An estimated 7.8 million Chinese individuals have signed a petition that was just submitted to the government. The petition, if approved, would make Mandarin and official language. Only two other groups able to submit a petition that requires at least 2.5 million witnessed endorsements or signatures. They were 25.9 million Jews who asked for Hebrew to be made an official language and 16.2 million Muslims submitted one for Arabic.
Current estimates indicate that Hebrew has a 45% chance of becoming and official language by 2010, 35% for Arabic and 10% for Mandarin. Parliament is considering whther to hear the Hebrew Case as it is now called. Following the stated three are*:
