A Letter From His Majesty, King Aleksander’s Diplomat, Cestmir Aleksic-
Belgrade,
October 1st, 1901
Your Majesty,
It is with some regret I write to you with the details of my recent fact finding, particularly regarding the oppression of the Slavic majorities in the regions of Macedonia and Bulgaria (our mutual concern resting largely with the ethnic Serbs above others, I am sure) by the Ottoman Turks. Following our own bid for independence, largely perpetuated by the efforts of your more notable relatives (and admittedly their crude counterparts of the Karageorgevic family, though I cannot readily decide if their contributions were more a hindrance than a help), I would suspect that, as a decidedly patriotic Serbian with the same hatred for the Turks I know many of us find difficult to hide, your sympathies would tend to extend to your fellow Slavs fighting against the Sultan’s oppression of Christians. The brutality appears to be a decidedly ethnic and religious affair, despite denials of the Sultan that his actions are motivated solely by a desire for order, and thus I must stress to you the moral obligations that we are being presented with these developments. While these obligations may be somewhat weaker with regard to other ethnic Bulgarians and Greeks in the region, if we are to consider the wellbeing of any group, we must at least consider the Serbs.
As you know, there exist sizeable Serbian Krajine within the Macedonian region, and though the Macedonian national fronts proclaim their dedication to a complete and free Macedonia, I am unsure of whether it would be a wise choice to entrust the fate of our blood brothers to those who do not share our ethnic background. It is therefore my suggestion that we, as a sovereign and sympathetic state with reasonable military powers and a sizeable munitions surplus, take measures to ensure our brothers will find protection should the Ottoman backlash be directed at them, and should the Macedonian resistance fail to protect and arm them sufficiently. It is, after all, our patriotic and national duty to promote the wellbeing of fellow Serbs whether they reside within the borders of mother Serbia or not, for as I mention, we know far too well the suffering and repression that comes with Ottoman territorial government, and, likewise, in contrast we recognize the sweet taste of freedom and self governance in a land we can call our own. Should the Macedonian region free itself from Ottoman grip, and particularly should the Serbs dwelling there find freedom, a great blow would strike the Ottoman Empire, and it would bring us one step closer to the realization of our grand dream: forcing the Ottomans from the Balkans completely thus paving the way for a pan-Slavic federation.
Your Humble Servant,
Cestmir Aleksic
