Crisis in Africa: Fall of the Government of Obebe

http://www.freewebs.com/novgovamaps/Slide1tv.JPG

“What began as a quiet day here in the capital of Obebe turned into a raucous as rebel troops advanced on the city today, ending a three month siege between the rebels and government troops.

The government troops simply gave up the seemingly hopeless struggle, and had abandoned their posts. This surprise move by the military left the capital wide open to attack, which the rebels used to their devastating advantage. After a quiet night, they stormed into the city, catching the population off guard with unfortunate consequences. Many were simply walking to the market when rebels shot them dead in their tracks or cut them up with machetes and meat cleavers. One unfortunate mother, a British national named Lucille Housington while walking her 7 year old daughter to school, was brutally beaten, raped, and dragged down the street in front of her daughter by approximately 20 men. Her condition is unknown at this time.

The daughter was saved from danger by a kindhearted man who identified himself only as “Udwebe” who had taken the girl away to prevent the girl from befalling the same danger as her mother. She was later reunited with her father, Michael Housington, who made this heart wrenching plea for the safe return of his wife on national radio and television:”

“I can only ask for the safe return of my loving wife, who was very dear to me. She is a good person and a hope that you have some sympathy, some love in your heart to return her. Thank you.”

“Indeed, many in the international community are worried about foreign residents in Obebe. It is feared the rebels are reigniting anti-imperialist sentiment in this country that had lain dormant since the independence of the country over 40 years ago. This may have severe repercussions for the 2,000 foreigners, most of whom are white, in the country, who may get caught off guard by sudden anti-imperialist violence.

Britain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States have requested that all citizens of those countries leave Obebe immediately. The United States has threatened military action and the United Kingdom already has sent 700 Royal Marines to insure the safe return of its citizens. However, with both America and the United Kingdom tied up with the War on Terror, limited international help is arriving to assist in stabilizing the country. Indeed because of a lack of restrictions, an influx of human slaves has been seen in international markets, as well as an influx of so called “blood diamonds” in major diamond centers such as Amsterdam. While it has not been traced directly to Obebe, border traffic in Obebe has increased by 400% this last month alone.

President Bush is expected to speak on this after a summit in India. The State Department issued a statement saying that it “officially condemns the attacks on Lbansa and is disgusted by the turn of events in the country.”

Novgovan President Sterling is expected to speak on the issue during his weekly radio address on Wednesday. Meanwhile the Overseas Intelligence Bureau issued its own statement saying “there is reasonable intelligence to say that money from funds generated from the sale of diamonds and gold from Obebe is being sent to many underground international crime and terrorist organizations.” It further goes on to say that “a potential consumer of these funds may be al-Qaeda”.

Whether Novgova stays neutral in this affair is unknown, however it is expected that due to the presence of Novgovan citizens in the country of Obebe that Novgova will send at least a limited presence in the area.

I’m Ivan Obsebtrov, live from outside of Lbansa, signing off, NNN Lipany.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Secretary Bronislav, the Minister of Defense, took the remote and shut the television off. The president walked in, stirring his coffee and taking a sip, and then took a seat at his desk. It was a hot day in the capital, miserable, although in the air-conditioned room, he wouldn’t know.

“What’s on the military agenda, Mr. Bronislav?” President Sterling asked.

“I was just watching the news, President. Lbansa, the capital of Obebe, has just fallen. Terrible, too. Not a direct threat to Novgova, although there are some Novgovans in that country. Parliament has called an emergency meeting tonight to discuss the matter, although it will probably and is assumed to officially ask you to intervene in this war.”

“Well, let’s beat them to it. When can I have troops on the ground?” the President eagerly asked.

“What kind of troops? Army, Navy, Air Force?”

The President snapped. “What do you mean what kind? You know, troops! Any troops! Army, Navy, who the hell cares! Troops! I want troops there in the fastest possible time.”

“Currently, we have an OIB Task force on the ground already. They can function until the earliest force arrives.” He noticed the president’s face, which was obviously hinting that he wanted to know who and how many were going. “The Army, within a week; the Air Cavalry, in three days; and Naval Infantry, tomorrow. But it’d only be about 500, nothing special.”

“Well make ’em walk across the ocean to get there if they have to, but just get them there. Elections are coming up in October, and I need to get this over with quick and easy, by any means possible.”

“By any means possible, sir?”

“By any means possible.”

OOC: This is an open RP involving a fictional African nation called Obebe.

History: After a relative calm for about thirty years in this African country, a rather sudden revolt occurred in the northwestern provinces, being made up mostly of lumber workers and miners protesting poor working conditions. However, militant groups soon sprang up and caused havoc in the upper regions. The government, too poor to do anything much, deployed forces in piecemeal and only slowed the advance. Soon the militant groups became one large army and took over Mbanta, the second largest city, in 1999. Everything went downhill for the government before a three-month siege of the capital ended today with the mutiny of the government troops which ousted the remaining government.

Situation: Grim. 1 million, or 1 out of every 6 Obebians, are displaced from their homes and are at risk for a famine. The rebel forces have looted and plundered from already impoverished families, dragged children off to become soldiers, and murdered and raped its way to victory with an estimated 200,000 civilians dead in the process since the civil war first started in 1989.

Objective: Should you choose to accept and send forces, here are the objectives.
1. Capture or kill the despot Musako.
2. Capture infamous arms dealer and smuggler Kaduko.
3. Capture Amad Hakeem, a suspected al-Qaeda recruiter/smuggler
4. Liberate Obebe from rebels or control Obebe and stabilize the country.
5. There is some evidence that Musako has international assistance from an unknown source. Seek and destroy any international assistance to Musako.
6. (Optional) Help the local economy.

