After watching the War of the Worlds movie I thought it would be a cool idea to start a War of the Worlds based RP, I thought it would be cool to combine some stuff from both the book (martian flying machines, and the black smoke) and the movie (shields, though to a lesser degree), if you have any comments plese post them...

EDIT: And I need help finding a way to kill them so they are not invinicble like in the movie.

Why not use bio-weapons, or somehow have someone manage to capture an alien craft to use against the other aliens.

First I believe bio-weapons and WMDs require no skill to RP with, you just say "I launch X number of missiles at you!!!" and your done, and the hi-jacking idea has been done many other times, and who says you'd even be able to pilot it? Let alone understand it.

I'm looking for anyone who want's to join in and has original ideas.

And for reference I'm using the black smoke and the martians from the book and the walkers/weapons/shields from the movie.

I beg to differ, mostly because I tend to stay geared towards biological weapons myself. You have to find something that'll hurt them, then find some way to get it, then some way to prepare it, launch it, make sure they're not expecting or can't deflect, and then there's still the anti-missile weaponry either sides will undoubtly have.

And I was thinking of something to replace the martains uber shields, I thought of having them use electromagnetic shields/deflectors to deflect shell, doing this you could still pentrate the shields given your projectile has the mass or the velocity to be able to resist the electro-magnetic fields.

If you can find a rail gun, then I'll see about having a weapon that can penetrate their shields, a 120mm sabot is not going to cut the mustard in this case.

Well, maybe not at long range, but within 50m maybe (although your tank would be a hunk of melted metal by then), but I was thinking combining the ideas from the book and the movie, the book had the martian tri-pods not as tall but very manuverable(how they dodged artillery shells and what not in the book) and add some shielding from the movie to protect them from missiles and the more accurate shells.

And yeah a railgun would do the job, but only if the martian didn't dodge it(the walkers are very manuverable in the book) and you got the exact perfect angle to not be deflected a bit my the shields which would be hard if not immpossible to get from long range and trying to get close would be sucide.

And for a setting for the RP I was thinking something along this line:

One night incoming objects are detected, they are assumed to be metorites and dismissed, the landind areas or the objects are near a bunker complex housing ICBMs in the mountains in the south end of the country and near anothe ICBM complex the southern tip of the mountain range in the northwest, within a day contact is lost with both facilties and we dispatch a couple platoons to find out what's wrong, they go and are startled at what they find (the martians), they manage to send a few messages back before being wiped out.

And it goes from there.

If it can dodge something going a substantial fraction of the speed of light(generally about .3-.5c), then it doesn't need an armor or shields, it can avoid anything you can throw at it.

Yeah, your right, but I doubt purely MT railguns could reach that velocity and be able to fire repeatedly, and unless you can come up with something purely MT that could target a moving martian tri-pods at a perfect angle from over 8 miles (effective range of the martian heat-rays) away your not very likely (although it's possible) to get a hit.

And remember this is purely MT, a land based railgun that could get more then 10 shots off before the rails need replacement is immpossible, even railguns the size of yardsticks that we have now destroy them selves with one shot. Not to metion the sheer power requirements for a single one, let alone enough to make a difference.

In fact, I've lifted my new weapons for my nation (or planet) straight from this film. The V18 Tripods. They do basically the same as the ones in the film, except for the recycling of humans. I saw it today and really liked it. I'm doing some extermination threads recently, wiping out smaller species. Good fun!

They're very enviromental aliens. I got over the invincibility thing by saying that present weapons (such as guns or bombs) can't hurt them, but futuristic weapons (this is the kind of games I play) can, and the shields only act as damage limitation.
