Lucien Bouchard is getting old. Still a vibrant soul, at 67 the Quebecois nationalist knew that he was in a race against time in order to fulfill what he believed was Quebec's natural destiny. He believed that Quebec had lived for far too long under what he called "the British Yoke" and feels that now was the time to break free.
His problem? The current Quebecois nationalist leaders are getting old. His partner, Jacques Parizeau, was 75 and nearing retirement, and the man that they picked as their successor- Gilles Duceppe- has so far proven to be too soft. They were also beginning to wonder if the separatist movement's headquarters needed to be moved- being in the heart of "English Quebec" may be hurting their chances.
So they pressed their luck and started a campaign in more separatist Quebec City, intending to hold a meeting at the famous Chateau Frontenac hotel. Everything they did was done in secret, with the use of word-of-mouth and small pamphlets to spread the word, as well as the title "The Quebec City Beautification Project" for the meetings, a title only Quebec separatists knew. Here, the seperatists would be finding new blood, from which it could be hoped that a new, young successor for movement leadership could be found.
