History

The original Cotland was the small provinces of Kirov and Ivanovo, who was ruled by the blood-thirsty warlord Vladimir the Bloody. It was he who invaded and conquered most of the provinces in present day Cotland over a time period of only 6 years. Only Tartarstan remained. In 1102 BC Vladimir the Bloody was killed in an assault on the Tartarstani capitol village of Kazan (present-day Cotlandstad). His oldest son Ivan, aged 4 at the time, took over the throne, but was overthrown shortly after for having 198 persons killed because they didn't allow him to eat candy before dinner. The next in line was Harald Rodoks, a foreign mercenary in Vladimir’s army. He invited a lot of friends from Norway, and made an empire which he named Cotland, which means “a land filled with beautiful women” in ancient Norwegian. This was the first Empire of Cotland.

After 100 years, 26% of the population consisted of descendants of the Norwegian settlers. After a further 100 years, 74% were descendants from the Norse settlers. The rest were Russian, and the two populations came along well. In 1138, the inhabitants of Tartarstan decided that they too wanted a part of the action, and offered the ruler of Cotland, Harald Rodoks, the loyalty and power of Tartarstan and all her resources if they could join the Cottish Empire. Over the century, Cotland fought off everyone that tried to invade, finally ending up as the most powerful nation in the region, both territorially, military and economically. The Empire stretched from the steppes of Siberia to the Baltic States, from the White Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south. Parts of western Norway were also involved in the Empire, as a colony of Cotland. This period, later dubbed the “golden age of Cotland”, lasted for 200 years. However, in 1356, the Empire crumbled due to the black plague killing more then 40% of the population. Several of the former provinces fell out and became independent states. Things were looking bad.

Over the years of the middle ages, Cotland was what we today consider a third world country. It consisted only of the provinces of Kirov and Ivanovo. This time of decline lasted for 300 years, until the great revival in 1728 when Howard the great declared himself Emperor and once again returned Cotland to its former glory, convincing many of the provinces to return to the Empire and conquering those who did not. By the time he was finished in 1771, Cotland was once again a world power, ruled by the glorious Emperors. This glory has lasted until today. As a result of this glory, many Britons came to Cotland and settled down, giving present-day Cotland an overweight of English names for the people. Their language still remains strongly influenced by Norwegian.

The end of the second Empire of Cotland came when parlamentarism came into play in the world in the late 19th century. In 1881, the population forced the abdication of Emperor Joseph IV and introduced a Parliament and an elected government. They gave the name of the new republic the Free Land of Cotland, and the leader was the Elected Leader. Until the end of the 1930's, Cotland was a true democracy. Then, the Commanding General in Cotland, General Sergey Hanghigh, staged a coup, causing a 10 year reign of terror until the resistance movement, who were located in the free colony of Egypt, finally stood up against the dictator with the people behind them. Finally, in 1949, all of Cotland was free yet again. Despite the freedom, it would take 3 years for the new constitution to be finished, and elections to be arranged.

The first elected leader in Cotland after the coup was Mr. James Klarseth (Cottish People's Party), who sat in office from 1952 to 1973, being the most popular elected leader ever. He was a lead figure in the resistance movement, and considered the father of Cotland. He had a heart attack and died in 1983. Another major incident in Cotland was the assassination of Elected Leader Mr. Bill Farout (Left side Party), in 1992. The assassin, a youth from an extreme-right wing party with roots to Nazism, was shot dead by members of the Electoral Guards, the bodyguards of the Cottish government. The last Elected Leader was Mr. Thomas Rothsky, the leader of the Cottish Royalist Party.

In the year 1998, there was a large scandal concerning the Cottish Parliament and massive corruptions to politicians in leading positions. Parliament refused to comment on these matters and thereby caused their own downfall. In the year 2000, Elected Leader Thomas Rothsky declared that he had no intention to answer to a Parliament filled with criminals and opened for a national vote on the future of Cotland. He gave the Cottish people three choices: The return of the Empire, the introduction to a Socialist State, or the continuation of the corrupt republic. The people of Cotland voted for the return of the Empire with a landslide. 97.8% of the votes! For their first Emperor in 110 years, the people chose their former Elected Leader, Thomas Rothsky as Emperor. Parliament accepted on the condition that Cotland would be a constitutional empire, IE that the Parliament would have control of things while the Emperor merely acted as a puppet. Thomas accepted the position and assumed power as Emperor Thomas the first. This meant that Cotland would require a new constitution, and the corrupt Parliament gave the task of creating that constitution to the new Emperor. This proved to be a massive mistake for them. The Emperor grabbed the opportunity and, with the help of some allies within the military, made a new constitution that turned Cotland into a true Empire. In it, he disbanded Parliament and instead introduced limited, but direct democracy. The people got to chose who they wanted to act as the closest council to the Emperor. And the way the Emperor managed to pass this new constitution was simple, yet genius. He had armed soldiers positioned at each representative and ordered the soldiers to shoot anyone who voted against the constitution. It was passed unanimously, and Parliament was disbanded shortly thereafter.

In later times, the Emperor has done much to increase the standard of living among Cottish citizens, and passed several laws to halt illegal immigration, drug use and criminal activity. For example, Cotland has a reputation of being one of the countries in the world with the harshest punishments for crimes. He has also done quite a bit to reunite the former Empire, and he has succeeded. This was achieved by use of diplomatic means, but also by means of the glorious Imperial Armed Forces, which have recently been through a massive refurbishing, and is now more powerful than ever.

Thanks to the large amounts of natural resources, Cotland is currently self-sufficient with among others oil, natural gas, iron, steel, wood and most wood products. This means that Cotland has little need to import vital items, but nevertheless it gives Cotland a good trade-profit from international trade, which is the lifeblood of the Cottish economy.

For some nations, Cotland might seem like a rich nation they can easily take over and turn into a colony of their own. However, not all that shines is gold. Cotland enjoy strong and long friendships with such nations as the Empire of Layarteb, the Teutonic Military Order of North Germania, the Roman Empire and the Holy Republic of Hawdawg, just to mention a few. This usually deters people from attacking Cotland, but it is rumored that the Empire maintains a mighty arsenal of Weapons of Mass Destruction for use as a last-ditch defense. Just in case.

My observations:

i) Nice history

ii) Past the history; your factbook is bland, but most are (including mine). I think the style is getting bored. I was infact thinking of doing my factbook entirely in German. I even have a German translation of my old factbook saved on my hard drive.

iii+iv) The whole Emperor/parliament situation left me unconvinced, as does your nation. Its too...perfect. Parliament is the obvious baddy, despite depending on the public; meanwhile this Emperor is portrayed as all benevolant and society is perfect under his reign. Farmina's golden era was full of butchery, inequality and poverty.
