Lesser Ribena vs Kjata MAjor (Closed, RE:Operation Hellfire)

Admiral Sir Geoffrey Simnett was sitting in his office leaning back on his chair and thinking about what colour to repaint his old and cracked office ceiling. He eventually decided that he really should get back to work, being Minister for Defence he reasoned that he ought to at least look like he was working. Giving an audible sigh he rocked his black, leather chair back into it’s normal, upright, position and grabbed the topmost sheet of paper in his inbox. It was a procurement report from the Royal Navy office downstairs in regards to orders from the Portland Ironworks in Sarzonia, requesting authorisation for further purchases. The King had recently sanctioned a budget increase for the military and Admiral Simnett had always favoured the Navy for expansion so he got out his “official” stamp, with the Lesser Ribenan coat of arms emblazoned on it, thumped it down onto the ink pad and again onto the top of the paper. He then marked the report to be sent to the accounting department and stuffed it into his overflowing outbox.

He casually reached over for the next item in the inbox, it was then that the red telephone rang, he answered it at once.

“Admiral Simnett speaking” he responded.

“Ah Sir, I just got a report in from the Foreign Office” It was Brigadier Graves from the Intelligence Department. “I think you should review it immediately sir”

“OK Graves, will do. Send it up at once.”

A short while later there was a knock at his door. Simnett shouted for the messenger to enter and he opened the large, Oak doors and handed the Admiral a large elastic band bound report. It was entitled Intelligence Report on the Automagfreek Situation. Simnett sighed, the nation of Automagfreek was up to it’s old tricks again. He opened the report and perused the contents.

It read:

It is believed that on 22nd of August the Excessively Armed Empire of Automagfreek initialised a massive build up of military forces, satellite photographs have been taken of the area and are attached for clarity in appendix I. It is believed by our nation’s Military Intelligence Service that such a build up can only mean preparation for war. Our regional neighbours, Sarzonia, whilst remaining diplomatically tight-lipped about the situation have clearly embarked upon some sort of military endeavour with a large portion of her fleet breaking off usual patrols and heading towards Automagfreek territory. Whilst this may only be a training exercise or some other such occasion it is believed (with at least 94% confidence) that such a move can only be made in response to some sort of threat or other announcement by Automagfreek. It is also believed that Praetonia is involved in this affair as well.

In response to this situation we advise that the military is placed on high alert and is ready to respond to the situation as it develops and to support our Sarzonian friends. The exact deployments have been left to you to decide.

END OF REPORT

Admiral Simnett considered the situation for a short time before springing into action. He handed the report back to the attache who had brought it and told him to make sure that the King saw it and to inform him that he was working on a strategy.

He picked up the phone and rang Admiral of the Fleet Charles Anson, who was out on Naval manoeuvres somewhere in international waters.

“Anson, this is Simnett. We have a situation on our hands. Automagfreek has moved against Praetonia and Sarzonia and it is my intention to support our Sarzonian friends in this campaign. I want you to mobilize the First and Second fleets immediately and take them along with your flagship, HMS Revenant, to just outside the new Freekian waters. Do not attack as yet but keep me informed as the situation develops.”

“Yes, Sir!” came the reply

“Oh, and make sure your somewhere near the Sarzonian fleets, we can’t come to much harm then eh?”

“Yes, Sir” Anson replied as he hung up the phone.

Simnett then sent similar messages to the Air and Army Chiefs and began drafting legislation to mobilize the Territorial Army and the local militias so that the army could be free to operate internationally.

Finally he gave orders that the Third (Home Service) Fleet, fourth (Reserve) Fleet and teh Ninth (Littoral) Fleet were to return to home waters and defend Lesser Ribena, whilst he sent messages to detachments of the Fourth and Fifth (Submarine) Fleets to support the taskforce deployment. Elements of the Seventh (Support) and Eighth (Logistics) fleets were to act in support of the taskforce abroad and ferry supplies to them under escort from the Home Service Fleet.

“At last” The Admiral thought “We’ll see how good our military finally is”

Since the first fleet deployment much had changed, the Automagfreek and Praetonian fleets had departed the area, firing at each other as they went. No damage had been caused to Lesser Ribenan vessels as they were just on observation duty and we're keeping well out of the way of the other, larger, fleets.

Admiral of the Fleet Clive Anson was standing on his bridge looking at the smoke in the distance when an Ensign from the radio room presented him with a sheet of paper.

"This is straight from the Admiralty offices, sir" The Ensign remarked shortly before presenting a pristine salute.

The Admiral returned the salute and dismissed the Ensign. He began to read the sheet of orders. It seemed that since leaving docks Lesser Ribena had officially become more involved with the war. Just one hour previously his nation declared a state of war with Kjata Major. The Admiral had barely heard of the place but the Admiralty had sent co-ordinates where his 3 fleets (2 surface, 1 submarine) were to meet up with supply and vessels as well as hundreds of troop transports and steam towards Kjata Major territory.

Almost before he had finished Anson was barking out orders to his flag staff on the bridge.

"Divert the 2nd fleet to the rendezvous point to escort these supply vessels, and take the 1st fleet on a direct course to Kjata Major! Half of the subs are to go with each fleet."

