OOC: The Military Strategists Awards

Sarzonia

I tried to put up a wide-ranging awards thread a while ago and since that is a very gigantic undertaking, I figured for this round, I'd try to do a relatively bite-sized awards thread this time around. This thread will focus more on military strategies, but there will be a few bones thrown to people whose posts show a certain promise that isn't strictly strategy or tactics.

I do have a few ground rules: 1) No one may nominate himself or herself for any award. Please nominate someone else for an award.

2) Please give some thought to writing justification for your nomination. It doesn't have to be as long as one of my posts in Operation Hellfire, but showing thought is greatly appreciated.

3) No one may nominate a player for more than one award. If someone is nominated in one category and you wish to nominate the player for a different category and you haven't already named him or her, you're welcome to. For instance, if someone nominated Praetonia for Best Naval Strategist and someone else wanted to nominate him for Best Overall Strategist, you can do that. However, if you've nominatd him for Best Naval Strategist, you'll need to pick someone else for Best Overall Strategist.

Here are the categories, which can be added to before any official votes are taken:

Best Army Strategist Which NS player has the cunning of Rommel or reminds you of a Montgomery or a MacArthur? Or who is the second coming of Robert E. Lee? The best ground combat strategist and/or tactician goes here.

Best Naval Strategist Which NS'er seems to have come from Lord Nelson's stock? Who has the cunning of a Isaac Hull? Your pick for top naval RP strategist goes here.

Best Air Force Strategist Who is the top flying ace of NS? If there were a Red Baron, who would he salute with approval? Let us know here!

Best Space RP Strategist If Modern Tech or PMT, which RPer is the best at attaining and maintaining space superiority? For Future Tech, who would have the best chance to take a primitive glorified space shuttle against a Death Star and pwn it?

Best Special Ops Which RPer is the best at forming strategies or implementing special ops-related posts? Let us know.

Best Organizer Even on NationStates, combat isn't just sending forces headlong into each other to smash the crap out of each other willy nilly with not thought to method. There's a method to the construction of an army, a navy, or an air force. This award honours those who are especially good at such organisation.

Best Negotiator War isn't all about blowing people to smithereens. There is a large element of negotiations, from peace treaties to surrender terms. Who is the best at this? I realise that "best" can be anything from surrender terms to negotiation RPs. Please include your reasons here if nowhere else.

Best Scene-Setter Roleplaying on NS is all about telling a story. As such, war RPs shouldn't just be about whose tech pwns j00 or how many people died in an attack. This category honours those who can illustrate Life During Wartime (apologies to the Talking Heads) well enough where you can almost hear the bullets whizzing by your head or the political soul-searching that can and should go into any declaration of war.

Best Overall Strategist This category may be a misnomer because it doesn't necessarily have to cover *every* RP aspect. But those who have a strong mastery of more than one combat style or category should be nominated for this.

We can give this a go and see how this works. Hopefully, by starting smaller, it can work better than an overarching category dealing with all aspects of RP.

Two things.

#1: If I don't get nominated this time someone will hang for it! ;)

#2: Nelson sucks, De Ruyter would own his sorry ass.

Now that I have that out of the way, I'll be posting a list later on when I'm not tired, lazy and hungry.

Might I reccomend you seperate the Naval Strategist catagory into Surface and Submerged portions? The strategy involved is quite different and so is the roleplaying.

Might I reccomend you seperate the Naval Strategist catagory into Surface and Submerged portions? The strategy involved is quite different and so is the roleplaying.I definitely respect the recommendation and can see where you're coming from, but at least for right now, I think that might make the voting excessively complex. There are multiple aspects of ground combat (such as urban, jungle, insurgency, and conventional) as well. One of the problems I had with the previous awards in my opinion was that it became a much bigger project than I expected.

But that doesn't mean I won't consider separate categories for surfaced and submerged combat RPs.

OOC: Interesting awards, but I'd like to suggest two more awards. Best Organizer and Best Political Scene Setter. Both are important since they all affect the course of the conflict in one of another - the former deals with how comprehensively one has laid out his armed forces (NOT numbers, but its leadership, structure, doctrine, etc. etc.) to a great depth, while the latter basically deals with how well one can RP the internal/domestic politics that goes into a war.