Risk: Moderately High

Allies: international militia group, ex-government forces, various Christian and Muslim militia groups (though make sure they don’t see each other otherwise you’ll have infighting)

OpFor: Rebels and government troops, militia groups, arm dealers and local mobs, unknown international military force. (Rebel and government troops and militia are armed with M16s, various AKs, G3s, and FN FALs; machetes, meat cleavers, and kitchen utensils like knives; hoes, and other agricultural equipment.)

Environment: Hot and dry (Dry season), hot and wet (Rainy Season). Country consists mostly of rainforest and jungle, with occasional rocky features. Mostly farmland and/or savannah around the capital.

Battlefield conditions: Urban street fighting within and around tenements, shacks, and flimsy market stands (Mbanta and Lbansa). Fighting in tall grass with little hidden structures due to the flatness of the ground (savannah around capital). Primarily jungle warfare with defensive installations and the occasional tunnel, however due to sogginess, tunnel networks are uncommon (Jungle throughout country).

Reward: (Should you choose to join for the reward, especially you mercenaries out there) $10 million in diamonds, $7.1 million in gold, 40% of shares in the Winston Diamond International, and any enemy slaves or goods. This reward will be presented by the new government upon returning to the capital.

Map of Obebe
http://www.freewebs.com/novgovamaps/Obebe.JPG

Lbansa- Capital of Obebe. First most populace city.

Mbanta- Second most populace city. First major city of the rebellion to fall.

Winston- Town centered around gold mining. The main gold distribution point.

Stephanie- Major trading center. Main distribution point for slaves, as well as a distribution center for opium, gold, and diamonds. On main highway and thus if captured it limits the amount of arms and men flowing into the country and the amount of illegal goods out of the country.

Dwelbi- Around coal and diamond mines. Main distribution point for diamonds.

Obanja- Major trading center. A major distribution point for diamonds. Controls the eastern rivers/swamps as well as much of the river traffic and thus if captured it limits the amount of arms and men flowing into the country and the amount of illegal goods out of the country.

Fort Christe- Former French military fort on the border with Obebe. Originally built in 1887, it was renovated in the 1920s and again in 1960 before being abandoned in 1961. Currently occupied by the homeless and refugees.

Our Lady of Faith- American mission near Winston. Most of the refuges and residents have moved NW and out of danger, though a small few remain. Currently, safe, though not for long.

St. Michael- Multinational Catholic mission North of Lbansa. In danger of advancing rebel troops. Needs help immediately to prevent a massacre.

St. Christopher- Multinational Catholic mission Northwest of Obanja. Located deep in jungle, it is primarily isolated. However, it too is in danger of rebel advances, although not immediate. Many rebel smugglers posing as refugees have used the mission as a distribution center for drugs and diamonds and thus need to be rooted out and eliminated.

Ajunga River- Primary water source of Obebe. Splits the country into half. It is the major form of transportation in the country, except for the highway.

(This took a lot of work to organize, and I'd like to know what people think of it, or join the RP.)

CIB Agent in Obebe

In the jungle, on top of a hill, a bush moved. Yet, if one was to look carefully, one would see it was not a bush but a man. A man in a ghille suit that is.

"War Room this is Fox One, come in."

There was a slight pause as he was on a satellite communications device.

"Fox One we read you."

"I have pictures. You need to see them now?"

A different man came on the communications. "This is Secreatry Bronislav, but I think you knew that. I would like to see those pictures now if you can send them."

"Yessir. I think you'll be quite surprised what me and Fox Two have found."

"Send'em over."

The CIB agent fiddled around until he found a memory card from his digital camera and inerted it in the upload device on the satellite device.

"Okay, Fox One, we have them."

"Have a nice day, sir. Fox One out."

Bronislav opened the files on the computer.

"Hmmmmm. Interesting. This can't possibly have been a rebel helicopter. But who the hell's is it?"

It was infamous arms smuggler Kaduko, a man known to have been in Somalia in 1993, and a man who supplied weapons to Osama bin Laden during his days in Sudan in the 1990s. It was only suspected Kaduko was helping out. Now there was actual proof.

"I knew it," he sighed. "This is more than just another African despot story; this is becoming an international incident. I have to warn the President right away!"

CIB Intelligence Headquarters, Lipany, Novgova.

However, the President was already arriving to his own conclusions.

"Sir I was just wondering before we begin, why do you get to call me Hack but I have to call you 'Mr. President'? What about Ken since your real name is Kenneth Sterling. I mean, you think you're so special, huh? I never should have voted for you."

"You didn't vote for me," the president said thoroughly annoyed. "I understand from your ever so kind commander that you were in prison. For cracking into classified defense systems. Twice."

"That's right, that's right."

"And if it wasn't for him, 'Hack', your sorry ass would still be in there for another twenty years." The president's mood lightened up and he grinned. "But if you don't want to be called Hack, I'm sure we could work out something for you, Private."

"No that's okay, sir," Hack said apparently disgusted by the rank.

"Okay then, 'Hack', is it? Well Hack let's change the subject. What have we got here today?"

"I think you'll find this very interesting, sir. Analyzing Obebe, one, an influx of about 8 mil pops up into a Swiss bank account, and then two, an unknown miltary group pops up."

"Can you link the money to those troops?"

"Can I prove it in court? No. But do I know us a link, yes."

"I'll buy it. We have ourselves an international incident. Andrea,"the president said turning over to his CIB liason, "What kind of information can you give me?"

"A high likelihood is that these troops are linked to ex-Russian Spetznatz Col. Gulghev, an expert in jungle warfare, and local gun-for-hire who uses political connections in Russia to achieve his goals."

"This guy's a professional. I get it."

"Sir?" Hack asked. "Satellites show a mobilization of troops marching toward the St. Michael's mission north of Lbansa, home to about 1,200 refugees and 80 foreigners. If you don't do something soon, they'll all be dead."

"I have to go consult with the Secretary of Defense, Senior General Kamov, Fleet Admiral Chodorov, Lieut. Gen. Bresnik, and Director Gustav Radjk. This is serious."

"Mud tracks, lots of them. From boots," a rebel warlord snorted.

"Refugees?" a soldier asked.

"Seems military. I advise caution. We don't know how many, but it seems like a lot. We must continue but slower."

"Musako will be furious, my lord."

"You're right. Push ahead then."

A hoard of about 5,000 milita and army personnel pushed onward toward St. Michael with 10 T-55s leading the way. How he had received T-55s is unknown, for surely the government had no money for that. But he did not question his leader, and instead sharpened his machette and cleaned his AK for the oncoming fight.

They came upon the mission and instead of finding it defenseless, found it defended by a force four times greater than his own and more advanced. Still, he gave the order to attack. After all, it was not his life he was squandering, just those of his men.

The T-55s fired into the defensive positions while the army moved in combat formation. He would send the militia in first to soften them up, and then while softened, he might hopefully cause them to retreat with the better trained army. Meanwhile mercenary snipers, which Musako had provided generously, would peg any Brydogian (Sp?) foolish enough to poke his head out.

In the evening of the day conflict started, the Conference room of the Infamous Hazard tower In the NCI capital of Ortega, Chancellor Vostok and his inner circle were discussing the conflict.

"I don't see why we should get involved in the Obebe crisis" Said Vostok. "we have nothing to do with this." His chief of foreign affairs, however begged to differ.

"Mr Chancellor." Said Chief of Foreign Affairs O'Bannion. "We have reason to believe that the rebel forces are affialated with the Al Qaeda. And as you know, the Al Qaeda have been an enemy of the Republic for several years now."

Vostok sipped some wine and leaned back in his chair. "Indeed the Al Qaeda is one of the main enemies of the Republic, but in this situation they are currently posing no threat to us." commented Vostok. "We don't need to stir up any unneeded trouble, and put the Republic at risk for a terrorist strike."

The minister of Defense leaned foward. "The Chancellor is right. It isn't a good idea to provide aid at the moment. Our military is currently undergoing major re-organization, and may not be ready for an offensive." Commented the Minister of Defence. "Unless there are Citizens of the Republic that are in Immediate danger, we should refrain from sending in forces."

"Very well" Replied the Chancellor. "We will continue to remain out of this conflict, unless there are New Crystal Isles citizens at risk in Obebe."

While the snipers played hide and seek, and losing at it, and the T-55s took the attention of the Challlenger 2 tanks, the rebel warlord ordered the milita to charge to cover as much ground as possible so the Brydog couldn't pick off most of the milita. Nonetheless, bodiless heads flew threw the air, as the Brydog's powerful rounds made short work of a lot of them. However, there were still some in range, with deadly machettes, ready to hack in close quarters combat.

The army personnel were also in range to provide cover fire, and were harder to hit because of their effective use of cover.

Meanwhile, a few rebels, mainly armed with RPG-7s, but a few armed with RPG-16s AT launchers, tried to take out the Challenger 2 tanks. One unlucky man fired his RPG-16 at a Challenger 2 tank too close, and was blown to bits.

Lbansa, Obebe

Musako sat on a throne he constructed, while his favorite wife sat on his lap, whispering and making amorous and lewd gestures. Musako like what he saw and proceeded to touch her...

"Sir, a foreign force has proceeded to block our advance north!" an aide said barging into the room.

"You insolent fool! I shall have you beaten for disturbing me!" the startled leader said.

"But sir, it is important! A force, no less than ten thousand strong, perhaps even more, has stopped our advance toward St. Michael's.. They even have tanks! Advance ones I have never heard of before!"

"Idiot, the solution is simple: Arm men with RPGs around the city. Put AT mines around the capital and roads, when the time comes to. Do not worry about them. If worse comes to worse, the tanks cannot follow us into the jungle. We use the jungle to our advantage: we lure their force into the jungle where their armored vehicles cannot follow, split up their troops, isolate them, and destroy them."

"You always were so smart, sir," the aide replied.

"I know," Masuko said while eyeing his wife. "I know."

The President stood up perfectly erect, breathed in deeply, and then exhaled, and spoke. "Thank you, Leonoid Grazni, Upper House Majority Leader."

The President and Mr. Grazni sat down and the Lower House Majority Leader,
Junior Senator Boris Iancu, stood up.

"Mr. President, as Lower House Majority Leader, I, Junior Senator Boris Iancu, of District 41, perform my duty as Lower House Majority Leader and present to you, Mr. President, the official decision that the majority of the Lower House members, my fellow peers, have created in response to the predicament of Obebe, that has resulted in us requesting your audience tonight.

We, members of the Lower House, have decided that in the interests of the Democratic Union of Novgova, and on the behalf of the Protectorates of Kublinova, Mirov, and Novarsk Island; and on the behalf of the Principality of Daca and Lebeny, we officially give our endorsement of military action in Obebe."

The President stood up perfectly erect, breathed in deeply, and then exhaled, and spoke. "Thank you, Junior Senator Boris Iancu, Lower House Majority Leader."

The President did the best he could to hide his boredom. The whole thing, in his mind, could be summed in three words: 'We support you'. But of course, the Presdient noticed, it was a strategic move. Now the conflict had the official seal of approval from the public, an insurance policy against any wrongdoing at a later time.

The Secretary caught up with the Presdient as he was leaving the Parliament Building. "Mr. President, good news. The nation of Brydog has intervened to restore the old government."

"Send my salutations to Brydog, Mr. Bronislav." the President said as he rushed to his limo.

"Sir, I have so more good news. Your 500 men have arrived on the border of Obebe and are ready to begin counter insurgency work."

"Good."

"But sir!"

"I'll talk to you tomorrow, Secretary." The President's limo rushed back to the Presidential Palace.

