Gruenberg fixes maritime claims
Gruenberg

Official release from the Gruenberger State Department for UN Affairs:
In accordance with UN Resolution #74, The Law of the Sea, Gruenberg has claimed as national territorial waters all seas within 20 km of its coasts, both in the Bay of Abzhan-Rejak and the Bay of Solitude. In addition to this, Clause 1 of Resolution #74 gives provision for claiming waters within 20 km of a 'scientific research station'. The Gruenberger State Department for UN Affairs has as such permitted the Gruenberger State Department of the Merchant Navy to extend its maritime claims to some further 120 km of waters claimed based on their location within 20 km of National Scientific Research Stations (NSRS). These have been placed on several of Gruenberg's marine extraction facilities, such as the Blankard Oil Well and the 401 Gas Terminus.
Gruenberger national waters are policed by the High Sultanic Navy and are maintained as a Federal Reserved Trade Area (FRTA). Foreign vessels wishing to enter must ensure that they conform to Gruenberger maritime law, and pay a Shipping Privilege Contribution. The fee is not fixed, but instead dependent on the nature of the vessel and its cargo, and its proposed itinerary.
A typical NSRS is shown below:

It may be worth noting that the Resolution actually refers to an "internationally recognised scientific station". Simply placing a thermometer on commercial outposts is hardly a scientific station, and is not going to be recognised as such by the People's Republic, and we hope that fellow UN member-states will join us in denouncing this half-hearted attempt to waive the rules of international law.
We will not recognise these additional claims, and will reserve the right to transit these waters. Any attempt to interfere with this right will be considered an act of war.

It is curious that you place something that is not quoted in the resolution inside quotation marks. The actual text reads 'internationally recognised settled landmass or scientific research station' - as such, we would infer that the term 'internationally recognised' applies only to 'settled landmass'. Furthermore, we politely remind the so-called People's Republic of Shildonia that Gruenberg is not a technologically developed nation, and that our level of scientific equipment is, admittedly, not high. Furthermore, we believe there is immense value in measuring ambient temperature at key marine locations, and as such hold that our stations are, whilst not especially advanced, nonetheless sites of genuine scientific research. We instruct Shildonia to inform her fleets that attempts to evade the SPC and other conditions of entering our waters will be constituted as an act of war.

We will not take instructions on the movements of our forces from anyone, not least from such a backwards nation as yourself. We will not recognise your attempts to annex international waters under the guise of following a UN Resolution intended to have the opposite effect.
The frigate PRSS Dauntless has been detached from its escort duties of the PRSS Pogey Carrier Battlegroup and has been ordered to transit these illegally claimed waters. Any interference will be considered to be an act of war. She will arrive within 72 hours.

A naval group is to be assembled at PRSS Dauntless's likely entry point into Gruenberger sovereign waters. We assure the Shildonian people that should their vessel choose not to encroach on our territory, we will not consider this an invasion, and will not fire on your navy. However, should the Dauntless proceed on its present course, we will be forced to give the command to Commodore Schmeitzer to use all force at his disposal to repel the attempted illegal entry.

This is an outrage! Kjata Major thrives on imports! The fuel consumption of our shipping lanes is tailored to the UN resolution, even though we are not UN, though this atrocity is grounds for war!
The distance is way to far, by losing international waters our commerce expects to lose $20,000,000,000 this year alone! Delayed shipments and increased fuel costs are only the beginning of problems.
Kjata Major demands that since your claims are not 'internationally recognized' that you Gruenberg dismisses all claims otherwise a potential chance of war will arise over the economic damage that will cost more then a war to fix the gross misreading of the UN resolution!

We would like to reassure Kjata Major that we have no grievance with their nation. Furthermore, we would like to offer them use of our waters for fishing, research and transit purposes, so long as all vessels pay an SPC and observe Gruenberger marine law.

Any attempt to open fire on a Shildonian vessel carrying out lawful operations in international waters will constitute an act of war, and we will have no option but to carry out whatever military action is necessary to ensure that our vessels are no longer threatened by illegal and unprovoked attacks.
Maritime surveillance satellites in Medium Earth Orbit monitor the position of the Gruenberger fleet, and relay the data to the Dauntless so that her crew can try to approach from the most advantageous direction.

