A Kriegos Collective Oligarchy :: A breakdown of Kriegorgrad

The format is taken from Hogsweat’s own excellent commentary on his “Motherlandism”, while I doubt I can match the originality or the quality of his own talk on his form of government, I’ll certainly try and keep you entertained or at least interested for the duration of you reading this.

By the way people, please comment on what I could improve or what you like - I need feedback!

INTRODUCTION
The Collective Oligarchy is built upon the shaky pillars of fear, hatred and love, fear of what the government describes as the “evil foreigners”, hatred of traitors and other enemies of the state and love of the glorious, eternally right, kind, merciful and all round perfect god Comrade Leader Nikolai Fedorenkov. While Kriegorgrad appears to the outside world as an autocracy headed by the aforementioned Comrade Leader, what goes on behind the scenes tells us of the contrary. Nikolai Fedorenkov, like many a political figurehead, it nothing more than a puppet, a man who once had a noble dream of ushering Kriegorgrad out of an age of poverty and destitution into an era of peace, tranquillity and equality for all people. But it wasn’t meant to be, hence the unfortunate state of the nation now. Along the ascension to leadership during the “communist revolution”, Nikolai was tempted by the seductive allure of power and leadership, it was these vices that ultimately led to the strings being attached to Nikolai, the Oligarchs, as Nikolai and the inner party knows them as, are the ones who Nikolai dealt with to get what was going to be his authoritative reign. Despite his excellent populist tactics, Fedorenkov was in too deep to back out of the deals he’d made with the true rulers of Kriegorgrad during the revolution and thus, Nikolai is now nothing more than a marionette, moving and talking as the tugged strings leading to the oligarchs demand.

As mentioned earlier, the people of Kriegorgrad are kept in a state of perpetual fear of the outside while being kept blind to what they actually fear. The impoverished state claims that the people of Kriegorgrad have the best lifestyle in the world through endless propaganda, and due to the relatively isolationist society in which no foreign influences are tolerated; the people fall for it hook-line-and-sinker. Kriegorgrad is also an extremely old fashioned state but also alarmingly dictatorial in its morals, sex before “marriage” (discussed later) is punishable by public execution for “decay of moral standards”, homosexuality is outlawed, what is seen as a perfectly natural thing by many nations is both feared and reviled by the paranoid populace of Kriegorgrad. All “deviants” are executed publicly, often via rifle squad as the people cheer, minds addled by years of imbued propaganda.

The moral standards of Kriegorgrad are, rather than the communistic state it tries to mimic, far more akin to the regime of German National Socialism than anything else; as you may have gathered. However, unlike Nazi Germany, Kriegorgrad doesn’t enforce racial discrimination, this tolerance because it believes in race equality but because the minority of non-caucasians are just as useful in the military as the Caucasians. The totalitarian regime needs children to fuel its huge and inefficient war machine, hence the anti-homosexual stance of Kriegorgrad. Sixty year old weaponry is the norm for the Proletarian Guardsmen, whom number over fifty million fighting men, the repercussions from this giant but growing army can be told throughout the country, cheap pillars of grey that pass as flats are marred with the black stains of pollution dot the overcrowded cities. Speaker towers and public telescreens blaring out an endless fusillade of propaganda, most of the lies and deceptions encourage adults and children alike to sign up for the Proletarian Guard – or in children’s case, the Youth Guard; the boy soldiers of Kriegorgrad.

Kriegos Collective Oligarchy Judicial System

When the judicial system of Kriegorgrad is even applied, it knows no mercy but this is largely irrelevant as most subversives are simply dragged from their homes in the dead of night or dragged from the streets in broad daylight – COMSEC (Collective Oligarchy Mass Security; read Gestapo) has no shame with what it does. The organisation is highly motivated and sincerely believes that it is safeguarding the people of Kriegorgrad, not caring about the fear and terror they inspire in the people of the Collective Oligarchy. However, the times when the judicial system is used, the following offences are the most grievous, with one being the highest and two being lower than one, three being lower than two ect. ect.
1.) Enemy of the state
2.) Being classed as a deviant
3.) Disobeying COMSEC orders
4.) Defiling state property
5.) Dealing in contraband

Kriegos Collective Oligarchy Economy

As the former word in Collective Oligarchy states, the economy is planned but not in the conventional way. Where most nations panic when their economy takes a dive, Kriegorgrad revels in it, poverty is one of the prerequisites to Kriegorgrad’s method of dictatorship and uses the idea that if people are too poor to eat, they’re too poor to think about the system pulling the strings above them. The military has a large hand in the almost regular dips into poverty and starvation, the mammoth war machine is designed to drive the economy into the ground as often as it can. With over fifty-percent of the economy geared towards the military in industries such as ship building, tank manufacture and munitions, agriculture is sorely lacking. People regularly starve and die due to the weak amount of farming in the nation, those not engaged in direct military occupations are often shoved into the secondary military industries, such as mining and other ways of procuring raw materials.