Ally,

To my knowledge the situation in Obebe has worsened. Also to my knowledge you, Brydog, and various other nations have sent some sort of military aid to Obebe. I have decided that I will also send aid to Obebe, let us begin the uprooting. You see I have promised to my nation that I will stamp out any terrorist threat that endangers any nation. I am sending 1000 troops to Obebe. The 1st division in our army. I also wish to set up a camp that is positioned near the Ajanga river. Please reply back if you have any comments.

Tulgary
20-07-2005, 06:12
The Tulgarian Catholicon was in every sense a world away from Obebe. Five million Tulgarians lazed about their little Apline-like landscape, swindling foreign tourists who came to gamble at the small coastline's city of casinos, munching on yoghurt and chocolate, and enjoying the other fruits of their prosperous advanced democracy, all in the shadow of Trepest's Grestovar Fortress, a last reminder of more violent times now obscured by the glint of sunbathed snowdrifts.

But the squinting eyes of the population missed an uncomfortable connection between this little Duchy and wartorn Africa, even as they peered into jewelry shop windows at the carefully presented stones there displayed. Tulgary's profitable financial institutions and accepting culture too drew her closer to the troubles as ill-got riches were laundered through the pristine, icy peaks.

Perhaps the informational haves felt a twinge of guilt as they looked from news reports and out across the sleepy street-fulls of informational have-nots in Tulgary. Archduke Felvarosh, after meeting with the current Chamber of Deputies and the heads of Royal Tulgarian Armed Forces, could be found dispatching a communiqué to the Novgovan President.

This official note conveyed Trepest's awareness of the recent interest that the honourable nation of Novgova had taken in, "the Obebe issue" and expressed the deep concern felt by the Catholicon (also known as the Grand Duchy) on behalf of the people of Obebe and of those foreigners trapped in that unfortunate place. It revealed that the little Tulgarian nation (with a population steady at five million) wished to become directly involved in the salvation of the afflicted people, and was prepared to send a Light Battalion from the 1st Brigade, "Lynxes" to act in a peacekeeping capacity and possibly even to chase-down terrorists and serious criminals, or more likely to protect displaced refugees against attack.

However, coming to the point of addressing the message to the Novgovans rather than to Obebe itself, it was the Archduke's duty to admit his nation's incapacity to carry-out intercontinental deployments. It had but four CASA C-295 transport aircraft, and would struggle to move several hundred personnel along with arms and supplies as well as perhaps light vehicles. As such, Trepest was hoping to co-operate with other civilised nations and to have its small unit partly dependent upon larger missions while freeing them from certain small defensive roles, even if they should be high-risk.

Unloading 10,000 Freedom fighter, 700 Lance tanks, 200 mobile missle lanchers, 100 warthogs, 100 black shadows, 700 AH-64 APACHE helacopters, 100 "Havoc" helacopters, 200 F-4 Phantom 2, 300 AV-8B Harrier 2s. 2 E-8 J-STARS fly over head keeping track of the enemys postion. The army sets up camp and awaits the order to move out.

OOC: Not to be a party pooper, but:

1. It is kind of pointless to have an RP if you accomplish everything in four posts! You capture Kaduko like he's some kind of idiot, when instead he's a criminal mastermind, that chances are would even evade myself, and I have a massive military. Somehow you manage to make Dwelbi your base, a major rebel stronghold, without any opposition..

2. You cannot capture Dwelbi or Kaduko since, according to the law on the forum, it is godmodding, since you didn't let me RP Kaduko's capture and the fact that you can't just barge into Dwelbi, especially since it is a strong rebel stronghold, ie, they wouldn't just role over and let you in. They'd mount a strong offensive and it'd be tough. Not to mention that Kaduko and the warlord Musako are smart people, it wouldn't be that easy to capture them or a city.

3. I don't know even where you could keep the amount of troops listed above. Obebe is a basket case economy, that's too poor to even have a runway or a military or urban center even capable of handling that many troops. Also, tanks are essentially useless in this RP. Most of the fighting will take place in the jungle, where tanks cannot operate. Aircraft will also be severely limited because there's no real military targets to hit or definable enemy area, since guerillas blend in with the populace, and dense foliage would mask any force from a patrolling plane or satellite.

I know you are new, so just to let you know, it is helpful to keep these things in mind. It can be confusing, especially attacking since you are not supposed to Rp the enemy's losses. But bear with me here. :)

OOC: Sorry dident know that u had to rp the loses. And i just carpet bomb the jungle.

OOC: I guess carpet bombing would work, although its expensive if you don't hit anything. Just make sure you don't kill civilians, too. After all, in addition to rebels there are also thousands of tiny villages in the jungle.

Also, not to be bossy or anything, but could you either retract or at least alter your story a bit so you don't start off taking the second largest city, Dwelbi? After all, it is the rebel stronghold and center of their power, adn would be harder to get to. It would even be easier taking the capital since its near savannah, and everyone could use their tanks, since the savannah's open space would allow it.

For the purpose of realism though, I'm using tanks sparingly, since they're going to be mostly useless since the fighting will mostly be close-quarters or jungle warfare.

There's also no logical way I could get the tanks (or bombers) into the country, being that I don't border it and the country has no runway long enough to support large aircraft capable of carrying tanks or bombers.

We would certainly be able to help get you to the destination by military and chartered commercial flights, but you'd have to land in a nearby African country and then march or drive or float into Obebe, for there is no suitable runway in Obebe to land on.

500 Naval Infantry arrived from across the border into Obebe. After a few hours of walking they finally reached Fort Christe, their future Field HQ.

They found a whole lot of refugees, dirty and smelly, crowding around many of the buildings.

Their contact, a white-haired Obebian government officer, former government officer tat is, stepped foward. He was not necessarily the best-looking man, with tattered clothing and horrible teeth, but com[ared with many others in the compound, he must have been a stud.