Subject: Gruenberg Situation
Random Facts:
1. Several nations in this world have maritime claims far in excess of Gruenbergs ones. GMC Military Arms and The Most Glorious Hack both have 200 mile zones, DA claims everything down to the continental shelf (Excluding the presence of other nations in the way, in which case it's split 50/ 50, of course), and there's a variety of other nations out there which run on comparable doctrines. *
2. We're quite surprised by Kjata Major's statistics. Do they have any kind of proof that they have any kind of traffic in the waters in question? The world is very big, and we have our doubts.
Besides, just moving a little further out tends to be vastly (Yes, vastly) cheaper than starting an outright war. It's what we're doing, really. Well, that or paying the fee, if that's the cheaper endresult.
3. We would note that Shildonia proclaiming that an attack on their frigate would be an act of war is highly amusing to us, given that they would already have ignored sovereignity, thus creating a (Possible) casus belli all by themselves. We suppose that the average Shildonian citizen applauds the option of wasting a few trillion $Monetary_Unit on pointless conflicts Shildonia has nothing to win, but lots to lose in?
Incidentally, we're all so slightly worried by the 'We will not take instructions on the movements of our forces from anyone' part of your statement. This isn't a declaration of war against anyone who claims any kind of sovereign territory, apart from Shildonia, is it? Such would be... Not particularly nice, if I may say so.

Hein would be killed if he spoke to the other Generals about what he had, but he was more powerful then all, but General Muramasa, General Masamune and General Minerva. General Muramasa was returning from a conflict with Greater Mactopia, General Masamune was on the Peacekeeper, General Minerva has Van Luxemburg. General Hein's day to shine was now!

OOC: It's the NS world. Changes in claims are threats to our business, since the nations you meantion are:
1. Much larger.
2. Much older
3. Haven't changed claims.
We don't need business to change all of a sudden. By changing the shipping lanes it is quite an adverse attack on our businesses. The shipping of food, oil, products and materials all comes from the sea. We can export and import it. Since Kjata has $560 billion commerce imports yearly this is quite high. As for exports are a rather low $300 billion, but this change means economic problems and delays in shipping. Thus our products aren't worth as much because our nation now has to travel farther and foreign markets don't want to wait or pay higher amounts for the same materials. Damaging business. Internation waters are international waters, one cannot claim it and expect everything to be fine the next day. It's an attack on our business. With our powerful economy we need to keep everything going up and paying tolls and changing routes because some wacko nation decides to claim it under the UN resolution is not how Kjata Major conducts business!

We strongly recomend that you delay any action until after the Dauntless has completed her transit of the disputed zone. If she is attacked, it will constitute a casus beli, which would add legitimacy to any action taken.
On the other hand, if she is not attacked, military action may not be necessary.
We hope that you will consider this advice before taking any rash action that may serve to harm our cause of ensuring that our vessels may freely traverse the worlds oceans.
Yours sincerely

(NS hours. I don't plan on backing down so unless you have anything else that needs to be done we can just skip forward to the actual engagement if you want.
The Dauntless is only a frigate, and she is outnumbered and probably outgunned so you might be able to do a fair amount of damage, or even sink her. After the reinforcements arrive though...)
The Dauntless continued steaming towards the disputed zone, making the occasional course change in an attempt to throw off any surveillance equipment that may be pointed at her.
The message from the Grunberger fleet was recieved, and relayed back to the Admiralty headquarters in Shildonia, but the response was simply to continue with mission.
Since it was likely that they would soon be in a combat situation, the Dauntless' captain began staging regular battle drills in an attempt to give the crew an extra edge should the need arise.

"We have her, sir," the young radar technician shouted, leaping up from his chair.
Commodore Schmeitzer walked over to the radar screen.
"You're sure this time?" They had managed several radar sightings, but each time the Dauntless had then engaged an evasion pattern and slipped away.
"Yes...wait...no, yes, I am sure. Positive sir."
"Ok."
Schmeitzer tapped the communications officer on his trembling shoulder.
"Send a message to Captain Gerschtrenka to fire a warning shot over the bow of the vessel the moment she crosses into our waters. If she continues undeviated, or begins and retaliatory action, send a general order to fire at will."

General Hein examined his precious secret operation. The sight was amazing to him. A nuclear missile housed inside the silo, this would obliterate everything if things went bad.
http://www.stageresearch.com/showcases/Nuclear/Nuke01.jpg
He walked over to his command center (in the silo) and saw that a group of attack ships were closing in. These ships were heading into the area at 50 knots, nearly unmatched speed in the naval world!
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/row/rus/sivuch-bora-s.jpg
The Bora class Guided Missile Corvette was General Hein's main naval ship, these speedy ships were loaded with anti-ship missiles. Harpoon launchers, specifically. Four chemical weapons, a SAM site and some guns. These ships were manned by 40 crew members each. Best of all...they were expendable.
Three approached the waters and found the Dauntless on the radar screen. Reporting this to General Hein he in turn sent a message to tell Shildonia.

