President Announces Plans for Retirement

Porfirio Díaz, the President of Mexico today told us that he was thinking of retiring by 1910, as well as this he suggested that another political party be created to oppose his government. During Díaz’ term as President the country's infrastructure has improved greatly thanks to investments from other countries. However many people are not happy with the current government, as it is attracting investors because the pay for workers is at the moment very low, which has produced a very steep social division: only a small group of investors are getting rich, but the vast majority of the people remain in abject poverty. Democracy has, until now also been completely suppressed, and dissent has recently been dealt with in repressive, often brutal ways, such as in Guadalajara only yesterday.

Francisco Madero Gonzales, the leader of the new liberal party has welcomed to changes, telling us “This is at last a step in the right direction, the next step will be to install more democracy into the country”. Madero is a liberal capitalist who ran for the Mexican presidency last year. He didn't back down from Díaz during the election despite being subjected to an intimidation campaign, and was elected as candidate for the Anti-reelectionist movement. He has often called for Díaz to share more power with the Mexican elite, but Díaz has so far refused. As a result Madero’s policies have become more radical in recent months, and he has opened the door for other leaders, such as peasants, to run for election. He was arrested in June but released conditionally in July, and is currently in exile in the USA.

Riots in Guadalajara

Chaos engulfed Guadalajara yesterday after a peaceful demonstration against the current government turned into a massacre. Just under 1000 people had gathered in the city centre to demand more civil rights and higher wages for peasants. Riots started after a group of Soldiers fired into the crowd as they surged towards the Town Hall, the residence of the Governor of the region. Francisco Madero Gonzales, the leader of Mexico’s recently formed liberal party condemned the attacks, saying “There is no point offering us more democracy if tragedies such as this are allowed to continue, the government must get its act together”. President Díaz replied by suggesting that the demonstrators had fired upon the soldiers first, a claim witnesses call “Preposterous”.

Military Budget Reduced

The Mexico City times reports exclusively that military funding has again been reduced, for the 10th year in a row. The government have decided that funds would be better spent on constructing a railway from Mexico City to Chihuahua. However the stagnation of the armed forces has many critics, including ex Colonel Fernando Demenez, who said to us “If this continues, Mexico will no longer be taken seriously by the rest of the world. In fact we will no longer be able to ensure the safety of our country and its citizens”. As well as these cutbacks for the army, the navy has announced that it is willing to sell the cruisers “Puebla” and “Monterrey”.

Manuel slid another cartridge into the barrel of his carbine as the rest of his men galloped off into the small village. These rebel scum would soon regret the day they turned their backs on Mexico. He slung his carbine back over his shoulder, pulled a revolver from a holster by his side and dug his spurs into his horse’s flanks.

Everywhere Manuel looked there were people running, his men had done a good job; many of the small shacks were already in flames. He suppressed a cruel laugh as his fired his revolver point blank into the chest of an elderly man. Then, as the sound of the firing pin on the chamber alerted him to the fact he had run out of ammunition, he holstered his pistol and drew his sabre...

Government Reverts to Violence

People in the southern Chiapas province of Mexico have been fleeing in terror from the wrath of government-controlled troops. The town of La Concordia has been razed to the ground, and hundreds of people killed in the process. The troops were sent in to quell protests about low wages in rural area of Chiapas, but have again reverted to terror to achieve their aims. Refugees in the north have began streaming across the Mexico-USA border in anticipation of more massacres such as Guadalajara and now Chiapas. President Diaz has asked that the USA return all refugees to Mexico so they can be charged for treason.

Pancho gazed down the length of his rifle, carefully lining up the sights. He squinted, then carefully pulled the trigger before signalling the rest of his Bandito’s into the attack. Barely a hundred yards away the Officer dressed in a lavish uniform fell, with a neat hole through his forehead. The small barracks descended into chaos, with blue uniformed Mexican soldiers clashing in vicious hand-to-hand combat with the rebels. Pancho thrust his bayonet into the side of a young corporal, then, as quickly as it had begun, the battle was over. Pancho glanced around; his men were currently stripping the bodies of their guns and ammunition, as well as any valuables they could find. “Find the Colonel,” he shouted across to a group of his fellow bandits.

They started towards the main barrack block, and returned moments later leading a cowering man in parade uniform. “Ah, Colonel Merendez” whispered Pancho mockingly, “How nice of you to…join us”. “I don’t know what you want from me, but I’ll do whatever it is, just spare my life,” whimpered the colonel, now almost in tears. “I’m afraid that is out of the question,” replied Pancho, the smile disappearing from his face. “I am sorry, but we must all make sacrifices for the greater good of Mexico” he continued. “Stand him up against that wall, and fetch me my rifle”…

High Ranking Officer Killed

Colonel Merendez, commander of the Sonora province was today found dead, an expedition had been sent out to find him after contact was lost with his remote Headquarters last week. Local villages claim that the Barracks were attacked by rebels lead by the bandit Pancho Villa, who is implementing a guerrilla campaign against government forces to the north of the country. The army has responded by promising to burn any villages found harbouring rebels to the ground. To all who have witnessed these saddening events over the last few months, it almost seems like Mexico is about to devolve into civil war, we at the Mexico City Times say something must be done to stop this happening.

