It was mid-morning when the first ship of the Roon class left the slip and hit the water, they were destined for the port city of Istanbul, to enter Turkish service. Its decks glistened with the water of the Black Sea as its turrets mounting their 9.4-inch guns looked off the bow and towards the harbour exit for the open water. The skeleton crew on board would ferry the warship to Istanbul where a ceremony would name the ship and the German sailors would hand the ship over to the Turkish government.

Across the harbour sat the shipyards hard at work constructing vessels for the Imperial German Navy that would become part of the Black Sea Fleet which would look after Germany's interests in the Black Sea and the surrounding areas. While there were the familiar armoured cruisers being constructed, there sat a few ships that were of an almost foreign design, nothing that had been seen in the German Navy before. The hulls closely resembled that of a battleship, yet the armoured belt wasn't nearly as thick as it should have been and the ship looked as though she would be lacking in firepower, but nonetheless, work continued as it would have if the ship were any other.