"Yes Sir!" came the swift reply

Anson turned to Lieutenant Keyes who occupied the fleet radio communicators position. "Order the fleet to spread out, I want the AA and ASW frigates ready to take on any enemy threats, we don't know what Kjata Major's capable of yet. Oh and tell the subs to use their SONAR to screen us incase they have underwater capability."

Only the 1st and 2nd fleets are headed your way along with the 5th submarine fleet.

Army strength is much weaker with only 1,000,000 combat personnel, as well as around 2,000,000 Reservists, 2,000,000 Territorial Army members and 6,000,000 militia. Vehicle provision is a little better as all vehicles come from my own storefront, The Royal Armaments Company (which is nationalised).

The reserves etc. will not be called in unless things get really dire as it would cause panic back at home.

EDIT: BTW all ships and naval aircraft come from Sarzonia's storefronts: Avalon Aerospace and the Portland Ironworks

OOC: Only 3388 ships, and the entirity of the third and fourth fleets are usually mothballed in ports and are not actually active many of them being old designs anyway. They will take months to bring out of mothball and are not likely to become involved in this conflict. A lot of the other vessels are transport or supply ships which are relatively small and require less support.

Only 1110 of the ships are active warships.

Sorry I should have made that clear in the earlier post.

Yeah, but still, 1000 ships are a lot for a nation of your size, you a bit over half my population and have less then 1/3 of my military budget, but what ever, I'm about to double my fleet strength(at the expense of the army).

General Minerva watched the satellite pictures.

"Ribena is fast, and powerful. My only chance is to strike with the Storm."

General Minerva called for Riki, her aide.

"Yes, General Minerva" he stated as he enterred her office.

The General pointed to the screen, it was clear she was troubled by the ships.

Riki exclaimed, "Such a deployment! How can you stop them?"

General Minerva and sighed and flipped the screen off. A tear went down her face, instantly her aide knew what she would say."They are too much, we can't stop them. We're too young and too small...."

Riki sighed, "Yes....Raijin...I understand."

The communication between the two was almost legendary, they were in tune with each other's thoughts and feelings. Riki and Minerva grew up together in the labs, as a result they were dependant on each other for success.

"General Minerva, I understand completely, when they enter the 400 mile barrier we'll strike."

Time was not on their side, the troops would have to be called quickly to stop this threat soon.

Admiral Anson led the 1st fleet into Kjata Major territory, his flagship HMS Revenant at the helm. Many called him old fashioned, slow, unreactive and even doddering but Anson liked to think of himself as exact and liked to see to every detail, though this often slowed down his decision making, the only times his decisions were quick was when they had already been made for him. He was the last of the "old guard" that had supported the return of the King after he was deposed in a rebellion. Indeed that was how he had been promoted so high anyway, he had little combat experience and his fleet was untried in war. His old fashioned values meant that he liked to rely on his guns and aircraft more than his missiles or other counter measures that seemed so new and confused him.

In that spirit he doddered on into the 400 mile limit without even a thought to missile strikes, submarines or other counter attacks. He was too busy ensuring that his flagship was at the fore of the fleet in the position of honour, just where he should be!

OOC: I hope i'm getting across that this guy is totally green in war and takes no countermeasures or anything (This is the first war that this nation has fought and they are unprepared for it)

OOC: If General Minerva should fail you'll be up against the cruelest leader in Kjata Major. General Murasame. Minerva is all about technology, accuracy and power. Lightning fast response.

IC:Just as ordered when the ships enterred the range, 600 F/A-22 took off from the air bases across Kjata Major within 10 minutes. They grouped over the towers of Filo and headed at Mach 2 into the battle zone in the Sea of Japan.

Each was equipped with 2 AGM-84 Harpoons and four AIM-54 Phoenix Missiles.

The plan was to split into squadrons of 10 and take out the Flagship and then troop transports in a nearly suicidal run over the enemy without warning at max speed.

"Sir, the radar suggests that we have massed groups of enemy aircraft headed our way at high speeds." Stated a naval Lieutenant.

"You're sure that they're enemy?" Anson replied

"Yes, sir. They're now only 300 miles away. Might I suggest that we initiate SAM defences and launch the fighters?"

"hmm..."

"Sir? The fighters and SAMs?, they're getting closer!"

"OK, do whatever you think is right."

The Lieutenant ran off to give the orders and the fighters were hurridly scrambled and SAMs readied for action. However it was too late, only around a half of the fleet's 700 aircraft were in the air in time and only two thirds of those were fighters. Many were still taxiing on the decks of the carriers or still in the holds or being fuelled and armed in the workshops. The SAMs were mostly operational but many were still being loaded wheen the enemy became visible on the horizon.

OOC:

Yeah sure, all are from the Sarzonia storefronts:

Yellow Jacket mini-SAM
Function: portable surface to air missile launcher
Dimensions: length: 1.4 meters;
weight: 30 pounds;
diameter; 19 cm;
Speed: supersonic in flight
Range: 0.9 to 5.5 km; Ceiling: 9,500 feet.
Sensors: Passive infrared sensors

Hornet short-medium range SAM
Function: Surface to air missile launcher.
Length: 4.6 m;
Weight: 110 pounds;
Diameter: 580 mm
Speed: Mach 6.4
Range: 15 to 125 km
Ceiling: 11,500 feet.
Sensors: Passive infrared sensors; Active laser radar system.