Diaz Dead

The Mexico City Times reports on the death of President Diaz, of natural causes. Diaz (80), is accredited by many to be the father of modern Mexico, his strategy of export-oriented growth led to Mexico's rapid integration into the world economy. The modernization program was based on exploitation of the country's natural resources, using cheap domestic labor and foreign capital and technology for export production.

However in recent years the people of Mexico have become dissolutioned with his regime. The wealth that flowed into urban areas during the his term fostered the growth of an urban middle class of white-collar workers, artisans, and entrepreneurs. The middle class had little use for anything Mexican, but instead identified strongly with the European manners and tastes adopted by the urban upper class. The emulation of Europe was especially evident in the arts and in architecture, to the detriment of indigenous forms of cultural expression. The identification of the urban middle class with the European values promoted by Díaz further aggravated the schism between urban and rural Mexico.

All of this led to the rebellion of 08-09, which ended after the notoious bandit Pancho Villa was executed. Francisco Madero, who aided the revolt told us "We must remember Diaz not for his violent nature, but for the great things he did for Mexico". All foreign Leaders have been invited to the funeral of Diaz, taking place next month. Until then he will be lying in state in Mexico City.

President Madero has pleaded for foreign aid to help Mexico get back on its feet after the disasterous civil war, which largely destroyed the economy. The new leader has the full support of the army, as well as the country.

Italy wants to see a successful Mexico, and will reduce tarrifs on Mexican goods to 3%, unilaterally. While we will keep the tarrifs this low on a permanent basis, we would like to see Mexico do the same. Also, Italy is willing to provide military aid in the form of advisors.

Mexico thanks Italy for its kind offer. We will of course reduce tariffs on Italian goods to 3%. We also welcome the offer of military advisors, who will hopefully be able to train our army in the modern tactics seen during the great war.

President Madero:

Over the past several years, our investors have been warily observing Mexico's ongoing internal problems, anxious that any possible investment made in the area would be siezed and/or destroyed. However, with the death of Poncho Villa and return of social order throughout your nation, we are beginning to think otherwise.

Thus, our company, along with the BNP Paribas Investment firm would like to foster a new, more profitable relationship with your nation and it's diverse economy. Already, Mexico has shown great potential with it's vast reserves of silver, gold and timber, along with a adequate infastructure to move these reasources to consumer markets. We would like to aid you in this process, by providing funds and/or investments, to help further develop these industries into refined, and competitive companies.

Furthermore, with our development expertise, along with the finesse of various contractors within our influence, we could ensure that a greater amount of Mexico's reasources can be harnessed, by way of further developing and modernizing the methods and equipment used to gather them.

In return for our funds and expertise, our investors would like the oppurtunity to purchase shares of all Mexican Industries aided, along with a fee of 5% of the total profits yielded by our new programs.

We hope that you will seriously consider this request, for the betterment of Mexico and it's people.

Signed,

Official message to the Mexican Ambassador in Washington, and from the US Ambassador in Mexico City to the President of Mexico:

The United States government is forced to inform the Mexican government that if it seizes the Galapagos Islands, it will have committed an act of aggression against the Ecuadorian government, which would be in violation of the Pan American Treaty, and that would force the United States and the other treaty nations to come to the defense of Ecuador.

Dear Sirs of the Mexican Government,

For the sake of global peace do not invade the Galapagos. Such action will result in war against the United States which you cannot win. If you truly have a claim to the Islands submit them for international approval. If you do not have a realistic claim to the Islands then either halt your build up now or we will formally condemn your actions as expansion without pretext.

Deepest Regards,

President Steps Down: Elections next month

President Madero has announced his resignation after the Galapagos Islands debacle destroyed his majority in parliament. Sources inside Mexico city claim that Madero has surrered a nervous breakdown after the absurd attempt to start a Mexican empire in the Pacific. The Presidents party, the Democratic Mexican Peoples Party has lost support over the last few months, and is expected to lose the next election, which has been called nexto month.

The right wing, ultra conservative Mexican National Party is now expected to gain power, their leader, ex-General Francisco von Baden (A Mexican of German origin) today told us that if elected he would "Sweep the red sceptre of socialism away from Mexico as one would dispose of a particularly annoying insect". He also said that he would try to repair the damage done to Mexicans reputation by the previous government, and that he would try to improve foreign relations.