Three ships are in your range. They are my fast-response ships. Adorn chemical suits and gas masks if they engage. They are carrying powerful SARIN guided missiles. Also there is VX inside some of the weapons. They are real killers. If your ship is attacked they are capable of firing anti-ship missiles with high explosives in addition to chemical weapons. We have more ships, but these were closest. Expect reinforcements in three hours.

Slowly, the guns of the HSS Greenface swivelled round to aim at the Shildonian frigate, thick flakes of rust cracking off the joints. Commodore Schmeitzer swallowed a dry lump in his throat. He'd never seen combat before - and now here he was fighting over a thermometer.
The Advanced Tactical Frigate (ATF) RMV Defiant is 45 minutes away from the disputed area.

IC: From behind the Shildonian frigate came three missiles, entering at a low arc. At a 15 degree angle! The Kjatan ships had fired, thinking the warning shot was intended as lethal.
The missiles were anti-ship and were going to shoot up at the ships just before terminal velocity. They neared approaching at Mach .9.
"READY! 2nd barrage!" yelled Hein over the radio on the three ships.
"Engage! Ready to fire. Awaiting confirmation on target." called the ship's gunners, they were already ready to fire again, before the first missiles had even landed. This meant one thing....chemical missiles.
"What the FUCK... sir."
The Captain watched as missiles and shells started flying ahead.
"Who fired first!"
The Captain was about to return fire.
"Gruenberg sir, unclear if it was a warning shot or not, but they're not entitled to warning shots at this point."
"Ok then, find the ship that fired first."
"Target on screen sir."
The good thing about ATF's was that it was fly-by-wire in the sense that during battle, huge blast shutters could be brought down and the main viewport was a 3D graphic.
"Ok, Put a missile on its gun and two missiles on it's deckhouse."
"Firing, sir."
3 Missiles left the deck of Defiant.

OOC: Ok, then I'll imagine the Shildonian frigate is holding off for the moment.
IC: Commodore Schmeitzer was walking nervously round the open deck to survey the fleet. Suddenly, a wall of solid steel noise reared to toss him back like a doll. He was sent flying back, sliding across the sagging, reeling metal. His face flowered up in a ball of pain. He rolled over. To his left, the HSS Permanent bobbed, completely gutted by the fireball that had swept through it. The pathetic cries of injured, broken men calling from the sea stabbed at his ears.
He did his best to pull himself upright, only to be landed back on his rump again by a second terrific boom that seemed to rend the very air around his head. Another vessel - he wasn't sure which - had just somersaulted through the air, landing in the churning black waters with a dead slap.
"Return fire, return fire!" he yelled, barely able to hear himself through the heavy ringing pounding his ears.
Losses:
HSS Permanent - destroyed
HSS Confucius - destroyed
HSS Reel - badly hit, significant loss of life to crew, starboard engines diabled
HSS Greenface - superficial damage, no loss of life
HSS Twinkletoes - no damage
HSS Grievous - no damage

Barrages of ship-to-ship missiles fired from HSS Greenface, HSS Twinkletoes and HSS Grievous
"Mother of fucking god," the sailor on the CIWS Check console on the bridge began "missiles imbound, DREAD guns firing!"
Several of the incoming missiles were hit just there.
However, one of the missiles, even though it was hit, continued on, striking the rear of the ship. It didn't really take anything important out, but it did crash into the LCAC Amphibious Bay, destroying 2 RHIB's and killing 3 Marines.
"Dammit! Return fucking fire!"
12 missiles were launched, along with the 127mm Railgun that was now out of it's alcove.
"Is anyone in the water over there? I want prisoners!..."

IC: Schmeitzer watched the missiles soar off with a vague pride. Up into the sky. He peered up. Almost into the clouds. He had to shield his eyes against the sun to make out the black dots, all nine of them. He squinted harder. Nine?
"Fuck."
His expletive was drowned by the profanity the front deck guns spewed shreds of steel like pencil sharpenings. A dull roar shook his every joint as the central command tower popped like a greasy zit behind him. He sent staggering forward as shrapnel tore past him. The ship lurched awkwardly - it wasn't holed, but it was dead in the water. He remembered the Academy training - to go down with your ship, at all costs. He felt the hot, thick blood oozing from his shoulder. Bollocks to that.
"Abandon ship," he called out raggedly. He looked around: bodies and worse littered the decks. He wasn't talking to anyone. He began to frantically scrabble with the lifeboat harnesses, glad that two engineers he didn't recognise arrived to help. Together, they span off into the cold embrace of the sea.