Most of the following are broard approximations for class:
Flagship has: 16 hornets ~50 yellow jackets
battleships have around 20 hornets ~50 yellow jackets
cruisers have around 6 hornets and 10 yellow jackets
carriers have around 4 hornets and 8 yellow jackets
destroyers have 2-6 hornets and 4-10 yellow jackets
frigates have 2-6 hornets and 2-8 yellow jackets

also most classes have actual AA guns as well, this will be detailed at the below link. All numbers are approximately doubled if the vessel is of an AA (anti-aircraft) type.

Exact figures can be found here: Portland Ironworks (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=404832)

Naval airforce for the 1st fleet consists of approximately:
24 Scorpion Helicopters (on HMS Revenant)
60 Vultures Strike Aircraft(on Swiftsure carriers)
40 Albatross combat fighter (on Swiftsure carriers)
50 Condor VTOL fighters (on Nantichoke carriers)
50 Leapfrog VSTOL fighters (on Nantichoke carriers)
460 Assorted Aircraft (1/4 Vulture, 1/2 Albatross, 1/4 Scorpion) on various small carriers and battleships/dreadnoughts.

"HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!" yelled a pilot through the radio.

"IT'S FUCKING HUGE!" yelled another

"Holy CRAP! That must be a Super Dreadnaught!"

Minerva scrambled to the radio and asked them, "You're sure? Is it really a Super Dreadnaught?"

"Yes, General Minerva! We can't take it out if we tried, we're going to need to use THE bomb."
---------

The planes got real low. They were only 300-400 feet above the water, gunning it at mach 2. They sped into the line of ships. The carriers were the first target.

6 Saugerties-class fleet carriers - 8 missiles at each, very low to the waterline. (Total of 48 missiles from 24 aircraft)
2 Nantichoke Aircraft Carrier - 16 missiles at each, low with three aimed at the bridge. (Total of 32 missiles from 16 aircraft)
2 Forrest-class fleet carriers - 16 missiles at each, low with three aimed at the bridge. (Total of 32 missiles from 16 aircraft)
1 McVie-class light carrier - 30 missiles at it. 5 at the bridge, rest at the sides. 15 aircraft used to attack.
5 Swiftsure-class carriers - 10 missiles at each. (50 missiles total from 25 aircraft.

-- 96 aircraft used on carrier strike.

1 Vigilant-class Trimaran command battleship (HMS Revenant)
100 missiles launched from 50 aircraft. (10 to bridge, 20 to guns, 70 to sides)

1 Freedom Class Pocket Super Dreadnaught (HMS Victorious)
100 missiles launched from 50 aircraft. (30 targetting propellers, 50 to bridge and midsection, 30 to guns. )

4 aircraft turned around and fled.

The enemy bombers were in visual range now and all hands in the fleet were at battlestations. Klaxons were sounding and men were hurridly running through their battle drills.

On the Flagship Admiral Anson was staring at the attack through the window, it was the first time he had ever seen combat and he was terrified. His crew on the bridge were effectively in command on the fleet now, no longer notifying him of any orders.

Commander Davies grabbed the nearest intercom unit and called down to the gunners on deck. "Ready the automatic anti-missile guns, and standby to fire all SAM defences."

Meanwhile the AA guns were beginning to fire on the incoming aircraft and managed to score a few hits. The SAMs were readied for when the enemy got really close and the first Hornets were fired off at 50km, the rockets screeching out of their launchers towards the incoming aircraft. At this range it was not clear what effect the missiles had but there were still enemy targets reading on the RADAR. Whilst the hornets reloaded the yellow jackets were readied to fire when the enemy were within 5km.

The fighters that were already in the air began to track and target the enemy aircraft and dogfights erupted all over the sky with planes blossoming smoke and exploding everywhere and showering down on the fleet below.

The automatically tracking machine guns and missiles readied themselves in a last ditch attempt to take down the mass of incoming missiles. Each gun selected a different target and fired incessently at it. They had little chance of destroying much but with this many missiles screaming towards them they could hardly miss.

Within seconds missiles began to hit the decks and hulls of the fleet ships, scoring many direct hits. The first vessel hit was HMS Drake, the McVie class carrier, with many missiles impacting low on it's hull and it's triple hull being punctured in at least 12 places, 3 missiles survived to hit the bridge and totally destroyed most of the superstructure. The devestation was immense, most of the command staff already dead and flaming debris flying all over the deck. teh fuel lines were out fuelling up aircraft who were just readying to fly out into the mahem above. A large piece of superstructure landed on one of these and soon the whole deck was awash with flames. Much of the firefighting equipment was out of service due to the power failing with the waterline hits. The Drake was soon little more than a floating hulk, the 1st lieutenant took command from the secondary bridge and called for an abandonment of the ship to save his men's lives.

The scene was echoed throughout the fleet with some carriers in a similar situation to the Drake whilst others escaped with only superficial damage. On the Flagship, HMS Revenent, almost 75 missiles survived to thunder into the ship. Again well placed missiles struck the waterline but this time many were beaten by the 1600mm triple hull and only a few waterproof compartments had to be sealed. Some of the gun turrets took direct hits and C turret (762mm) had to be closed down due to a ammunition feed failure, glancing hits struck many of the smaller ETC turrets and a few were damaged enough to be shut down. Again it was the bridge where the most damage occured, the entire roof of the bridge folded in under 8 almost simultaneous missile strikes and almost the whole command staff was wiped out in one fell swoop. The secondary bridge, deep within the hull, went into action immediately and Captain Clarke took over command of the ship. He ordered all wreckage to be cleared and as many guns as possible to be returned to action, at the same time he sent a message to Admiral Hewitt to give him command of the fleet.