Some thoughts, I suppose.

OOC: Interesting awards, but I'd like to suggest two more awards. Best Organizer and Best Political Scene Setter. To be honest, those are really good awards, though the Political Scene can be a subset of the Scene-Setter category.

But Organizer definitely belongs as a category unto itself.

EDIT: I've incorporated Political Scene Setter into Scene-Setter and I've added Best Organizer.

Best Army Strategist- Generic Empire. I'm so glad he's my ally, I would never want to go against his soldiers in combat. They're feared the world 'round. They're very good by themselves, and then they utilize fantastic strategy to further increase their effectivness.

Best Naval Strategist- Praetonia. I havn't seen him RP naval in a very long time, but I remember last one I read (Months ago) I was like "Wow...If you can use a navy, it's important. He properly used his ships to take on any navy that would stand against his, and win.

Best Air Force Strategist- Doomingsland. He has some might fine planes and he knows how to use them. I think I remember him going against some nation roughly his size with like half the amount of planes and winning.

Best Negotiator-Iuthia, he definately finds the pen mightier than the sword. You all know him and have seen him negotiate, you know why he's here.

Best Scene-Setter- AutomagFreek. He is a very good writer, and although I don't always get a chance to read what he writes, or find I'm reading a war against an allied nation, I enjoy to read it. He paints a vivid picture in my mind.

I know I left out some catagories, but they'll probably get filled in later.

Sarz, could you put in an ineptitude award (the only one I may have a shot at winning ;))?

Nominations...I nominate Sarz for best naval RPer, as he is a crafty little devil, I do so believe! As for best special ops...that has to go to Soviet Bloc in my opinion, he has kickass soldiers and the know-how to get a nasty spec ops job done, his army is small and compact and his war tends to be our spec ops, as he operates on a smaller, much more fine and potent scale.
Sarzonia
15-09-2005, 23:04
NOTE: These are my own nominations, but the "winners" will be total number of votes/nominations, so I'm not going to be steering this in any way.

Best Army Strategist Inkana. He's going to be taking part in training my armies ICly, but he's also going to be sitting me down OOCly and giving me pointers and basics on ground combat tactics. A voracious reader of anything related to the military or military history, it definitely shows up in his writing and in conversations with him.

Best Naval Strategist The Evil Overlord. I have to give props to someone who's actually served in the United States Navy (though I would also salute someone who's served in the Royal Navy as well), especially with his eye for logistics and his attention to detail.

Best Air Force Strategist Doomingsland. I second the nomination of him because of his background with aircraft and someone who can make a decent air force RPer look silly (ICly, at least) deserves mention.

Best Space RP Strategist Artitsa. Someone who is well-aware of gaining space superiority and does a great job of that. I'd give honourable mention to Skinny87 with his PMT space warships.

Best Special Ops Pacitalia. His special ops RPs (among his others) are beautifully written. I felt like I had a LOT to live up to when I had to RP his forces.

Best Organizer Omz222. His orders of battle consistently give me a lot to live up to and his knowledge of such matters is quite expansive. I'd give honourable mention to Isselmere since I'm basing my army organisation off his.

Best Negotiator Iuthia. Negotiations is his big strength from what I've seen in my near 18 month stint here on NS. You'd do well to learn from him.

Best Scene-Setter Generic Empire. He did such a phenomenal job of painting a picture of devastation from tungsten rod impact on Generia City that I felt compelled to copy and save it into MS Word. He has a real future as a writer.

Best Overall Strategist Praetonia. As Soviet Bloc once said, he has an excellent all-around command of strategy and great all-around knowledge of military matters. I thank my lucky stars he's my ally; facing him in a war would at best be a Pyrrhic victory for me and at worst would be a devastating loss.

I can only think of one definite nominee at the moment, but I hope to fill in the gaps later.