"FIRE! Second barrage!" yelled Hein immediately after the first wave hit. The missiles launched, but the radar picked up incoming enemy missiles.
"SHIT!" yelled the captain of the 115. "Deploy Metal Storm guns, fire until you destroy it! Rate of fire, 8."
The speedy hovercraft waited until the enemy missiles were close. Then all at once the incoming eight missiles were opened up on by the Metal Storm guns. The guns were a collection of 32 pods, each able to down anti-ship missiles.
The hovercraft fired and used all their rounds, but cleared the eight missiles. Though the pods were one-shot rounds. Due to space limitations they would be unable to fire the wall of steel if it happened again. Conventional means would put them in a far greater risk due to the close range of the ships.
Hopefully the second barrage of three chemical missiles will take out the remaining three ships. Each one was targeted by one missile.
OOC: I'm gonna assume your people are already in the water here, if they're not just assume this post is for after they are.

Schmeitzer's boat rolled and flailed wildly. Large vessels were appearing from the thick, salty mist - he didn't recognise them. He gazed out forlornly. The two remaining ships, kitted out with Gruenberg's top military technology, had shrivelled like plastic bags in an oven in the face of the onslaught. He could see Special Forces troops diving screaming into the ocean, their clothes burning, their arms flailing wildly at the stinking clouds of green sweeping the shattered decks. Kjatan Generals weren't normally as cruel as Hein, but his power is higher then the state. Meaning only Minerva would really pose a threat to him.
--------------
The boats were much faster then McKagan's forces, speeding at 50 knots over to the farther wreckage sites, they pulled many of the survivors aboard, they also gave antidotes and cleaned up the survivors of the chemical barrage.
The Sarin missiles weren't deadly if they surrendered quickly, it was General Hein's planning that if his ships were to go down, that so would every man on the opposing ships by the time they could recieve good medical care.
Being that ships were light and fast they were able to prevent many from drowning and easily help. The ships were also very under staffed, so they PoWs had ample space and room on the ship to relax and lay down.
-------------
OOC: The missiles pose no real threat to the troops who survived because no barrage came again which would have destroyed these weak vessels. It was a safety measure for ensuring the damage on the ships. Since Sarin takes awhile the effects will be minimal at most. The missiles themselves were probably more humane then napalm or various other weapons.
So in a sense we saved lives.

There was a suspicious smell in the corner. He moved to rub his pounding temples, forgetting his handcuffs, and sat back to grit his teeth as the metal yanked his wrists painfully. The ships were small, but decent. They all were well equipped with sufficent medical facilities onboard because of the fact that they used chemical warfare under Hein.
The boats began to head back to Kjata Major. When something unexpected happened.
A helicopter appeared right infront of the three boats. The captains got out and looked at the helicopter. It was General Lina.
The cute girl jumped down from the helicopter and landed on the boat. She had to have jumped down fifty feet or more! The boat converged and met infront of the General.
"Ma'am!" said Captain Le'sto "What brings you here?"
General Lina's eyes were a soft blue and her hair was also a dark blue, too much like Minerva. Her voice was soft, but stern.
"I'm here to collect the POW's, let's return them ok? We shouldn't imprison them. Umm....what's that smell?" she paused and sniffed the air.
Captain Le'sto blinked and laughed, "Oh its the..."
"Chemical Treatment drugs and vaccines, and showers...You used Sarin on them!?" cried Lina.
"General Hein's orders. It was that or use the High Explosive missile rounds."
"Aw...well I guess Hein was right, its either a bit of poisoning or total loss. Just make sure that nothing leaks out ok?" she continued.
A large amount of Chinooks appeared from above and General Lina ordered that all PoW's be loaded on. These were medical helicopters that were lightly armored and armed.

Once the mid-air loading operation had been complete they headed for Gruenberg land.
McKagan:
Under what terms will the prisoners be released? Gruenberg is naturally eager for a swift return of its citizens to her territory.
Simply that Defiant is allowed to be close enough to your waters to send in one heavy airlift with all of them to a coastal region.
We ask that you inform your allies in the region that we are peaceful, if we are not opposed we will either lift them in or meet up with one of your ships to exchange them.

We will clear an area at Merlefurt Port where the drop can be made. The craft of both Kjata Major and McKagan will be allowed free passage, but are expected to vacate Gruenberger airspace immediately once the prisoners have been released. We thank all involved for their cooperation in this matter. We will be sending salvage crews to collect what we can of our fleet, but agree that these are now international waters, and thus respect the rights of other nations to also deploy salvage operations.

