The Great Republic of Caladonn

Ruler: Chancellor Aramil Holimion, Representing the SCP (The Senate and the Caladonnian People)
Aramil is the Chancellor of Caladonn, heading the Caladonnian Senate, an elected body of 60 members.

Population: 500,000
The population of Caladonn is mainly in the northern, coastal part of the country, although new legislation is encouraging settlement of the southern part.

Capital City: Tor Caladonn
Tor Caladonn is situated on the coast of northern Caladonn. Here, the Senate meets. It is the largest and oldest city of Caladonn, with over 70,000 people.

Other Cities: Tor Jeriath, Tor Helecar, Tor Auren, Tor Incomion, Tor Orlan
These cities are situated throughout Caladonn. Tor Jeriath and Auren are on the coast, while Tor Orlan is inland and Tor Helecar and Incomion are new cities in the south.

Military: 15,000 (3%)
-Army: 5,000 men: 3,000 Spearmen, 1,750 Archers, 250 Ballistamen (125 ballistas)
The Army of Caladonn is comprised of Spearmen, Archers, and ballistas. The Spearmen wield a 10 foot long spear, tipped with steel. They are heavily armoured, in interlocking steel plates riveted together, covering the torso and upper arms. They also wear helmets which leave the face open, and greaves on the lower legs, with a chainmail skirt covering the upper legs and greaves on the lower arms.
The Archers of Caladonn are more lightly armoured, with the same banded armour on the torso, but with just a helmet and chain skirt other than that. They are equipped with a long composite bow, usually around six feet tall, which the highly trained soldiers can fire six aimed shots a minute, with a maximum range of 800 feet.
The ballistas are large machines made of wood, to be easily transportable. They can fire up to three shots a minute, with a crew of two men to reload, etc. The ballista bolts are five feet long, and can skewer through enemy lines.
Both the spearmen and archers carry 25-inch swords for backup, and large rectangular shields, covering from the head to the knees. The archers have a slit in the top of the shield, allowing them to place it on the ground and fire through. The spearmen have indentations at either side, for the spears to go through when in a shield wall.
The army typically forms up with the spearmen in the center, with archers and ballistas either on the flanks or behind. The spearmen form a shield wall with their spears coming through the indentations in their shields. Sometimes, in the face of heavy enemy missile fire, the spearmen in the ranks further back will raise their shields over their heads.

-Navy: 5,000 men: 50 each in 100 longships
The longships of the Caladonnian navy are seaworthy, fast vessels. They have 40 rowers, 20 on each side, but for high-seas sailing usually use a large square sail on the only mast. There is also a jib sail, that runs on the rope from the mast to the bow. The ship is clinker-built, with overlapping planks joined by steel rivets. The hulls are flat-bottomed, with a keel to help insure stability. Unlike the merchant ships of Caladonn, the longships are open-air, making conditions for the crew hard in storms. The ship is steered by a steerboard in the stern, and captained by a captain behind the helmsman.
Of the 50 men in each boat, 40 are usually at the oarlocks. All are armoured in the archer's fashion, due to the fact that excess weight on a ship is not a good thing. The rowers fasten their shields to the sides of the ship, using the holes reserved for spears on land to put their oars through. Of the other ten men, two are the helmsman and captain, while the other eight perform various other jobs and hoist the sails.
30 men are armed with spears and swords, while the other twenty use bows and swords. The spears are used less at sea, however.

-Logistics: 5,000 men: 1,000 in ships, 1,500 in ports, 1,500 in caravans, 1,000 in cities
The Logistics men of Caladonn are spread out throughout the land, supplying the military. They are divided into workers in the cities and ports, who supply the ships and soldiers when they return, and the caravan and ship men, who travel with the army to supply them. All are equipped with swords in case they are attacked, but are usually protected by the regular troops.

-Reserves: 10,000 men
These are trained soldiers, outfitted with basic weapons, who can be called up to defend Caladonn. However, although they train regularly, they are effectively civilians.

IRON OR STEEL?
Here is what I found on steel in this period...

It is controversial whether the Romans used steel. According to Manning, “there is no evidence for widespread, regular, intentional production of steel in the Roman Empire,” (Manning 148). The problem is that the only essential difference between iron and steel is the amount of carbon in the metal. Regular wrought iron has a carbon content of about 0.5 percent and steel has a carbon content of 1.5 percent. It is possible that this much carbon was imparted to the blade by the charcoal used to heat the metal as the smith forger the blade. This contact between the metal and charcoal created a sort of outer layer of steel (Manning 148) in a process called carburization. It is doubtful that the Romans were aware that this process was taking place. They probably just observed that blades which were heated and reheated were stronger than those that were not (Healy 232). As the iron is reheated and hammered repeatedly, a strange thing takes place in the blade: it becomes an iron blade with thin strips of steel throughout. This works out very well because it gives the blade the strength of steel, with the “resilience of iron” (Manning 148).

This is how I am using it.
Pardon me if this won't work, but this is what I was thinking of for steel.

ok...i was thionking of actual steel like it is wholly steel not bands of it within iron...that is fine and i might just reffer to it as strengthened iron...

Well, I don't really want to change everything, but now I've posted what it really is in the thread anyway.
