IC:
Imperial Palace, Risban City
Lord Richard Gaius Zorag grinned widely as he stepped into his office in the Imperial Palace, having just returned from a short excursion on the island that he owned. Zorag was now the second most powerful man in Risban, having succesfully removed Empress Nora Courtney (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=429450) from the position of Chancellor and proceeding to take her spot. On the same day he had also managed to remove Sargas Caecus Lesath as Chiliarches of the House of Aristocracy, replacing him with one of his political allies, Lady Kierra Graffias.
This man, now Chancellor as well as CEO of the Zorag Company, was also something else. He was the leader of an intricate and vile group known as the Society of Shadows, which had been behind physical, political, and economic attacks on Risban, Upper Xen, Green Sun, the entire region called the Consortium of Shadows, and a plethora of other nations. They had been biding their time, slowly moving their pieces across the international board, capturing several of the opponent's major pieces. And now, it was time to put the opponent in check, and eventually move in for the checkmate.
Emperor Robinson Antares Scorpius and his newly appointed counsel, Sargas Caecus Lesath, were away on business in Truitt. Empress Nora Courtney was on a vacation at their private estate in the country, caring for the Viscount Lucius Myles Scorpius. Charles Regulus MacBryan, High Imperator of the Imperial Courts, was in the hospital for surgery. Grand Admiral Eric Tarda was touring Decessio Insula all the way in the Imperial Armies region, assessing the damage to the fleet done there by the Havenite Pirate attack earlier this year. And Grand General Charles Skops was just another pawn of the Society of Shadows.
In other words, it was the perfect opportunity for Zorag to move in.
Check.
Zorag left for the Chambers of Imperial Parliament.
The Ministry of Intelligence, Imperial Palace-- 2:43 P.M.
Myles Abrahms, the head of Risban's intelligence agency, paced back and forth in his office. Things had been going crazy since the attacks on Emperor Scorpius, Upper Xen, and Green Sun. They had been working non-stop, hand in hand with the Xenizen CIA and the Sunian Forge Force, at locating terrorists who may have been responsible for the attacks.
There was a knock on his office door, and Abrahms told whoever it was to enter. In walked Marcus Janus, the Deputy Director of Intelligence, and two other men: one from the Xenizen CIA and one from the Forge Force. They closed the door behind them.
"We have the latest reports," said Janus, walking over to Abrahms as he sat behind his desk. Janus handed the documents to the Intelligence Director. "Several prominent names on there."
The Xenizen and Sunian stood in front of the desk, hands folded behind their back. Abrahms read over the report, shocked at some of the times. But, he supposed, nowadays, you never could tell.
"Very well. Good work," he said, setting the files down as he looked at Janus. "Anything else?"
"Yes, sir. As you are busy with operations here, I am offering to go to the meeting with General Skops for you," said the Deputy Director. "I'll bring a panel of advisors with me."
Abrahms smiled, nodding. "Yes, thank you," said the intelligence director. "Report to me when the meeting is done."
"Yes, sir," said Janus, bowing. "Good luck."
The Deputy Director turned and left the room, followed by the Xenizen and Sunnian. The latter two both wore confident smirks as they followed the Risbanian out of the intelligence bunker, located beneath the east wing of Imperial Palace. Janus gathered up some fifteen other agents in the complex before leaving.
Abrahms sat in his office, gazing at screens all around him. Randomly, he looked up and see via tracking device on one screen that neither Janus nor any of his agents were heading to the Grand General's office.
"What the bloody hell?" growled Abrahms as he grabbed his cellphone. He was just about to call Janus when the Deputy Director's tracking signal vanished from the screen, as well as those of some twenty others agents who were around the premises. "Damn computers..."
Abrahms was having trouble with the computers today. Earlier, one computer had somehow sent out a transmission calling all active agents back to the Ministry of Intelligence. Even though he was angered by the mistake, Abrahms kept them in to have them write up reports.
Another blip appeared on a different screen. Abrahms arched an eyebrow, looking at it. That was wrong. That symbol usually popped up when something explosive was detected in the complex. But it was virtually impossible to bring such an item anywhere in the complex instead of the laboratory.
And then it clicked in his head.
"Oh no," said Abrahms. He quickly stood, running for a secret passage in his office.
Moments later, a large explosion rocked the Risban Ministry of Intelligence, destroying the entire structure and killing over a hundred people. The entire intelligence agency, save for those out with Janus, had been wiped out.
The Chambers of the Imperial Parliament-- 2:57 P.M.
Lord Chancellor Zorag had called a full session of both chambers of Parliament. Members of the House of Aristocracy and the Imperial Senate had gathered, Zorag and the other leading officials standing at the central podium.
Lord Zorag grinned as he gazed around.
"Honorable leaders of the Grand Imperium of Risban," began the mastermind. "The time has come for a new age in Risban. Our Emperor, Robinson Antares Scorpius, has misused his Imperial power. What did he do? He granted the people of Risban more power than they needed. The result? Thrice terrorists have struck Risban and her allies, killing innocent citizens. And what has the Emperor done? He has responded by weakening Parliament's power and increasing his control of the military. I will not stand by and watch as Emperor Scorpius lets terrorists roam about and this body become a pawn of his! As I said, it is the time of a new age for Risban. As Lord Chancellor of the Imperial Parliament of the Grand Imperium of Risban, I am declaring full martial law over the entire Risban Empire. These terrorists and traitors will be stamped out and punished!"
Senators and Lords and Ladies and Governors gazed around uneasily at eachother. Most of them, anyways. Quite a few of them had smug looks on their faces. These were the people who knew what was going on. These were members of the Society of Shadows.
At each entrance to the Parliamentary Chambers stood two Imperial Lictors, the High Guards of Risban. They had served for centuries, protecting the Emperor and other leaders. They often wore ceremonial armor in the fashion of the ancient Romans, clutching ceremonial swords. Whilst they were extremely lethal with the swords, each had a pistol on them as well.
"My first action under martial law will be to disarm a body that acts as a black hand for the Emperor, doing his wicked deeds and removing his opponents from power," said Zorag. "I am declaring that the Lictors are no longer needed to protect the government. The military can take care of that."
Lictors all frowned, about to responded when commotion arose from every down. Risabanian soldiers, all armed with assault rifles and pistols, swarmed in from the doors, guns pointed at the Imperial Lictors. Vastly outnumbered and having no choice but to temporarily obey the highest-ranking Imperial officer at present, the Lictors dropped their swords and guns, placing their hands on their hands. At this point, several senators stood up in protest.
"SILENCE! We know that there are those among this body who are terrorist sympathizers, plotting to overthrow our government," bellowed Zorag as Grand General Charles Skops and Deputy Intelligence Director Marcus Janus entered with more soldiers and some intelligence agencies. Janus walked over to Zorag, whispering something into his ear. Zorag turned and face the Parliament. "And now our very own Ministry of Intelligence has been destroyed in an explosion. Bombs can only be brought into the intelligence agency by the Director of Intelligence or Lictors!"
The Lictors in the building were escorted out. Meanwhile, Zorag began ordering the arrests of several senators, including the Plebicola of the Senate, Senator Gomez, accusing them of being conspirators against the Risban Empire.
Zorag stood, grinning as he gave the military control of the government, martial law granting him supreme power for the moment. Marcus Janus and General Skops wore similar grins. It had worked.
Across Risban, soldiers replaced police in the streets. Airports and train stations were temporarily shut down. Governors and senators and royals, many of them people who would be threats to the Society of Shadows, were accused of being terrorists via false evidence and arrested.
The Society of Shadows had taken control of the Grand Imperium of Risban; at least while the Emperor was away.