Hewitt quickly took control of the situation and decided to bring into the fray all of his vessels, the specialist AA destroyers were ordered to take down as many aircraft as possible and the carriers were instructed to clear their decks ready to launch more fighters and to receive damaged aircraft. He transferred to one of the Independence class super dreadnoughts as his own vessel had suffered propellor and waterline damage from some of the missile strikes.

The aircraft already in the air were ordered to take down as many of the enemy as possible before returning to any carrier still useable to rearm and refuel before taking off again. The majority of the corvettes were ordered to attempt to get near enough to the McVie carrier and try to put out the fire on it's deck, whilst her crew were ordered back on board.

When the time was right and the enemy were clsoe enough almost 1500 of the yellow jacket SAM missiles hit the air at the same time from all ships of the fleet in a deadly barrage designed to knock out as many approaching aircraft as possible in revenge for the damage done to the fleet. Meanwihiel teh Hornets and the AA guns kept up their fire on the enemy and most of the crews attempted damage limitation or firefighting.

------------------------------------------------

Damage incurred:

6 Saugerties-class fleet carriers (minor damage to all hulls and decks, 4 still mostly able to launch and receive aircraft, 1 with propellor damage and flaming deck, 1 with damaged hull and superstructure collapsed)
2 Nantichoke Aircraft Carrier (both minor damage to deck, able to recieve and launch aircraft, fairly major hull damage to both with many of the watertight comaprtments already closed)
2 Forrest-class fleet carriers (1 with a small deck fire, unable to launch or recieve any aircraft until put out)
1 McVie-class light carrier (burning hulk, unable to launch or recieve any aircraft, waterline puncture, likely to sink soon)
5 Swiftsure-class carriers (all have fairly major hull damage and crews are attempting to bring flooding under control with pumps and watertight compartments, 3 able to still function as carriers)
1 Vigilant-class Trimaran command battleship (Superstructure has heavy damage, bridge destroyed, Admiral killed, minor hull damage, still functioning as a gun platform)
1 Freedom Class Pocket Super Dreadnaught (minor hull and deck damage with some small hull breaches, crew attempting flood control, major propellor damage and no response from some engines.)

"Direct hit pffppshhh" one radio fell silent. Many of the F/A-22 planes having been flying so low to the water were in the path of missiles and during pulling up started to crash into each other and some suicidally targetted the bridges on the ships, the large amount of fuel and missiles making them more dangerous then the missiles they previously fired.

Modern-day kamikaze planes when hit. They wer being beaten by sheer numbers.

140 of the planes would crash into the water, ships or other airplanes during the fast pass over the fleet.

The one's that past over the fleet quickly turned around and made a large circle, to avoid any extra fire and return to base.
--------------

"General Minerva, the reports confirm a SD-class ship." said Kiki.

"We just lost 1/8th of our fighter planes, F/A-22. If this keeps up we'll be sending MiGs-15 in."

General Minerva sighed, it was the first time the mighty F/A-22's had actually gone up against a TRUE force. Previously the F/A-22s were invincible ghosts of the sky, but an enemy with a better detection system cuts that edge down to nearly nothing.

She raised her sword and yelled, "Launch the bombers, fly high and give them hell! Let's see how the enemy likes raining MOABs! YF-23's guard them. Send all 100 of our YF-23's to protect the bombers!"

---------

Modified 20 C-130's took off carrying one MOAB each. They were joined by the YF-23's. The plan was to sink the ships or create a massive hole in them.

Several of the damaged fighter aircraft crashed into the hulls of the fleet, causing damage to some 12 battleships, 19 cruisers and more than 30 of the destroyers. This damage was light compared to what the fleet had previously suffered though. Several of the carriers were still smouldering and the McVie class was all but sunk, Admiral Hewitt had her remaining crew switch to support the crew on the other carriers.

The Freedom Class Dreadnought was still suffering from propulsion difficulties and Hewitt was still giving orders from his Independence class backup ship. As the enemy aircraft turned for home Hewitt ordered a cease fire and dispatched medical and supply vessels to re-equip and to help the wounded. The aircraft were ordered back to any carrier still functioning and work began on clearing wreckage and fixing leaks.

Aircraft were rearmed and readied on decks for quick takeoff. The fleet was reorganised with carriers, damaged vessels and supply vessels in the centre and acorden of cruisers and battleships around them and a further cordon of AA frigates and destroyers around them. Subs were assigned to patrol routes around the edge of the fleet.

The fleet moved a few miles from it's previous position towards Kjata Major territory to clear itself of the wreckage and burning oil left in the sea behind them. The propulsionless Freedom class was pulled there by some of the cruisers whilst the engineers worked on fixing her.

All was going well until Hewitt got the report:

"Sir, we're detecting a small unit of aircraft very high up!"

"Damn bombers! Scramble all fighters, and prepare for incoming!"

