A Short History of the Republic [Intro/FT]

Fallen Humanity
07-09-2005, 09:30
The Republic of Fallen Humanity, or as it well be know in role-play, the Republic of Acheron, is a single city-state post-Edenist settlement based on the planet LV-426 or Acheron; Acheron orbits the gas giant Novemberesk in the Zeta II Reticuli system in the “Outer Rim”, 22 light-years from Terra and the Sol System. The first colony secured on LV-426 was actually secured around 2200, when the Weyland-Yutani Corporation founded the terraforming colony Hadley’s Hope.

However, for reasons undisclosed, this settlement and its population, along with the fusion atmosphere processors, were utterly destroyed following a supposed encounter with Xenomorphs, which if the accounts of survivor Warrant Officer Ripley are true, was the first encounter with intelligent life made by Humans.

Around 2300, Humans in the form of Edenists returned to LV-426. The settlement was originally established to facilitate the extraction of He3, the rare isotope required for fusion power. The Settlers were originally of Hrstrovokian descent, consisting of refugees from the final days of the Federated Socialist Republic, which collapsed early in the 21st century.

The capitol and only Human settlement on Acheron is called Sanctuary, a sprawling city that extends several kilometers beneath the surface. Here He3 is refined and exported as a fuel for starships and the powering of Fusion reactors to the trading partners of Acheron.

He3 extraction and refinement and related industries dominate the Acheron economy. Though its Government has expressed a policy of neutrality, Acheron has had to develop its own defense industry to ward off would-be aggressors attempting to expand in its space territory. Acheron’s armaments products are not legally open for exportation.

Acheron announced its unilateral declaration of independence in 2581 following the decimation of Adamist Garissia thanks to an anti-matter planetary bombardment perpetrated by Omuta on behalf of the Edenists. So disgusted and ashamed with this heinous act of aggression by their own people which costs the lives of billions; Acheron promptly decided to succeed from the Edenist civilization forever.

A brief civil war ensued as squadrons of Blackhawks alongside Voidhawks were ordered to Acheron in an attempt to quell the succession by force. The succession was supported by the Adamists, rivals of the Edenists, who sought any opportunity to inflict a defeat on their foes, and who also eyed the possession of the He3 plants on Acheron as a means of continuing their war, for Adamists starships were fusion-powered.

Before an all out confrontation could be mounted, Michael Strand, President of the Acheron Consensus, persuaded both sides to accept their independence upon the condition of total neutrality. This argument could only be accepted when Strand revealed that Acheron had paid Omutan Blackhawks to come to their aid in the event of a confrontation, an ironic yet sobering episode in the history of the city-state.

Acheron has many similarities with Terra. Its gravity is .86, it is geologically active [its surface is mostly igneous rock and steam vents have been discovered] and plate tectonic movements have been detected. Its atmosphere consists mostly of Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide and Methane and its temperature is well below the Celsius line. All efforts to terraform Acheron have been abandoned since 2590, when it was discovered that Acheron was host to single-cell organisms whose existence was threatened by the results of Edenist terraforming and polluting. It was no longer considered pertinent to transform Acheron at the costs of thousands of billions of Gils anyhow.

About Edenism –
[Taken from wikipedia!]

Edenists are, for the most part, a single culture. They are an idealized, egalitarian, utopian society which rejects all religion. The majority of Edenists live in huge, multi-kilometer space stations called 'habitats' orbiting gas giants. Each individual habitat is a living organism, fully sentient, and is the perfect arbitrator of its community. Habitats cannot be bribed, are perfect impartial judges, and are completely aware of everything that occurs within them and immediately around them, 100% of the time. The most important aspect of any Edenist is his/her use of affinity. Affinity is an advanced form of mental communication similar to the modern-day concepts of telepathy or entanglement. Edenist affinity allows them to communicate with each other as well as with their technology (known as bitek.) Unlike Adamist culture which is divided into various political units, Edenists form a single governmental entity known as Consensus. Consensus is formed when all Edenists willingly join into a temporary collective-conciousness. This allows total direct representation of their entire population in government decisions. At death, Edenists can use affinity to transfer their memories and personality into the mind of one of their bitek ships or habitats where they live on for many centuries before gradually becoming an integral part of the habitat personality. Since habitats have no maximum lifespan - and could in turn pass on their memories and personality to another habitat if they ever did die - this is regarded as a form of immortality. Adamist religions reject this as an attempt to avoid God's judgement on the soul after death, and it is this which is the root cause of the schism between the Adamist and Edenist cultures.

Edenists have access to faster-than-light travel through large, engineered bitek creatures called Voidhawks, also fully sentient, whom, along with their crew, make up the vast armada of Edenist merchant vessels that operate throughout the Confederation, and a large contingent of the Confederation Navy. Voidhawks are born and live in the vacuum of space. They are naturally attuned to the magnetic fields and energy fluctuations of the space around them, and have precise and exact control of a massive distortion field that emits from their bodies. Utilizing this control, they open wormhole interstices, referred to as "swallows", that allow them to jump from one point in space to another instantaneously, and by utilizing the full power of their distortion fields, Voidhawks can attain a speed and maneuverability that can never be matched by Adamist vessels (unless powered by antimatter).

Edenists heavily genetically modify their children, including the gene which allows affinity to develop from conception. They also use modified "servitors" which are often chimpanzees with affinity which carry out small tasks and leave the Edenists can concentrate on more important matterss. Edenists operate cloud scoops in gas giants in order to extract the rare isotope [helium 3] which can be used for fusion energy.
