Outskirts of South Korea

A group of scouts had just returned. They had reported a strong empire that stretched for many miles and had many soldiers. They might not be able to defeat us but they would injure us. A quick conference was held and it was decided that diplomats would be sent with gifts to make an alliance with these people. Four diplomats were sent out on horses. They carried beautifully crafted swords with an eagle encrested on it. The eagle was a sign of the power and majesty of the sword. They also carried some jewels. They headed into North Korea and beyond to meet the Mongol Empire.

OOC: Just why do you care if I'm trying to start relations with the Mongols?

IC: The diplomats saw the group coming and stopped their horses. The group appeared to be from the Han empire west of them. They knew they had no chance to escape. So they just hoped that they wouldn't injure them too terribly.

"Please don't hurt us. We will not reveal your objective to the people of this land."

OOC: I still don't know how your guys saw mine. I didn't leave at the three way border. I left more in the middle so unless your border guards have REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY good eyes they wouldn't have seen them.

IC: "For what reason would we be destroyed? You don't even know where we come from. However would your country be interesting in diplomatic relations?" replied the diplomat.

Meanwhile a boat was filled with tons of food and some jewels and was sent south. It eventually curved west and met the land called the Pyu Empire.

IC: "Very well. We shall return to our homes. But would your country be interesting in diplomatic relations?" the diplomat repeated his question.

The Chinese name is "Funan", a translation of the local name. In the local tongue, "Nokor Phnom" means "Land of Mountains" ("Nokor" means "Land", "Phnom" means "Hill" or "Mountain" )

Our principal seaport is O Keo, on the Mekong Delta (http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Image:Mekong-delta.jpg) off the Gulf of Thailand (in the satellite photo, it's at the head of the bay in the upper right).

You may put in there and will be greeted by local officials (we have a fairly advanced civilisation, dating back to before 350 B.E.*). It's fairly large city of over 500 ha (i.e., hectares - over 1250 acres), about 1.5 km x 3.5 km (1 mi. x 2 mi.). Our capital is bigger, of course.

*B.E. stands for Buddhist Era, or [I]Buddhasakarat. It is obtained by adding 544 years to C.E. (a/k/a A.D. dating). Thus, the game begins in 545 B.E.

The diplomats returned to Korea with the promise that the Han Dynasty would soon send diplomats. When they returned they sent word to the warchief.

Meanwhile the trading ship sighted land. They docked at a port called O Keo. The captain disembarked and went to look for someone to trade with.

Does your captain speak Sanskrit or Chinese? Aside from Khmer, those are the only two languages spoken.

If he doesn't, you're going to need to find someone aboard your ship who does, because we certainly don't speak Japanese and you likely don't speak Khmer.

BTW. the people here are very dark skinned, and do not (yet) look at all Chinese; the look more like a cross between the Tamil of South India and the Malays or Aboriginal peoples of Indonesia and Australia. They also walk around mostly (or completely) naked; if that shocks your Japanese sailors, you may want to take that into effect.

OOC: Yeah he speaks Chinese. Pretty poor captain if he could only speak one language.

IC:The crew of the trading ship were surprised as the people in the port city were dark skinned, a sign of ugliness in their own country. They were also frightened at the openness of the people as all of them were almost or completely naked.

As for trade, we don't need rice or fish, unless you have some kind of fish we've never seen. The jewels we will accept in trade; we can offer you rubber and dyed fabrics in return (batiks and the like). We also like your metal work and your silks, but you didn't bring those in bulk (we noticed the ones you wore and carried, and expressed interest).

You can travel in our country and learn more about us, if you like.

The captain set up a trading agreement with one of the officials. He would send trade them a supply of silks and metals and in return get rubbers and dyes. He and the crew stayed for a week and learned a little of the Khmer language and culture than left and returned home.

technicaly china has a monopoly on silk till the 1400 because the byanyines stole them.

OOC: Well Japan has silks too and I think he meant kimonos, which China doesn't have. Also, what are ANDCES?