"General Minerva we will arrive at the target minutes." said 'Blue Dragon'

"Roger that Blue Dragon, release on the ships previously targeted. TAKE THEM OUT"

The YF-23's flew slow, but with the C-130's carrying the MOAB's they hopefulyl would not be spotted as they got closer. Armed with the same weapons as the F/A-22's they would be ready to fight hard and fast in the air then drop the 2 anti-ship missiles down on any surviving targets.

With a little more warning this time and under a competent Admiral the air defences were better prepared, though many of the ships were still fighting against flooding and fires from earlier damage. The remaining SAMs and AA guns began firing as the bombers dived in to attack.

OOC: The bombers don't dive to attack....they are heavy, slow moving cargo planes with a massive bomb.

IC: The planes dropped the bombs one by one. One to each aircraft carrier, one to the flag ship and three to the already damaged immoblie SD.

The C-130's were being shot up by the anti-air fire and soon after dropping five fell towards the fleet below. The previously hidden YF-23's flew through and turned around, ready for a rear attack on the ships.

OOC: sorry, ignore that, oh and you'll probably get some pretty clear runs for your bombers as my fighters will take time to climb to that height.

IC: The bombs began slowly falling towards the ships below, there was nothing anyone could do but hope that the bombs missed as there was no way of stopping them now.

The first bomb impacted on the keel of the Flagship, it's explosion wracking the air and sending shockwaves over the entire ship. When the smoke cleared it was obvious that some fairly serious damage had been done, the whole of the front portion of the deck was torn up by the explosion and there was now a hole which reached down to the 7th deck below. Whilst not a critical or threatening hit, the holw served as a demonstration of the power of the mighty bombs.

Soon the rest of the bombs began impacting on the other ships, some missed but those that hit tore up large parts of the deck particularly on the aircraft carriers. Now there were another 3 carriers out of commission simply due to massive holes in the deck plates. The damage was worst on the immobile SD, the bomb hit dead on the superstructure and blasted away much of teh upper works, the main weather deck was gone as well as the now empty primary bridge, the debris rained down on those below and small fires began to break out from electrical cables and the crew began to fight them once again.

Meanwhile, HMS Drake had listed to one side and slowly sunk beneath the sea. Damage and fires had also overcome 6 of the destroyers earlier struck by stray missiles and wreckage from planes and they were also abandoned to the sea.

"Mission complete, the SD is nearly out of comission." radioed Blue Dragon back to General Minerva.

"Good. Now about the carriers, are they out also?" she responded quickly.

"Hard to tell, so much fire and damage done, a few missed. The smaller the carrier the harder to hit."

"They won't want to come any closer, all air defenses will be ready, we need a change of tactics."

"Roger that General Minerva, readying sneak attack. Time to take out those weak little ships from behind."

------------

The C-130's and the YF-23's split up. The C-130's headed straight forward to do a large long circle back. The injured C-130's would return first. The YF-23's would provide cover for the C-130's with a swift and dangerous attack on the small ships of the 1st fleet.

OOC: managed to get back on for a short time.

IC:

The Freedom SD remained mostly battleworthy, with just it's upperworks damaged, it's propulsion was severely limited but engineers had managed to get two of it's nuclear engines back online and one propellor shaft was functioning. The upperworks were a mess with the bridge and weatherdeck destroyed and the deck strewn with debris. However the secondary bridge was functioing as usual and most of the guns remained in commission.

The fleet returned to standard formation, small ships on the outside and large in the middle for maximum AA capabilities. The subs which surrounded the fleet now surfaced to allow all possible SAMs to target aircraft. Frigates and destroyers reloaded furiously and Fighters began to fill theair once more. Fires onboard all vessels had now been nrought under control and the majority of carriers now had their decks clear for takeoff and landing. Those with shell holes in decks assigned crew members to hurridly weld large patches of thick steel over them to bring them back to readyness. All eyes were on the sky and Radar screens to see where the next attack would occur.

With a lull in the fighting the first small boats and helicoptors began to pick up survivors knocked overboard into the sea and return them to a vessel. Morale was generally good and the fleet began to slowly push it's way closer to Kjata Major territory moving at the speed of the damaged SD (around 6 knots).

The YF-23's decided to pick an easy target and targeted the Ossipee-class special operations boats and fired 2 missiles at each from behind. The Special Ops boats were taking some heavy casualties from the attacks, but they were not important in the scale of things. At the moment they were empty of all but a skeleton crew and would only be needed to ferry marines ashore and on missions when the invasion began.

Admiral Hewitt concentrated on finishing the hurried repairs to the carriers and trying to get as many planes servicable as possible. As soon as a sizeable force of fighters was rearmed and ready they were ordered to take to the skies again and see of some of the attackers who strayed too close but were under orders not to get drawn into any sort of massed dogfight. Whilst this was going on the fleet was steadily steaming towards the Kjata coastline and the linkup with the Second Fleet and the reinforcements that would be gained there. In fact it was not long before they would be able to recieve extra fighter aircraft from the Second Fleet to aid the overstretched fighters of the First.

what mattered most now was to get to the coast, and attempt to gain some sort of an air superiority on a local scale to safeguard any amphibious landings.

A lone B-2 bomber loaded its impressive bomb that would deliver a powerful EMP blast within a massive radius of ten miles. This mission would be a lone strike. Even if the enemy destroys the plane the bomb will still knock out their ships.