"Nice to meet you," he said holding out his hand to a soldier. "I am Usoko."

The commanding officer of the Naval infantry detachment stepped foward.

"I am Major Okbrovich, commander of the Novgovan forces here," the Major stated. "If there is any comments or information to pass, I am the man to do so."

The Obebian turned away from the soldier and toward the officer. "Welcome sir, to Obebe. Not the prettiest sight to behold, I know, but this is my home."

A street market vendor tried to offer the men "fresh meat", or at least the freshest he had, since it the best pice of meat was crawling with maggots. The other pieces were indescribably disgusting.

A helicopter, a Mi-24 Hind-D to be exact, passed over the compound and then came back, hovering over the main courtyard. The street vendor quickly ran for his life from the demonic contraption as well as many of the refugees. The pilot, had no trouble finding a spot to land, save for where the infantry were standing and quickly brought the helicopter down safely. When the pilot got out he instantly noticed the hoard of refugees, most of whom never saw a helicopter, huddling along the mudbrick walls, cluching little ones and personnel belongings tightly, observing the newcomers with apprehension.

"Sir? Major? Sorry to interupt. Your radio equipment is here, as well as some engineering equipment. We need to build a heliport, if not an runway, if I'm not mistaken. That's what I was told. By the end of the week, sir, we need to make accomedations for at least one other helicopter besides our own."

"I know perfectly well, the briefing, after all I'm one of the ones who approved it," the Major replied. "I know you had some engineering experience, Lieutenant, and I think a few others here. We'll go up in the chopper and evaluate a good area to start a base construction site. Hopefully, maybe some other nations will help us. If not, we could always recruit the refugees to help."

"Sir, off the record, do you think this mission will even result in anything? I mean, how serious is this thing?" the pilot replied.

"Lieutenant, I don't know. But I do know they are sending 5,000 Naval Infantry over, and another 2 or 3 thousand Air Cav. It's a big country, we need the men. This seems to be a true insurgency, with massive support from the local populace, and various international crime and terrorist organizations.

Although it doesn't seem likely we'll fight with al-Qaeda, the supposed main consumer of the money from the gold and diamonds and drugs, we're definately ticking them off by cutting their supply off. So we must be prepared for anything. But listen, I'm not supposed to tell you that. I can't get into details. It's classified. Now, are you gonna get me up in the air or not?"

"Yessir, right away sir," the pilot said as he skipped back to the helicopter to ready it for another flight.

(OOC: Damn forum killing off my original rp. Oh well, I had a couple of mistakes in it anyway.)

The carrier Raymond III came to a stop near the coast of Africa in which Obebe was closest to(since I have no idea where it is). In no time at all the carrier is swarming with troops moving to their rightful Blackhawk. The blackhawks had their destinations. Just before the blackhawks had taken off, four JAS 39's and Two F-16's had left the carrier, and headed towards St. Michaels.

The commanding officer Joseph Costan was most certain that this operation wouldn't fail. He had ordered for the blackhawks to go to the Novgovians location, and group up with them. Costan also had radioed in prior to a neighboring country to Obebe, and asked for permission to refuel. He wanted Head Captain Craig Saunders to meet up with the Novgovian command, and possibly form a plan.

Meanwhile the JAS 39s and F-16s were off towards their destination. Their orders were clear, make the rebels scatter out of the jungle so that the Brydogs could get a clear shot on them. And hopefully clear up the jungle so that there were better shots inside of it. Costan realized that he was taking a major risk doing this, but he authorized it anyway. Once the group of fighters reached the jungle outside of St. Michaels, the fighters moved into position. Regular bombing runs would be a lot safer than carpetbombing, although carpetbombing is a lot funner. The satisifaction level of this mission had no importance.

The fighters started to unleash hell upon the rebels inside of the jungle. The jungle seemed to open up more for the Brydogs. If any damage had been done at all, no one knew beside the rebels. But now the jungle was more open, and a lot easier to hit targets. The group of fighters headed back to the carrier.

Back to the Blackhawks, after refueling in a nearby African country, the blackhawks continued to trek on towards the Novgovians. The Blackbirds escorting them the rest of the way. Some time passed, and the blackhawks finally reached their destination at Fort Christie. The blackhawks released their cargo, and the troops moved towards the Novgovans. Head Captain Saunders just was now in charge of making a plan with the Novgovians. He moved towards the gates of Fort Christie, while the rest of the 1000 troops stood in place on stand by.

(OOC: I hope this is good enough there, Novgova.)

Acting on the advice of the Novgovan MoD, the Tulgarians decided to deploy a limited force close to Obebe and the move a short distance across the border to Fort Christe, since its relative accessability appealed to the small nation and talk of refugees made it seem like perhaps they could do some good. While most personnel, it was eventually decided, would fly in by charter, supplies were brought by all four of the Catholicon's CASA C-295 transport aircraft, which had to hop from accepting nation to nation, stopping several times en route.

In the end, some 150 Royal Tulgarian Army personnel from the 1st Mechanised Infantry Brigade ("Lynx") and of attached humanitarian units crossed the border into troubled Obebe, moving down the Ajunga by use of, "flatpack" and inflatable rafts and light boats. They were identified by large yellow-over-red Catholicon flags.

Lieutenant Colonel Benedik commanded the little mission, which included fifty infantry soldiers armed primarily with the Automatic Infantry Fuzil Fashion G41, that being the Tulgarian designation for the H&K G41, accepted by the little Tulgarian army before it was realised that nobody else would select it and drive down the price. The Tulgarians also brought a quartet of their new 4x4 LUMVs (Light Utility Military Vehicles).

Benedik's men were rather surprised to see such a concentration of multi-national military force already assembled when their little contribution arrived at Fort Christe, and the Lt.Colonel was inclined to defer to the authority of those he hoped would be his allies throughout the operation. The Tulgarians made it quickly apparent that they were prepared to stay and defend the fort community and to contribute to humanitarian concerns there, but that the mechanised infantry units were also prepared for more aggressive operation if it would be required of them.

