Naval News AP- The High Council of Jurai have ordered a recall of all capital elements of the Fleet for a major refit and upgrade. This has been deemed necessary for the 'defensive purposes' of the system. The upgrade is expected to take two (NS) years for the 2 flagships we have, one year for the Star Destroyers and Cruisers, six months for ships between 900 and 1600 meters, and three months for all ships between 600 and 900 meters. Smaller ships will get a boost in thruster power for extra speed. Thanks to Godular for the usage of their shipyards, as we would never have been able to do it in the timeframe demanded otherwise.
The upgrade is expected to consist of increased firepower and shielding, increased reactor efficiencies, in exchange for somewhat decreased speed (except for ships 500m or less), and more efficient sensor packages. Fighters and other light craft are currently not slotted for upgrades at the moment.
In other news, the new Sniper-class Star Destroyer has just rolled out of local shipyards, after many years of research and development. They superficially look like other ISDs but with one difference: They don't have hangar bays, or at least primary ones. Instead, the primary hangar bays have been refitted to carry SPHA-T (Self-Propelled Artilliery-Turbolasers), and their reactors have been specially modified to handle the load. The secondary bay will still carry shuttles, but no fighters. The Star Destroyers are designed to address an issue: long-range heavy artillery bombardment in support of the missile cruisers. They are expected to stay at the edge of battle and 'snipe' enemy ships of interest (flagships, comms ships, etc). Thus, they are extremely powerful offensively and defensively and in EW, but have only 1/3 the thrust of other ships. Military plans call for at least 20 initial Sniper Destroyers over the next few years, and another ten to fifteen beyond that.