OOC: You never posted losses for your ships I attacked (small weak ones to), yet you are never willing to take a loss. In reality your ships are GONE, no ship in the world can stand a MOAB and still be working in the condition you stated. Your carriers should be blown to shit and then some. Towers gone, unable to retrieve or launch aircraft from the big gaping hole that will go all the way deep inside the ship and in most cases cause the ammo and fuel to explode and sink it.

EMP hardened is crap, a lie! Its never been tested right or working, the best is the F. Box type, and that's for cars and airplanes which don't have electrical systems on the outside and are protected with non-electrical conducting parts. Your ships aren't like this, your internal systems like medical and special rooms yes, but Radar and the bridge scream FRIED. Along with all your weapons systems. Whatever is hardwired to the outside and not grounded should be dead from the EMP.

OOC Righto then, thanks.

I guess the following casualties will have been incurred:

Flagship: MOAB destroys much of the above deck superstructure, including comms towers and non-combat bridge as well as damaging some of the turrets and destroyng others. Any crew on deck are eviscerated. The ship already being in a critical state it slows down as many of the crew are shocked by the bombs' impact and reduce efficiency. Pumping operations on water leaking in through hull damage may be affected by reduced crew.

SD: Much the same effects as on the flagship, superstructure heavily damaged, some turrets knocked out, crew killed and wounded etc. Again crew efficiency will be affected due to casualties and shock and efficiency reduced.

Carriers: Superstructure mostly gone, planes on deck destroyed ground crew and naval crew on deck killed with extremely reduced efficiency in aircraft refueling and rearming etc. Deck damage incurred causes many carriers to shut down operations toland and take off aircraft. Many lifts from aircraft holds blocked by wreckage causing few more aircraft to be brought from storeage. On the more heavily damaged carriers extra damage and any holing caused to hull will slowly cause them to sink. I figure the following will sink:

1 Saugerties-class fleet carrier
1 Nantichoke Aircraft Carrier
2 Swiftsure-class carriers

Any crew evacuated are taken to supplement other remaining carriers and the flagship and SD.

Special Ops boats: Major damage caused to these light vessels, figure around 40 sunk and 40 heavily damaged with reduced mobility and crews with the remaining 20 suffering from lighter damage. Crews transferred where possible to supplement other ships.

Other vessels caught by stray missiles/crashing aircraft etc:
5 Shield Bearer-class missile cruisers
2 Praeton-class heavy missile cruisers
8 Johnston-class AA destroyers
9 Evermore-class destroyers
13 Wixted-class frigates
6 McDonough-class ASW frigates
4 Hastings-class strike frigates
11 Seminole-class corvettes

All varyingly damaged, mostly lighter damage with maybe a few turrets knocked out or superstructure damaged etc. These ships weren't targetted directly but may have been struck by accident or as targets of opportunity.

Hope thats better, a few carriers have sunk and damage incurred onto various other ships, however a MOAB is mostly an explosive device and few ships are likely to be sunk by it. It has a greater effect on carriers whereby the decks have been wrecked and strewn with debris causing planes to divert to other less damaged carriers or ditch in the sea and await rescue etc.

Let me know if this damage is OK for you or if you think that it should be even higher or is too much.

OOC: Ya that's good. Your better ships surely won't sink, but a horrible blow has been done. I'd say the aircraft carriers won't sink entirely, maybe one or two will flood, split and slowly sink. The final blow will be the EMP blast which will render your non farasday box protected components useless....I.E. Anti-air, radar and general exposed external systems like guns and missile batteries.

IC:

The remains of the fleet halted whilst the commanders took stock of the situation and attempted to rescue men who were blown overboard. The vessels with waterline damage brought all of their flooding pumps online and closed watertight doors to minimise flooding. On the command ships emergency radio masts are set up to counteract damage done to exposed comms units by the MOABs. The crew on the carriers were running around hurriedly trying to clear wreckage from the runway to allow aircraft to land.

On the Superdreadnought Admiral Hewitt surveyed what was left of his fleet. "Damn these aircraft" he though "Give me a good old fashioned naval battle any day". His larger ships were in ruins above decks and the seas around them were covered in burning oil, wreckage, the hulls of capsized vessle and bodies. He was sure that hundreds if not thousands of Lesser Ribenans were already dead from this action and many more would die before the day was done. He reconciled himself that his country was fighting for the cause of freedom and democracy and had only gone to war to support their allies. Still, Hewtitt had never liked war.

Admiral Hewitt rattled off orders to be relayed to his ships:

"All non critically damaged vessels are to continue towards Kjata Major, transfer the crews from the ships in danger of sinking to supplement other crews"

"Inform the Carrier captains that they are to do their utmost to clear their decks for aircraft to operate from, and tell them to requisition non-essential crew members from the smaller vessels to expedient the job"

"Ready all possible air defences that still function and get as many planes into the air as possible, they aren't finished with us yet!"

Meanwhile the 2nd fleet maintained it's course towards the Kjata Major homeland.

A small group of submarines, of russian make slipped into the waters and began approaching the front of the fleet. Fifteen Severodvinsk class submarines, all of Kjata Major's submarines. They were fully loaded with torpedos and were going to the sea. Their presense can easily be detected. So the remnants of the Bora-class attack vessels would provide cover.