(OOC: I don't know if the position is ever going to come under threat, or -given the slightly surprising expenditure other nations are applying to the situation- if there's much scope for the rebels to ever do much of anything, but if the multi-national operation needs a disaster besides that of arguably wasting money and probably killing a lot of innocent people, the tiny Tulgarian force is apt to bite off more than it can chew, for the record :) )

"Shut up, little man. I know what I'm doing." the man fired off a few more rounds, until he saw three of his comrades get gunned down in the street.

Apparently, the freedom fighters were going from house to house searching for rebels.

"We have to get out of here!" His partner yelled. Just then a stray bullet hit the gunman's partner, ending his life so suddenly that it froze the gunman where he was. The Novgovan Hind helicopter snaked through rows of trees, looking to evaluate a perfect space of land.

"There's a nice spot, if it wasn't covered by so many damn trees," the pilot said to the Major.

"What about 500m to the north, it looks like there are less trees."

The helicopter flew to the north when a white whisp went right past the helicopter. it was the trail of an RPG, which had narrowly missed the helicotper.

"We're being shot at!" the Major said as the helicotper veered and took evasive measures.

The major looked through his window and saw the RPGer running through the jungle. The major opened the passenger door and took out his AK-74M and fored at the RPGer. Despite the trail or bullets, the nimble runner junped and sprinted seemingly invincible into the jungle.

"Bastard!" the major yelled. "We need to start patrols. And I want them out starting tommorrow. Take us back to the compound."

The helicopter headed back and landed in the courtyard. There, he saw rows and rows of foreign tents.

"Who the hell are they?" the Major yelled.

A captain who was left in charge came running foward. "They have come to help."

The Major took out the satellite phone. "Mr. Bronislav, Who the hell are they? We don't need them! Novgova could do this ourselves!"

"You are mistaken, Major. We do need them. Without them, there can be no peace. Did you know that Daleburgtopian troops have died in their struggle to capture Dwelbi, one of the most important centers that needed to be taken? Now that is taken, we expect illegal diamond distribution has been reduced by about 50%. They've done more than you did so far, so dont knock them."

"Yessir," the Major replied trying to hide his anger.

"Now, not only do we want you to cooperate with the troops of the foreign countries, including Raymuna and Tulgary, but we want you to be nice to them, which I know is a lot to ask of you, especially since you have an infamous reputation for your attitude against foreigners, part of the reason you are not a Colonel, Major."

"Yes sir," the Major replied sullenly.

"Now, you'll have an extra 1,000 Naval infantry coming very soon. The Air Cav will try to join Daleburgtopian troops when they arrive. Understood?"

"Understood."

"Good," Mr. Bronislav replied. "Now, get to work. You need to build an airfield, correct?"

Back in the Tulgarian Catholicon, while the rich and the shady clucked tongues in private lament at the decline in the most profitable sort of diamond trade through which they'd long and somewhat immorally prospered, others raised eyebrows at the raising of Daleburgetopian banners over Obebe. This was starting to look like imperialism, and nobody saw why Tulgary should lose-out by the end to diamond smuggling while others looked to have every intent of prospering by replacing it with subjugation. The Tulgarian embassies to Daleburgetopia and Novgova conveyed their concern that if mistakes were made, it could very well look to the world's public as if the liberators were in fact likely to turn opportunist, and that it would not reflect well upon administrations if the people of Obebe did not end up free and masters of their own independent affairs.
Perhaps it was an over-reaction, but this was the impression that the hasty raising of Daleburgetopian flags left upon many sensitive Tulgarians.

Lieutenant Colonel Benedik meanwhile was much too concerned with the tactical situation as his infantry began aggressive forward patrols around the perimiter of Fort Christe, the small Catholicon's military relying on superior one-on-one skill rather than sheer firepower to protect its positions. Small squads with H&K G41 rifles and Ultimax-100 Mk.3 light machineguns crept back and forth through the under-developed state's natural cover while others established machinegun nests and light mortar pits or took-up Parker-Hale M.85 sniper-rifles and watched from within the fort community and the hundred other staff worked to sustain them and the many refugees on hand, cooking thick Tulgarian stews for as many mouths and bellies as they could.

Captain Craig Saunders had just seen that the Major of the Novgovian troops had just ended his conversation with a higher rank. The Major seemed to be pissed off. But in a time like this Saunders didn't rightly care. He moved over to the moody Major(lol), and saluted him. Which at first he thought he shouldn't do, but did anyway. The Major hesitantly gave a salute back, and then they briskly shook hands. Now was the time to formulate a plan.

Saunders spoke up first, "Major, I'm glad to be here. But as you can see the rebels are all over the place. And judging from your near-death situation that happened earlier, I don't think they're going to wait much longer for a plan. I certainly hope you plan on creating a defensive perimeter around here. If you already have, I will happily donate men to the cause. Now lets get down to the brass and tacks of this situation. We have an undetermined number of rebels in each major or minor city of this country. And we definitely need to figure out a plan to get rid of such infidels. OOC: Note that there is no direct water route to Obanja, so I'm assuming you are going up the Ajunga River, which is pretty far from your location. Be aware then, that the river is guarded by patrols of rebels either on boats or the riverbank. Also note that by going up the river, you lose the element of surprise and they will be prepared for you.

Personally though, if continuing, I'd rely on infantry not tanks since the tanks cannot operate around jungle and in close quarters combat, they tend to lose any advantage and become easy prey.

So do you have any ideas at all to get started with this Operation?"

"There is a plan, but not enough men to execute. Tulgary, has fortunately provided men for humanitarian and patrols, so that frees up my men to create an air strip to land supplies. Once done, we can utilize the airfield as a base to jump off and attack.