Best Scene Setter: I'm going to have to counter Sarzonia's nomination (for which I am both flattered and surprised) and instead nominate him for this award. His descriptions of President Sarzo's eternal conflict with himself, his staff, and his people over how best to govern his nation through the treacherous waters of international politics and warfare have always struck a chord in my mind as being works of utter genius. He consistently demonstrates a clear understanding of the psyche of the leader and at the same time describes the pressures placed upon an average and yet exceptional man in a position of power and how he manages to overcome his enemies, friends, fear, doubt, victory, defeat, and eventually his own position at the head of Sarzonian government to bring his people into another day in a world where conflict and madness walk side by side.

Best Naval Strategist: The best I've seen would most likely be New Empire.

Best Air Force Strategist: I haven't seen much in the way of aerial role play in the aspect of who's the best, most that I've seen has been largely mediocre. So, I abstain from this vote.

Best Space RP Strategist: I personally dislike how all FT nations (that I've read...I'm sure there are awsome role players in that classification) role play. I think it's all short and with mostly broken English grammar. So, I'll abstain from this one as well.

Best Special Ops: The only Special Operations role playing I've read is my own, and then Doom's in my Passion Play thread, so I'll go with Doom.

Best Organizer Even on NationStates: I guess I'll go with Omz222 since I've only seen his order of battle. I have one as well, but haven't posted it ever. But, yea, Omz222.

Best Negotiator: Hmmm, I would have to go with Dumpsterdam because he's recently negotiated a peace between Little India and myself, which is quite a large feat since LI was largely without support, against an almost 5 billion person nation. So, yea, Dumpsterdam. He also did quite a bit of negotiations during the prospective war with Chellis which didn't materialize because Chellis left the game for a while.

Best Scene-Setter: No clue, the only one I've seen is AMF, so I'll go with AMF.

Best Overall Strategist: By far SafeHaven in my mind. His role playing is simply awsome, although he does sometime use 'thru' ( :-P ). Regardless, SafeHaven is sound in strategy, and he's well rounded in all aspects.

For Best Space Strategist I have to decide between two people, my ally, (nominally, at least) Coreworlds, and my most despised nemesis, Chronosia. In the end, I pick CW, because Chron deserves another title.

Best Negotiator: Chronosia, he may not be MT, but he is one hell of a devious tricky betraying backstabby bastard, I hate him with a passion IC, but OOC, I gotta admit he's damn good.

Best Army Strategist: Generic Empire. Argue with that nomination and I will personally slit your throat.

Best Air Force Strategist: Doomingsland. His ability to use his airforce is excellent.

Best Space RP Strategist: Soviet Bloc (MT)

Best Special Ops: I would be nominating myself for this category, but since I can't, the award goes to Pacitalia.

Best Organizer Even on NationStates: Tie between Omz222 and Layarteb

OK, here's my final list:

Best Naval Strategist: Sarzonia. He frequently blows me away with his vast knoweldge of all things naval, and has even been kind enough to design my entire navy for me. He is also a great help whenever I have a question on fleet organization or anything like that. All in all, he's easily one of my most worthy adversaries.

Best Scene Setter: Generic Empire. This guy never fails to amaze me in his detailed descriptions of stuff, from the most mundane of conversations, to the insertion of air cav into a wartorn city. In my opinion, he's one of the best writers in NS.

Overall Strategist: Praetonia. Now, I was going to put him in as Best Naval, but was struggling to figure out weather Sarz or Prae was better. Failing to come up with a winner, I suddenly remembered that Prae was quite skilled with ground stuff, as well. That said, his skill in naval and land combat make Praetonia the best overall strategist.

These are three guys I love RPing with, in fact, Prae and Sarz are probably gonna be facing me and GE in some grand conflict of uberness sometime after WWVII blows over, so that should be one hell of an RP.

Best Space Strategist: Chronosia. My closest FT ally and a superb space RPer, its people like him that make me wish I had more time for FT RPing.

Again, thanks to everyone who voted for me (I didn't know I was that good with air!), I appreciate it very much.

I've come up with a few more conclusions:

Best Air-Force Strategist: Doomingsland has my vote too on this one. His understanding of the technical minutiae of aircraft as well as a firm grasp of detailed aerial strategy in combat and non-combat/support roles.