The speedy Boras sped out one by one from the naval yards, the naval yards could easily be discovered, the camoflagued caves which houses the boats was known and any aircraft could target and destroy these 'natural' naval yards.

"Sir we've got multiple contacts on SONAR!" exclaimed a Naval Commander.
"Do we know what they are Jenkins?" asked Admiral Hewitt
"Not yet sir, but they're probably subs, though many could be surface vessels, it's hard to tell at this range."
"Righto, inform the second fleet that the enemy has subs. Ready all our depth charges and torpedo tubes, put our own subs out on the outskirts of the fleet and put all ships on full alert. Oh and Jenkins"
"yes Sir?"
"Keep an eye on that SONAR monitor will you"
"Yes, Sir!"

One half of the 5th Submarine fleet moved to new positions securing the outskirts of the fleet. They shut down all non-essential systems and waited in near silence for the approach of the enemy. The subs proceeded 200 km off the shore and stopped dead in the water.

"Subs in position, waiting on orders" said the Admiral.

"Prepare to launch" ordered General Minerva.

The subs began to slowly rise up from the depth, they were surfacing. This unorthodox way of surfacing appears like poor tactics or the work of some suicidal attacks. They would be exposed for a short time, but the ships should be still practically over the horizon.

"All hands on deck! Prepare to launch the baubles!" sounded the alarm.

Men scurried up and down the decks on the submarine, loading weapons into the vertical launch missile tubes. These weren't ICBMs though, they were much smaller.

"Fire one! Fire two! Fire three!" yelled the captains on the ships and in unison the ships fired, but no great burst happened. A rush of water filled the tubes and a collection of balls floated on the water. Each a black dome that floated around.

Just as they has launched the submarines began to dive under the surface, leaving 450 small circular objects in the water....which were dispersing as if they had small propellers to guide them to targets.

"We're reporting aircraft in the area!" called an officer to the Admiral.

The Admiral laughed and took a step forward, raising his fist.

"They have no idea what is coming! They'll be shot out of the sky instantly by our Metal Storm baubles!"

"Sir....won't that damage our ability to fight as we cannot reload them?"

The Admiral laughed and nodded, "Ah...but you forget how easy it is to down a plane accurately when the difference between a stream of rounds is less then a meter! If they fly low enough they'll be destroyed."

5 sleek Airscout Marine Reconnaissance Aircraft swooped through the air above the subs. They were moving at just over mach 1 and circled in the air above at 45000 feet. The lead aircraft pilot switched on his radio and opened a link to the flagship.

"This is Fox 7, I have a visual on the enemy. They appeared to have been about half a dozen large subs in the area. They have just dived and are no longer surfaced"

"Damn" The Admiral cursed, "We just missed them"

"There is one thing though, sir. Just before they dived we got a reading of almost 500 small objects being dispensed into the sea."

"Were they mines?"

"I don't know sir, I'll drop down and take a look."

"Right, but be careful and leave the rest of the flight in position"

The Airscout dived sharply down to 100ft above the surface and levelled off to take a look at the unidentified objects. Meanwhile the fleet continued heading towards the last known location of the enemy, a screen of subs and destroyers surrounding the larger vessels.

As the plane dropped down, a barrage of anti-air gunfire opened up. Five of the pods launched a barrage of gunfire, each at a rate of 1 million rounds per minute at the aircraft. The distance between each round was a mere 1 meter in flight. A small circle formed of the anti-air fire to overlap and destroy the plane.

Just as the first set opened fire, the others were preparing to target the plane (currently predicting trajectory and survivabilty of the aircraft under this attack) to open up if need be and use more ammo to ensure a kill.

OOC: My Metal Storm guns are VERY dangerous, but these have one major weakness. They cannot be reloaded and after exhausting ammo become moving mines that can drift or drive themselves into naval vessels. Mobility is very limited on these and they don't have large amounts of fuel to function as real vessels.

Metal Storm technology protects all of the wide open land areas....sometimes the cities like Filo, Tokyo and Negoshima. These guns of Minerva are essentially to pick off ships that drift into the immediate area or any plane. Since you are heading to the beach you either need to kill these tiny (1 meter wide orbs) objects or come up with a way to get around them. They are 200 miles off shore with an attack range of around 5-10 miles. Though they are dispersing so they can overlap and protect more water better. Essentially this is too ward off your immediate attack for more aerial harassment and prepare the military with several weeks or so of preperations to be that much BETTER for the invasion.

I wouldn't take the guns as a real threat, cause they carry heavy rounds, but it is very limited in that aspect also. They can pester the larger ships and pose a decent risk, but unless they speed into the ship and ignite the bomb your heavy ships should have nothing to fear on a large scale. Hit one of these and it makes the Koel* explosion seem small.

The pilot didn't know what hit him. Millions of small projectiles tore into his plane and shredded it to pieces. The majority of the fusilage smashed into the sea and erupted into flames whislt the rest of the burning debris was scattered across the area.

"Fox 7 we have lost radio contact, please respond" Came an urgent call from the flagship

"I repeat, respond Fox 7!"

"No reply sir" The aide reported to the Admiral

"Damn it, get the rest of the flight on the radio"

"Yes Sir" He replied and scurried off towards the communications console on the bridge. "I'm patching you through now sir"

"Fox 3 do you recieve me?" Hewitt enquired

"Loud and clear sir" came the reply

"Can you see what happened to Fox 7?"