Intelligence notes that Mbanta is the strongest rebel city, and is going to be the hardest city, because almost the whole population of the city is hostile. There is much former Soviet equipment, provided by an unknown force, presumably international criminal organizations, though it looks like it could even be from a government. Some of this stuff is pretty advanced; their AA systems especially.

The capital is, despite what you may think, not that all defended. There is a considerable less amount of enemy troops, and many of these are busy policing the populace. However, as with all of these cities, they are essentially worthless. Why? Becuase, what do you capture when you capture a city here? Nothing. A barn, a house, and a telephone poll, if you're lucky. the country's dirt poor, and nothing in the cities are of any value.

Even if we capture all the cities, it will not stop illegal exportation of diamonds and gold, it will not stop the rebels, and it will certainly not stop the fighting. This is a rural county, that is, most of the people do not live in the cities, but rather on farms, or in little villages, many of which are located deep in jungle.

Thus, this is going to be a brutal campaign which apparently the politicans don't get. The general populace expects a quick war, we capture the capital, everyone goes home happy. But, as soldiers, you and I know that it is not a fairy tale, or somthing you see on tv. If we capture the capital, or a diamond distribution center, it doesn't matter much, it'll reduce the diamond smuggling, for a while, and then they'll find a different spot and it'll start all over again.

As we have learned from the Americans in Vietnam, the key here lies not with the cities but with the land. Patrol the rivers and you can cut eliminate illegal traffic. Divide the forest into sectors and then patrol accordingly. When you eliminate the enemy presence in a sector, leave troops behind to make sure the rebels don't move back in. Capturing a city on a major road cuts illegal traffic slightly, but patroling the road eliminates it.

Now, Novgova, with a 3.7 billion population, could more than take care of this mess, so I'm going to be honest with you Lt. Colonel, that I don't feel it is necessary for you to be here. So sorry if I ever get moody at you. However, the government decided that it is better to go in as a coalition, so that it doesn't look like an imperialism campaign. And, although you'll never hear this from me again, I am glad to have your help and others, which has proven invaluble.Without Tulgarian and Raymunian troops, I'd be in a bit of a thick spot right now if it wasn't for you all. So, I'll say thanks, but don't ever think you are going to hear that from me again, either."

Saunders smirked, then nodded simutaneously. "Alright. Since the rivers seem to be much of an importance, I'll make sure that there are constant patrols on them. It's going to be a mess, but it needs to be done. As for the air strip, it's an excellent idea. It would definitely be easier to transport troops from point A to B."

Just as Saunders finishes his sentence a private runs up to him, and yells out, "SIR!"

Saunders turns his head, and sees the private saluting him. Saunders returns the Salute, "What do you need, Private?"

The private gasps for air, "Sir, intel just got word that we have 500 troops coming to help us out, that is Raymunan troops."

Saunders smiles, and nods at this. "That's good news, now get back to intel, private! And another thing, don't have them come until we get this airstrip built here. Then we can send them by an actual transport plane."

The private salutes once more, and dashes for the intelligence tent. Saunders turns around, and sighs. "Looks like we have some more men to work with. Now how big of a population does Obebe have?"

"Obebe has a population of about 8 million, plus two million as refugees in other countries. Only two of those eight live in cities, the rest live off the land in villages and tiny hamlets." The Major added," But we don't know the exact population because a census hasn't been taken in years. All we can do is guess. In a matter of fact, Fort Christe isn't even in official Obebian territory. We are about 10 miles north of the border. But the borders are unpatrolled and open, and thus many Obebians live outside the borders."

Sasuko, the local warlord, awoke from his bed. He jumped out of is bed and grabbed his G3 rifle and ran to the fighting in ceremonial dress. The gaudy outfit made him easy to hit and thus two bullets pegged him in the chest and he collapsed in a pool of blood. The rebels were taken completely off guard. The militia used the usual wave tactics, sending waves of men in with and assortment of weapons, usually AKs or G3s, but also machettes and cleavers, with the usual casualties.

However, two events made this battle for Obanja an ominous sign of things to come: child soldiers and elite ex-Russian troops.

Child soldiers, some as young as seven, took part in the battle, firing AKs wildly at the invaders. Though there weren't many here, there certainly would be in later battles. Elite Russian soldiers who happened to be in the town, also joined the fight and unlike their militia counterparts, used expert urban tactics, utilized cover as much as possible, and were skilled in the expert art of throwing grenades, bouncing them off of walls, roofs, ground or anything to hit their target.

They were part of a patrol-turned-gun-for-hire force made up of about 50 soldiers under the command of a Colonel Gulghev, an ex-Russian Spetznatz who had spent years in Africa, in places such as Angola and Libya and was well versed in African warfare. His men, though not in a direct combat role, were to train a new army, as well as police distribution centers and arms depots, such as Obanja.

10 Russians, who were trainers, as well as about 100 well trained men, attacked in force, and was supported by 1000 rebel milita in additon to the 200 local militia. This force is the strongest force thus far in Obebe since the attack on Brydog earlier in the week.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elsewhere, the first military attack on Fort Christe occured at the sme time Obanja was attacked.

It was night, about 1AM, when the first mortar rounds were fired at the Fort Christe compound, hitting the tentgrounds, and the unfinished airstrip. Various guerilla forces launched RPGs and heavy machine gun fire at ForT Chirste. The dirtwalls shook and in some places crumbled, and the shock waves from the attack knocked many out of their beds. Mortar shells plunged into where the refugees slept, causing limbs and organs to fly into the air, terrorising those that weren't hit. However, all of a sudden it stopped as the guerilla forces retreated into the jungle to avoid retaliation.

