Resently wars have and gone, and with them, the need for primitive over futuritive has been seen. It ends up a bomb has a better chance of destroying a tank than a missile does these days, and even further more, a cannon onboard an F-18 can take out a MiG-29 because of its radar disruptor and IR coolant system.
Tanks now can prematurly destroy guided missiles and take them out too with lasers of some sorts. This is why the rocket bomb consept was created; an unguided rocket with the role of a bomb; dead seeking, warheaded to that of a bomb, and a motor to hit it at mach 4+.
A new series of projects are underway to create rocket bombs of different sizes, to be named after their bomb counterparts. 520lb, 1,000lb, 1,500lb, and 2,000lb, and no more.
They will all travel supersonically, and fly in a straight line. A launcher will have to be developed to automatically aim the rocket bomb to a target which can be an armored convoy (more than likely something will topple over if anything), building, or troop imcampment.
As to ensure aircraft safety, it must have a range beyond that of most advanced SAMs and also run at a speed equal to, if not faster, than most SAM missiles.
