in notepad copy and paste this:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

save the file as... "test.php"
(dont foget the " marks or it will be "test.php.txt) and that wont work.

upload this file to your server
then goto yourwebsite.com/test.php - replace yourwebsite with well....
your websites name

if it shows anything, you have a php enabled server.

Hey, you cannot run that php script I gave you locally! you have to store it on your server and then access it! (becuase windows does not know how to use the php file where as your server will)

I have taken a few days off to work on paying projects mostly - right now, i dont have a lot of time to rewrite a lot of the code needed to take the bugs out of the next release...so unless i find another php programmer, it will take some time.