Tulgary

Fort Christe
The Tulgarians had kept-up their patrols into the night, but their numbers -with just fifty front-line infantry and one hundred other personnel- were too few for it to be an air-tight operation. That they were so newly arrived and inexperienced in the terrain didn't help, and though they'd begun to try cutting-back the vegetation beyond the defensive walls, the job was far from complete. A fireteam on patrol, picking through it all and as yet under the impression that rebel forces were far from this heavily militarised area outside Obebe's official borders and selected by refugees, saw its members discussing a half-baked plan to gather volunteers from the local population to help them clear the vegetation in the morning, so that nobody would be able to sneak up if things did heat up.

The team's leader hadn't even seriously begun to worry about shutting his men up when they heard mortar bombs whistling overhead, and snapped with hardly an expletive into combat mode. The team, along with a second one a few hundred yards away, began to press quickly into the surrounding jungle, well aware that their comrades defending the fort from within could not possibly know from where exactly the fire was originating.

The appearance of RPGs and machineguns opened-up a direct-fire engagement that the Tulgarians on and within the walls could finally get to grips with, and their expensive training and night-vision equipment saw them efficiently felling a number of rebel fighters in a few seconds of contact.
Further inside, Tulgarian medics and others tried to contain panic as hundreds of people virtually became a stampede when a mortar round exploded amongst them, but they would soon find themselves dealing with crush injuries as well as the effects of explosive blasts and, of course, shock.
By the time the rebels began to withdraw, eight Tulgarian patrol members were behind their most forward fighters, though still short of the mortars, and found little difficulty in picking off a good number of men trying to lug heavy-machineguns through the jungle quickly enough to keep up with fleeing comrades.

Still, the rebels spent little enough time firing that their mortars were able to escape before the patrols could find them out and designate their own mortars to retaliate, and at least one of the few Tulgarians on hand was wounded in the attack: a Lieutenant dazed by a mortar blast and then swept up by a panicked crowd. Civilian casualties in the areas attended by Tulgarians wouldn't be immediately known.

Lipany, Novgova

It was night time in the capital, Lipany. In the Presdiential Palace, President Sterling was sleeping soundly when the phone rang. The phone woke up his wife who answered the phone.

"Hello?" she asked.

"Hello Cheryl," the voice responded.

"Who is this?"

"This is Secretary Bronislav. Can you put your husband on the line?"

Cheryl went to wake up his husband, but her husband was already awake and took the phone. "This is President Sterling."

"We have a situation. As you know, countries have ordered the evacuations of citizens. However, a rebel group has prevented about 100 persons from leaving, and we are afraid they are going to turn them over to Musako. Two of the prisoners are Novgovan journalists. It is going to be tricky to dodge this bullet. I'm afraid our only means of extraction is by using force."

"Do it, then."

"I'm afraid it isn't so simple, commander. Going by land is suicidal; we don't have the forces to do that, not without help. Going by air runs the risk of RPG attacks. Sending in an army won't solve the problem either as the hostages will probably be shot before we get there."

"How do we do it then?"

"I don't know. We can formulate a plan with the allies."

"Do it."

"Yes sir," Bronislav said as he hung up the phone.

This is presadent Avondale of Daleburegtopia, We are prepared to asist you in axtracting the hostages. We can send our best DIA agent. Should we proced?

Major Okbrovich, the leading Novgovan commander, decided to answer the call, which was fowarded by the Secretary. The Secretary, being a civilian, had decided to let the Major be an advisor to the mission.

"Mr. President, we welcome any help. I feel I should let you in on the plan that Novgovan intelligence has provided me, and to the other allies. The place where the foreigners are held is a tenement building in the Western area of Mbanta, the capital. The foreigners aren't being held by the dictator Musako directly, but a regional warlord who, being at odds with Musako, wants to get on his good side by transfering the foreigners to him.

If the warlord accomplishes the mission, Musako will do one of two things: kill the hostages, or use them as bargaining pieces. Once he has control of the hostages he is likely to spread the hostages out and hide them in heavily guarded areas, thus making it impossible for them to make it out alive.

Which is why we have formulated a plan. Helicopters are too easy to shoot down, and an overt attack will probably result in them killing the hostages. Our OIB (OOC: Overseas Intelligence Bureau) has sent men to infiltrate the city and have rented trucks capable of transporting the hostages. The trucks will park outside the aprtment complex, and at night, OIB and special forces will barge into the building, rescue the hostages, the rendezvous outside the city for helicopter extraction.

If there are any questions or comments, or better ideas, from anyone, we welcome them."

Fort Christe

Major Okbrovich was happy to hear the Tulgarians were okay, and no news from the Raymunians meant( I guess) that no news is good news.

However, it wasn't quite happy for him. The first Novgovan casualty of the war, a private, was handing out chocolate bars and candy to children when a mortar shell exploded nearby. Most of the children, except for two, were spared but nearby parents were maimed or killed from shrapnel and the concussion. The private himself died when a dime sized piece of metal had penetrated the private's skull. Another private, who was also handing out chocolate, was injuried but only slightly.

In the morning, the Hind flew the body to an airport in the nearby countries, to be flown back to Novgova. The Hind returned just before noon, just in time for the Major to take a ride to the nearest British base on the river not too far from Fort Christe.

His helicopter landed about 15 minutes later in a town named 'Grubao' by the villagers. He casually walked through the town, being greeted by British sentries. Overhead, a sign read 'Fort Hell'.

Apparently the Royal Marines redecorated.

The Major shook hands with the British commander, also a Major. They discussed the war for a bit, had a lunchtime meal, and then casually walked to the river, which the Royal Marines deligently patroled. One boat after another, mostly semi-rigid inflatable boats, passed by carrying Royal Marines. Then the Major retreated to his helcopter which took him away, maing the day an uneventful day. The only bright spot came when 500 Naval Infantry reinforcements arrived at the already overcrowded Fort Christe. At least they were able to build the airstrip a lot quicker now, and once able to, Fort Christe would be easy to resupply.
