Independence! [E20]

For several months, leaders of the four South African Colonies and representives of His Britannic Majesty's Government have negotiated to bring about peacefully what close to half a century of war and deceit could not: independence for South Africa, on good terms with Britain. Britain has merged the colonies of Transvaal, Natal, Cape Colony, and Orange River Colony into the Union of South Africa [hereafter referred to as South Africa], a self-governing dominion like those of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

GREAT BRITAIN, realizing that the terms of the Treaty of Vereeniging have been fulfilled, and deeming the current local government of the South African colonies to be in congruence with said Treaty, hereby grants the four colonies self-governance as the Union of South Africa.

SOUTH AFRICA, recognizing the need for continued good relations with the British Crown, will allow Royal Navy and Merchant Marine to dock in South African ports, and will honor all current agreements with the British Crown.

The Union of South Africa [hereafter referred to as UoSA] will be comprised of the four colonies of Natal, Transvaal, Orange River Colony, and Cape Colony. These will become provinces of the new dominion. As per the agreements of both parties, Louis Botha shall serve as the first Prime Minister, with national elections to take place every five years.

Pretoria has been named the administrative capital, Cape Town the legislative, and Bloemfontein the judicial capital. English and Dutch are the two official languages, though the various African dialects are recognized as being widespread, and the most used will be offered as elective courses of instruction in the school system.

Upon the signing of this Treaty, the UoSA will create a militia for self-defense, and will abide by the various international laws and customs which were signed by Britain during the time South Africa was a British possession (1877-1880, 1900-1906).

South Africa will continue to maintain close relations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and its Commonwealth.