OOC: I meant McKagan.

The POW Camp aboard Defiant is now empty.
The two skyships though, are packed, and headed towards the airport.
All the prisoners are handcuffed, but are being taken care of.

Schmeitzer wiggled uncomfortably. He could barely move his left arm, but he needed to scratch at the burning itch building there. The sweat was dripping off him. A burly guard roughly hauled him forward, pointing at a space between the glum prisoners.
"Sit."
He nodded feebly, and squashed himself down. They were going to be released - and at Merlefurt, too, his home town. There'd be an enquiry, of course, and he'd probably be court-martialled. But for now, he thought, at least I'm going home.

OOC: I had a massive post but it got lost...so I did a short one. Really sorry.
The General jumpped off the helicopter from over 50 ft and smiled at the guards. She instructed them that though the troops had been injured, surgery and replacement limbs were given. The mechanical 'parts' were superior then the original ones to.
Medicine and instructions on the future care of the troops was also provided to the nearest guard. Complete with CDs.
Three helicopters landed and helped transfer the PoW's to Gruenberg authorities.
"Any questions guys?" said General Lina, the nicest General in Kjata Major.

OOC: No problem. Jolt is a dildo-head poo-poo smellypants.
IC: Admiral Kerchet surveyed the ragged bundle. He sighed, and turned back to the slim, blue-haired figure.
"No, no, this is all in order." He coughed haughtily - addressing a woman as an equal, even a superior! It was a shameful day for Gruenberg. "I...I should like to thank you for returning our troops." He straightened up a little. "I will of course have to ask you to leave our territory now."
He turned on the spot, and stalked off. Somewhere, there was a little blancmange in a commodore's uniform. Well, not for long.
P.S. Ok if I do a Wiki article about this?

OOC: Umm go for it. Someone messed my stuff up and I didn't use wiki much after it. Though you can restore it if that happends. :)
General Lina smiled and looked at the pilot of her Chinook, and motioned up. The helicopters started up again and she called to Admiral Kerchet.
"Hey, Admiral! Don't forget that we aren't all bad. Lina is just in this for the freedom of the skies." she said as she waved.
The helicopter was taking off and she grumbled.
"Ahhh! Idiot! Wait for me!" she cried and jumped up at least twenty feet and jumped on the still open door. She waved bye to the Admiral and was soon out of sight.
"Try to ditch me again and I'll clip your wings. Hehe." taunted Lina, scolding the pilot.
"Sorry General Lina!"
"Eh...no big deal, let's go back home. I want to fly my plane. Helicopters aren't fast enough." she sighed. "Hope the troops are ok, they shouldn't blab too much about our technology, its not like they saw the base. They'd think we were aliens! Hehee!"
The helicopters sped home, the two Generals always have little conflicts with one another, but Hein was pressing his luck.

OOC: Wiki article done: http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/The_Battle_of_the_Thermometers.
IC: Gruenberg now considers hostilities at an end. Will a treaty need to be signed to assure this?
The airships flew back towards the frigate, randomly banking as if they were under attack from the ground, probably because they expected to be.

"Well, this was a sucessful op, wouldn't ya say, sir?"
"Indeed. Our Navy has close to 10,000 ships, our main objective is to show other nations that we mean business and to let them know that they shouldn't fuck with us," the blast shutters on the bridge opened to reveal the railgun for a few moments before it went back down, "someone engaged us, they lost half their navy to one of our frigates. I'd say it was a sucess."
Defiant powers down, but still heads back towards Algeristan, slowly, incase of a treaty signing or other attacks on non-hostile vessels.

(Typical. I go away for a few hours and when I get back it's all over :\
Nice Wiki article tho.)
The Dauntless suffered minor damage to her superstructure, though had the bombardment not been disrupted by the intervention of the Kjatan fleet the damage would have surely been far greater. For this we thank the Kjatan armed forces for their assistance, as well as those of McKagan.
The more seriously injured crewmen were flown to the Pogey to recieve medical attention, though most of the injured men were treated in the Dauntless' own infirmary.
We are pleased that the Gruenberger government has chosen to reverse its decision regarding this issue, though we regret that this decision only came after the loss of men and materials as a result of this fracas.

To all concerned parties:
We offer the use of Our Royal Flagship, the WarKayak "Floaty-Boat", as the location for the signing of your treaty, no matter how small the perceived significance of said treaty actually is.
Our WarKayak, while surprisingly small, is also inadequately armed, and offers little or no defence whatsoever, making it the perfect place to start forming that essential 'trust bridge' between your warring nations.
