Chapter One: The Master's retribution
Kalgar's Throne-Room, 36 hours after the Space Hulk's capture.
At the far end of the massive throne-room, Lord-and-Master Kalgar sat at a large throne that he rarely found himself in. He looked weary, his hands in his wavy black hair. The wall behind his throne was occupied by 2 Space Marines clad in Terminator armor. The two walls adjacent to his were each lined with Space Marines in silver armor. They bore the emblem of Gronde, as did the Terminators. Standing inconspicuously on either side of the entry-way were two Space Marines with black robes over their armor. They bore the symbols of the Dark Empire's inquisition. There was a tense, though undefinable, mood in the room. This was reiterated by the forced silence.
The silence was finally broken by the sound of the metal double doors swinging open and hitting the wall. Two resoundly different figures entered the chamber. One was yet another space marine, though the markings on his armor indicated that he was of a much higher rank. The second figure was that of a normal man, in Gronde Naval dress. They were Chapter Master Kalath of the 3rd Marine Chapter and Supreme Admiral Enjire IV of the Imperial Alpha Navy. They walked up to Kalgar's throne, bowed, and then stood at attention. All eyes were on Kalgar now. His normal friendly and comfortable expression had been replaced by a look of supressed disgust and distain. There was an obvious vibe of fear and respect comming from the two new arivals towards Kalgar.
Kalgar stood up and walked down to his two trusted officers. He stood before them in waiting silence, as if anticipating an explanation that would never come. After several uncomfortable moments of silence, Kalath spoke up.
"You summoned us, my lord?" asked Kalath. Kalgar turned to the Space Marine and took a deep breath.
"Yes, I did," affirmed Kalgar. "And do you, by any chance, know why I summoned you?" Kalath was stunned for a moment but quickly hid his confusion.
"Surely, you wish to know the status of the Space Hulk we captured," the Marine commander suggested, trying to look as casual as possible. Kalgar's expression now bore the faintest suggestion of a clever smile. He had just though of a new way to approach this situation.
"Yes, of coarse," replied Kalgar. "I was greatly interested when I got you message regarding this matter. You have secured it, correct?" Enjire appeared as though he wanted to interject, but he waited his turn.
"Affirmative, the Space Hulk was captured and transported into Great Forge space," said Kalath. "The mission was a success, most definately worth the expended capital." Kalath seemed to be feeling slightly more comfortable now.
"I see. So what resistance did you encounter while trying to claim this massive structure in neutral space?" Inquired kalgar.
"A small group of ships arrived from a faction known as Mini Miehm, as well as some Chronosian Chaos forces," explained Kalath. "Fortunately, due to our own ingenuity and the Help of some Indra Prime Temporal craft, these threats were dealt with swiftly."
"Very good," complimented Kalgar. "However, you logs state that, later in the engagement, you joined forces with Mini Miehm. Why is this?"
"There were several platoons of Miehm infantry on the Hulk," answered Kalath. "We went in after them, but we decided to unite to fight a greater threat--" Kalath tried to stop himself, but he knew that it was too late.
"You mean the fallen?" asked Kalgar in a coldness that was unlike him.
"Yes, there were fallen ships in the sector of space, but we routed them."
"Then why would you need the help of Miehm infantry?" Kalgar's voice was slightly louder and contained a hint of anger.
"We needed manpower to repel Chosen landings in the Hulk," kalath attempted to explain. It would be no use now.
"Wrong!" exclaimed Kalgar, his anger becomming slightly more evident now. "You offered the Mini Miehm infantry forces an alliance before any Fallen asualt teams had even been launched from their ships."
"But, my lord. We always like to plan ahea--"
"Silence!" Kalgar strode up to the once proud marine. "You needed their help to dispatch of the Fallen's "goddess." Is that correct?"
"But what is wrong?" Kalath asked desperately. "We united to fight a common enemy?"
"There is nothing wrong with that," said Kalgar. "However, you then made a deal with the common enemy and allowed them to rescue their supposed goddess." Kalath made an attempt to save himself.
"But we were simply trying to save the lives of your men," kalath tried to explain. "We wanted to avoid more bloodshed and simply capture the Hulk."
"But you are a warrior, as are Gronde's marines," concluded kalgar. His anger was obvious, though it was not explosive. "And as such, you never allow the enemy to secure their object. And you NEVER help them do it! Do you have any idea what you have done? Not only have you committed treason, you have allowed the greatest threat to our ally, Corpsac, to escape." Kalgar stopped and took deep breath. He almost looked sad now.
"But my lord--" tried kalath, but he was cut off.
"And what's worse, is you knew that. You allowed you greed to come before you loyalty."
"Master Kalgar," Kalath said weakly. "Forgive me..."
"It's out of my hands this time." Kalgar motioned to something behind Kalath. Before the marine could react, the two Dark Empire inquisitors were upon him. He let out a cry of pain when an inquisitor admistered him an electric shock. He was dragged from the room. Kalgar then turned to Enjire who was now on his knees before him.
"I have failed you, Kalgar," Admiral Enjire confessed. He held his plasma pistol towards Kalgar. "Please, execute me, let me die with honor."
"No, old friend," kalgar said with a hint of resentfullness. "Such an honor is not deserved by you."
"But--"
"Get out of my sight!" Kalgar turned from Enjire, leaving hims to walk shamefully out the door. Two marines closed them after him. This had not been a good day. There were not likely to be many good days in the future either. Kalgar took another deep breath.
