In a surprise parliamentary coup, Prime Minister Benjamin Tarnefi has been ousted by minority leader Fruin Utui’ini. Citing yesterdays disastrous economic collapse, Minister Utui’ini called for a vote of replacement and emerged victorious.

“I don’t mean to belittle the progress my predecessor has made in education, but he has shown that he is incapable of managing this great countries economic development. We have the best educated, most intelligent and talented population on the planet, yet the average family barely makes enough to survive. It is time for change, time for a new leader to bring our nation firmly into the first world. I am both honored and pleased at our Ministries trust and confidence in me, and I will not fail to bring us the prosperity we so earnestly deserve.”

Minister Utui’ini, who will be sworn in later today, singled out Sufi Aviation as the model for future economic development. The aircraft manufacturer recently began to export their products and their experiment is widely viewed as a tremendous success.

In his victory speech in parliament he stated that he will be retaining most of the current ministers, planning on replacing only the Minister of the Economy.

Mr. Tarnefi could not be reached for comment.

I’m speaking to you from the front lawn of the parliament building where Fruin Utui’ini has just been sworn in as Prime Minister. Also sworn in was Ferdinand Kaoi’ili who is the new Minister of the Economy. Outside the grounds the crowds are thick with both protesters and Utui’ini supporters, many of the protesters carrying signs condemning him as too violent – obviously for his role in putting down the Wapti rebellion in 1997. Insults are being traded between the two groups, but as of yet there has been no violence from either camp.

Citing pressing domestic issues, the Prime Minister begged off what was going to be an impromptu press conference at the end of the ceremony and retired to O’anu Hall.

Economic Minister Ferdinand Kaoi’ili, in a press conference this evening, formally invited the nations of the world to invest in the Aysheaian economy.

"Aysheaia is open for business!" exclaimed the Minister. "We are ready, willing and able to provide foreign corporations with an ideal business environment. This is a new tack for our nation, and I am fully confident that it is the right one to take!"

In other news, the protests surrounding todays parliamentary coup were marred by violence that left one man dead and another in police custody. The two men, Parim Deau'u and Taro U'uani, had been arguing when Deau'u struck U'uani with an antique Aysheaian war club. Police, who were stationed around the protesters, quickly subdued Deau'u while EMTs attempted to treat U'uani. Despite their attempts, U'uani was pronounced dead on the scene.

Prime Minister Utui’in condemned the attack and urged his supporters to exercise restraint.

Earlier this morning Prime Minister Fruin Utui’ini proposed Aysheaia withdraw from the United Nations. Speaking afterwards to a cheering crowd of supporters, he had this to say:

"That august body is devoted only to maintaining the economic success of their already wealthy members, while developing nations are bogged down in regulations designed only to maintain the status quo! You can't stop the future, and our future is progress!"

In other news, protests continued around Parliament Hall. Responding to last night’s tragic death, police have stepped up their presence in the area. Riot gear-clad police have been stationed near each group of protesters, as well as enlisting the fire engines to establish a "no protest" zone separating the two camps.
