Broadcast to all nations of the world:
The Shipyards at Wuther and Farthing (a branch of The Nine Military Storefront) Is about to unveil the Next Generation of Naval Warfare! do you remember the first time you saw or even heard of the colosal super dreadnaught class of ships? how Nation Statesian naval warfare was advanced and complicated by the addition of one ship all those years ago? While those ships still look impressive in real life and on order of battle charts and intelligence reports, the SUperDreadnaught class is soon to be obsolete. As powerful and deadly as the SuperDreadnaughts are, they suffer many drawbacks that leave the seas wide open for a new type of warship.
1. Price: its simple, who has a fw hundred billion to several trillion USD to shell out for a single ship that, as powerful as it is will only seldom see use in anything buts a show of force ad only then when its surrounded by a fleet that costs more than the ship itself?
2. Size: Face it, you can put all the point defense and anti missile systems you want on and around it but a superdreadnaught is still a awfully hard target to miss, even from orbit. you can rail all day long about the invincibility of your ship due to its surrounding fleet but if you're enemy launches enough missiles he's bound to hit something and that something might be vital, what use is a 300 billion dollar ship if its gun tubes are bent, or the turret electronics are scrambled by an emp or the radar is destroyed, or the bridge? and with modern explosives a single hit could go a long way towards one of those results and all the armor in you can safely put on a ship will do little to save you against a good bunker buster munition to the engine compartment.
3. Speed: Face it, your 300 billion dollar super ship is going nowhere fast no matter what condition its in. 30 or so knots is pretty much the maximum and its surrounding fleet wil have to stay back with it. that means that opponents any reasonable distance from you have anywhere from weeks to months to prepare one of the modern militaries many superdreadnaught killing traps, from minefields to sea floor weapons platforms there are many things that can be set up in a superdreadnaughts rather predictable plodding course that will leave it decidedly un-combat worthy.
4. Logistics: A Superdreadnaught has a crew compliment of something like a large phonebook and that means that everyday, thousands and thousands of sailors need to eat, recieve their mail, exercise, sleep, drink and many other things, superdrednaughts that will be on deployment for any length of time (and at the speed its moving it will HAVE to be for a length of time just to get there) there will be supply ships, and those supply ships are vulnerable, even if your dreadnaught has all the supplies it needs the fleet surounding it probably won't, everything from food to diesel fuel and spare parts will need to be shipped to your ships and those shipments are vulnerable.
and finally
5. Purpose: SUperdreadnaughts are built to do anything from force projection (via usually mulipe flight decks) to gun support (via 20+ in. guns) and even amphibious assault (via its own troop and landing craft compliment) the trouble is that it is surrounded by a fleet that effectively encompasses its entire combat enevelope, a super dreadnaught and it's accompanying fleet is redundant in the extreme and redundancy in this case comes to the tune of around 300 billion dollars that could be spent elsewhere just as effectively.
At this point you might be wandering where all this is leading? Perhaps a new type of ship? A supderdreadnaught hunter? a Submarine? One of the traps that was mentoned before?
No, This is leading to the single most innovative new idea in naval warfare since before the superdreadbaught itself. its not one ship, or even four or five or a hundred, its an infinite number of ships, each unique or common as rain, ships that fulfil the exact needs of your navy at any given moment, ships that are affordable, versatile and durable, sleek ships as deadly in their own right as dreadnaughts or as tame as a simple fleet supply ship. The Next Generation of the Fleet is coming and you are invited.
All nations are invited to send a small represenative contingent (not more than five prersons) to a gala to unveil the newest additions to Wuther and Farthing's not inconsiderable lineup of naval equipment. Transportation will be provided by Mondoth Air in first class or embassy class. at the gala food and entertainment will be provided followed by a presentation on the next generation navy followed by a question and answer session. and then transportation back to your nation.