Best Negotiator: Iuthia carries my vote as well. His performance following ViZion's attempted nuclear strike on my nation in negotiations to prevent the outbreak of nuclear war between two bitter rivals was outstanding. Hats off to him.

All I have for now.

My votes! *jumps for joy and then sits down again*

Best Scene-Setter: If I could, I would nominate two people, AMF and Azazia. I'm shocked that only one person has mentioned Azazia to this point. His posts on his General Elections literally blew me out of my seat. It was like reading a Tom Clancy thriller, however, I could relate more to it because of its modification to suit the NationStates context of writing. He's a brilliant RPer and I don't think he gets as much credit as he deserves. I nominate Azazia.

Best Negotiator: If I'm not around to force my cunning voice of reason on my allies ( read: irritating neutrality ;) ), there is one guy I can count on to be there in my stead. That would be Hamptonshire, and he gets my nomination for this. I was also thinking about nominating Iuthia, but I feel that Hamptonshire deserves some recognition.

Best Air Force Strategist: I nominate Doom. Without question. Period.

Best Organiser: For this, there's no doubt who deserves it the most in my books (and apparently, a few others, as well). He consistently amazes me with his concise but consistently fantastic posts, and he RPed in the Hiroshikan war nearly perfectly. I'm going to nominate Omz.

Best Overall Strategist: I can't decide. I think a lot of people are qualified to win this.

Best Naval Strategist: Same thing.

Best Special-Ops: MassPwnage, since you can't vote for yourself and I don't really deserve this award as much as you (thanks for the 2 noms, though :) they are appreciated), I'll nominate you.

Best Army Strategist: Generic Empire. You are the bomb (literally). :p

Best FT/Space Strategist: Those who know me know how much I hate mixing StarWars-like RPing with NationStates, and thus the entire FT network on this forum, but I guess Chronosia can have a free vote. ;)

And that looks like all. Congrats to all the nominees!
Inkana

Thank you so much for the nomination, Sarzonia!

Best Scene-Setter: Generic Empire, his scenes in his "Imperial Soldier" thread are just....astonishing. He really should become a published writer.

Best Negotiator: I'd say Praetonia. Nothing makes a nation sign a peace treaty faster than brutal force.

Best Air Force Strategist: Doom.

Best Organiser: Tokarev. He has named EVERY ship in his at least 3,000 ship fleet, and given each fleet a commander. Amazing.

Best Overall Strategist: Hmmm...I've noticed that Doom plans ahead, and I don't really know of any other truly land powers, other than myself. So my vote goes to Doomingsland.

Best Naval Strategist: Sarzonia, without a doubt. I wouldn't be suprised if he became administer of the Annapolis Academy one day.

Best Special-Ops: Not sure, I haven't read that many special-ops posts.

Best Army Strategist: Generic Empire. When it comes to truly titanic offensives on a scale greater than Barbarossa, you are the man.

Best FT/Space Strategist: Pass.

*sighs* I suppose I need to step up my Role Playing, lmao.

ANywho, lemme see here....whom do I know that deserves an Award....

My Nomination for Best Scene-Setter
Long ago I was honored to witness Steel Butterfly at his/her best....my Lord, it was beautiful how he/she did things. She/he really set a scene that you could easily dive into. But, if Steel Butterfly is no longer around, I suppose its a tie between Euroslavia and Automagfreek.

My Nomination for Best Space RP Strategist
Whew, thats a tough one.....the things I've seen....geeze. So many great Role Players, so many....... *sighs* I suppose currently its Chronosia, hands down. But there were a great many before him, and I just wish I remembered them so I could honor them here...

My Nomination for Best Overall Strategist
Phalanix, hands down. His armies: Glorious. His scenes: Wonderful. His Role Playing: Beautiful. I can't even describe it to you.

If he's not around anymore, I suppose its a tie between Chronosia, Euroslavia, Reploid Productions (I think I saw her RP once, and if it was her I loved it.), Neuterd Sputniks, Steel Butterfly, Praetonia, and especially Automagfreek.