"I don't know exactly sir but it seems that he just disintegrated, some sort of a minefield in the sea shot him down"

"Hmm a minefield you say, well maintain your height and we'll work on a plan to get rid of this threat."

--------------------------------------------------

OOC: How vulnerable are these things to attacks, for example would fire cause any damage to them or maybe an EMP blast. How about shells fired from the ships or torpedoes. Can your mines move underwater to attack subs?

22-09-2005, 20:42
OOC: Umm they FIRE at 1 million or more rounds per minute, doesn't mean they carry it. The thing is though that these little things are practically immune to all missiles and bombs as they can put up a steel wall and destroy them before they can be destroyed. My land versions are much smaller and have around 1800 rounds, depending on type. The sea version carries 10,000 bullets (anti-air, missile and bomb, anti-ship also) and a collection of high explosive rounds for bombing ships. These scaled up orbs are much larger and can move SLOWLY, they pose little threat to people in the open water, but do to the shore having a clear beach landing these things can spread out to cover the whole area.

Fire causes no real damage to it, the outside is made of titanium and has an array of explosives underneath the protective shell to function as a mine, if you pierce it and the thing is activated to blow up on contact or proximity it will be destroyed instantly. Fire on the gun turrent is nearly impossible as it can hide within and seal itself up to prevent sinking. Highly compressed gas is the source of its explosive mine and also its floatation.

The mines are 1 meter wide ORBS, they are spheres and torpedos will pass right under them unless skimming and then the sphere shape will cause the orb to ricochet off the torpedo unless it explodes and punctures the outer wall. Shelling is also hard because they bob in the water and are so small, even a direct hit sometimes won't cause destruction, but shelling damages internal functions and can render it into auto-self-destruct.

EMP is pretty good if you can get them up when they go to fire. Naturally the missiles will be targeted and shot at quickly, the ones that fire can for 2.5 seconds be vulnerable to direct EMP damage. A Farsaday Box protects the orb completely on the outside, the sphere is enclosed with gas and a non-conducting cage. (This prevents it from spinning or losing balance while in the sea also). Any one that gets exposed will take minimal damage and by its nature explode to prevent capture or deconstruction.

If you want to draw what its like here's a simple description.

The outside is a black titanium sphere with a non conductive cage seperating a collection of high explosive rounds just under the titanium sphere's cage.

The sphere is surrounded by a later of compressed hydrogen gas, a large non conductive cage seperates the gas from the internal system.

A gel battery is at the bottom half of the internal sphere, allowing balance and power usage. Above this is a hexagonal honey combed shaped loading system with a square firing pod attached on powerful levers. This system allows reloading and ammo-changes by switching packs. All the rounds are stored and are ready for use.

The orbs electronic systems are very intelligent and use a diamond processor to make advanced calaculations and target and interpret enemy data by object type, speed, mass and radar signature, infrared signature and visual data. They can relay data of targets to each other and they have a system to target effectively automatically to not 'overkill' any target.

If you drop a rubber duck into the water, the orbs won't see it as a threat and wouldn't bother firing. If a human controlled it, chances are they'd fire a bullet right through its head and take a picture as an advertising or funny joke. The orbs can function without human contact and WILL fire even on their own ships if they attack the orbs or fail to identify/be identified by them.

A very advanced mine, with intelligent systems, but still avoidable in large areas. They can be collected or destroyed after a mission, so no death or injury will result after a war or battle.

That's basically the mine.....I have no action at this time to take.....I need time to gather troops and I cannot do it so fast, it'd be godmodding to do so. Your turn to either destroy them (try ahhahaha) or wait off the shore and plan attacks. Well...that's what options I see. XD

Admiral Hewitt decided taht the best way to deal with this threat was to throw a heck of a lot of firepower at it before running away and doing the same. Chances are it would take a while but he was unprepared to chance running a gauntlet of advanced mines.

To that end the cruisers, frigates and destroyers in the force sped to within gun, missile and torpedo range if the mines before unleasing everything they had at them. Anti-Ship missiles soared into the air alongside high calibre shells and railgun rails. Guided torpedoes sliced the water beneath the mines every captain trying to damage as many mines as possible. Soon all hell was let loose with ordinance exploding left, right and centre. The captains on board the missile carrying vessels fired a few missiles targeted to fly over the mines to see if they could entice them to open fire.

Whilst this was going on the carriers manouvered into range and let off as many aircraft as possible, all were instructed to maintain high altitude and only to try to destroy the mines from this height. Soon more explosives were thudding into the sea with the thuds of explosions reverberating around the fleet.

It was unclear what damage was caused as of yet but it was hoped that at least some mines would be destroyed. After 15 minutes of intense bombardment the ships were instructed to cease fire and move back out of range but to maintain observation on the mines to try to assess any damage.

OOC: Friendly reminder....Your targeting a spread out mass of something that is only 1 meter wide and adrift in the sea, has no real sonar detection or anything. Your essentially shooting at a dead fish you THINK you saw 200 miles away with and advanced missile that won't be able to lock on do to its small size and shape. I still don't know how your ships that are about 400 miles away (excuse the timing on the injured 6knots to the super dreadnought) can effectively target and destroy something out of the range of most ship-to-ship missile and with 1/1000th the mass or size.
