The Gl-12 is a Land launched anti-ship missile it carries a 2000 lbs conventional warhead covered in a tungsten tip for penetration. It has an effective range of 3000 miles. However, the most defining feature is its ability to do a mach 10 hypersonic dash towards the target for the last 500 miles. Until the dash the speed is mach 2 and it gildes on two "stub wings" at thirty thousand feet. When the dash begins the first stage is jettesoned and the missile decends to 100 ft. Thirty seconds before impact the missiles active radar detects its target and it drops down to thirty feet unless sea conditions make this impossible. The missile is designed to penetrate ten ft. and then explode makeing a hole in the side big enough to sink an aircraft carrier. Each missile is 500,000 dolars.

It depends how big the missile is. Im thinking SLBM sized. Then again, considering that it costs less than a Harpoon Im inclined to agree with you. People really are hopeless at pricing missiles...

A missile like that would cost 10s of millions of dollars, damn.

I'm thinking Long March 3B sized missile here. How is anyone not going to notice that thing and try to shoot it down is beyond me. And for $500,000. You must be uber-FT with nano-tech or something to do that.

Coming back to the thread i realize i left two zeros off of the price

They are actually 50,000,000

The reason why it dosent get shot down is simply its faster than the response will be plus trying to shoot down something moving at mach 10 isnt easy most missiles will just miss.

You have to remember that if you've got a missile flying at mach 10, it has to fly high because if it doesnt then:

1) Your engines wont work unless you're using some FT-y

2) It will melt because of the air density.

Now flying high might sound good, but it isnt. It means that you can be detected from a long way away, and the enemy has plenty of responce time in which to fire missiles at you (and if you have SCRAMjet missiles that go at mach 10, then the enemy can have SCRAMjet SAMs that also go at mach 10). If you have a slow missile, it can sea-skim and fly under the radar, which means that the enemy doesnt have much responce time and they cant respond with their mach 10 missiles. So it's actually quite balanced.