My nomination for Best Army Strategist
Hogsweat, no doubt. He'd pwn your sorry butt in a second with his Soviet-Style conquests. I don't know if he's still an NS'er, but I sure as hell loved his army's! They seemed to be invicible at times, but you know.
-----------------------

There are many more, but these people I nominate had the most impact on me during Role Plays that I seen them do. They put all their hard work into it, and I honor them for it.

(I may edit later as it all comes back to me. But all these people were from a long time ago, most of them anyway.)

Better late than never:

Final Vote

Best Army Strategist
Winner: Generic Empire (4)
Inkana
Bonstock
Hogsweat

His Imperial Praetorians invoke fear in his opponents and his grasp of infantry tactics make Generic Empire a feared opponent for just about anyone in NationStates.

Best Naval Strategist
Praetonia
Winner: Sarzonia (3)
The Evil Overlord
New Empire
The Freethinkers

While other players have natural inclinations toward infantry battalions, Sarzonia can diagram a carrier battle group in his sleep, making his navy one of the most respected in the game.

Best Air Force Strategist
Winner: Doomingsland (6)

The only nominee in this category, Doomingsland brings much OOC insight into aviation and combines technology with skill that few can match.

Best Space Strategist
Artitsa
Coreworlds
Soviet Bloc
Winner: Chronosia (3)

Anyone who gets into a firefight with Chronosia inevitably has to deal with the possibility of being forced to convert to Chaos.

Best Special Ops
Soviet Bloc
Pacitalia (2)
Doomingsland
Winner: MassPwnage (3)

A man who can wreak havoc upon just about any military with any size of special ops unit, MassPwnage gets the credit here for his recent exploits.

Best Organizer
Winner: Omz222 (4)
Tokarev

Need an order of battle, be it army, navy or air force? Omz is your man. Need feedback on your organisation? He'll tell you exactly what you've done wrong or right.

Best Negotiator
Winner: Iuthia (3)
Dumpsterdam (2)
Chronosia
Hamptonshire
Praetonia

The man when it comes to negotiating, Iuthia has strengths both IC and OOC when it comes to negotiating by keeping a level head.

Best Scene-Setter
Automagfreek (2)
Winner: Generic Empire (3)
Sarzonia
Azazia (2)
Steel Butterfly

Nominated for his ability to paint a scene from extremely irate lobsters to vivid descriptions of all the goings on of his characters or the scene they're in, Generic Empire beats out two outstanding writers for this award.

Best Overall Strategist
Winner: Praetonia (2)
SafeHaven
Verdant Archipelago
Phalanix

Praetonia wins this award for his command of army tactics, his excellence with naval combat, and even wins points for his first-ever aircraft design being one of the best in the business right off the bat.

Congratulations to all those who have been recognised, either as category winners or as nominees.

I know what you mean, I've sent hima few messages to get him to write some more, so far I think he hasn't had the time. I AIMed him a while back and hes an exam student, so the time he has for the forums dips and rises. A lot like mine actually (I hate European Schools).

I was also thinking of a "newb awards" where we recognise the new players who show great promise. I wonder if there's any support for that idea or I'm daft...

Perhaps we should hold these awards monthly to acknowledge the players? Although a lot of RPers don't like 'competition', since RPing is about having fun, it does increase the quality and it does induce changes because of that fact. Regardless, we should organize them a bit more, for example, decide as a group which classifications to have.

Well the present ones that were held just now are good starting categories. You could also add:

Best Character RP Storyteller- This player has a deep and inate ability to make others who read their character stories, actually 'see' what he/she is writing, and has in-depth stories that really cause you to get sucked in.

Best Newb- This new player to NS shows has shined as the brightest bulb and his/her skills at writing and beginning rp'ing have showed great promise after being veiwed by several different veteran NSers.

Just the ones I had in mind.

Best Character Storyteller: Generic Empire... again. (Not that he doesn't wholly deserve such an award)

I know what you mean, but like I said in an earlier post, that Oda noh Nobunaga could give hima run for his money, so to speak, in my opinion. :D