The economy is poor but the people themselves don’t know it, while living a life of misery, they are still led to believe they’re better off than the rest of the world, so they are, for the most part, content with their meagre lot. The fact that, whenever a certain part of the economy fails and falls short of the intended quota, all the government needs to do is start spouting false statistics and the people are satisfied, due to the endless indoctrination pounded into their heads from an early age. The saying “whoever discovered water wasn’t a fish” holds true for Kriegorgrad, one could easily change a few words about and the saying is essentially the epitome of Kriegorgrad.

“Whoever discovered poverty wasn’t Kriegos.”

Kriegos Collective Oligarchy Health and Education

Kriegorgrad’s health system is hopelessly defunct, second-rate medicines are dished out and doctors with no real knowledge are posted in the primarily proletarian areas of the cities. Education, however, is quite a different matter, the media is extremely streamlined, to the point where Goebbels himself would’ve wept in envy should he have been alive to witness the system in action. Children are taught to love and worship Comrade Leader Nikolai Fedorenkov from as early an age as possible while being geared for the state of perpetual war-readiness, boys as young as eight being drafted into the Youth Guard isn’t something unheard of. Children and adults alike are taught to love their family fiercely while simultaneously being taught that Comrade Leader Nikolai Fedorenkov is the only one who can protect them, thus interlinking “God” and family.

Kriegos Collective Oligarchy Religion

Kriegorgrad is a controversial state when it comes to religion, with Comrade Leader Nikolai Fedorenkov proclaiming himself deity of the nation and the mentioned interlinking of “God” and family, the Comrade has a fairly sturdy throne upon which the puppeteers can manipulate him with extravagant ease. There is even a military cult dedicated to the worship of the Comrade Leader, known as Ordos Fedor, these highly motivated wing of the military is equipped with bleeding edge technology but these soldiers are rarely used as it conflicts with the overall ethos of Kriegorgrad’s system.

With Kriegorgrad being ruled by a living breathing “god”, morale is unusually high in wartime as the Kriegos people believe that with Nikolai on their side, they can’t possibly lose. This also helps reduce the need for conscription as people sign up in droves from the military when in wartime, sure in the idea that their god won’t let anything undesirable happen to them in the bloody battles the Kriegos military loves to drag out over the longest possible period. Casualties are a good thing for Kriegorgrad, as it can help rouse ideas of vengeance. The people of Kriegorgrad feel anger for those who die on distant battlefields but also feel sure in the belief that Nikolai Fedorenkov will protect them, the idea that Nikolai Fedorenkov won’t save you on the field is only one piece of rationality discarded by the Kriegos public.

Overview

Kriegorgrad is an extraordinarily defunct state, the system is geared for inefficiency and the fact that starvation is rampant tells us that most of the country is bordering on third world poverty, the only presentable population centres are the pre-revolution towns that dot the countryside. The pleasant little hamlets and villages are slowly being wiped out though, the country folk being relocated to the dirty cities in which rats infest the gutters. Poverty thrives in the overcrowded cities while people pray to Nikolai Fedorenkov, all under the ever-watchful eye of COMSEC and the telescreens that are put both in the public and the homes of the people.

The grossly huge military strains the economy beyond breaking point, with over one-hundred million people in the Proletarian Fleet and the Proletarian Guard alone, precise numbers cannot be given due to the ineptitude of the administration of the military. Kriegos diplomacy is often hostile and impolite. Kriegorgrad is a state to keep a wary eye on.

It's good and swell to read, but I have some comments. First off, being a 1984 state is fun to be, albeit in your own way. However, when I read this and I have read 1984 too, it's like your nation is an exact copy of it. I always pictured your nation as, in the lines of 1984 but with differences. Guess I was wrong there... Anyway the rest, the inefficiency, the lack of healthcare and all are just plain groovy.

Thanks Aust, I'd like people to see this as I feel there must be alot of holes in my RP in regards to describing Kriegorgrad's government.

A+ Krieg, not too shabby at all!!! Blood died huh? Shame, that was going to be good.

Not exactly Aust, 1984 is the template I based my nation off, though.

Thanks Layarteb, it was a good RP, it just didn't hold out - I might do a refined version with less RPers sometime.

Corporal Delaney and his Lee-Enfield Mk 3 will be there with psychosis, a thrist for death, and a heartless body to reek his havoc upon the existence of those who threaten he.

AH! It all makes sense now, I had a fairly good idea but I'm all the better for seeing it spelt out. One thing though, these oligarchs... who are they and what do they do with their power?

Crazy Delaney...

Well Tom, the Oligarchs, you can see them in a few threads, bickering among one another and all like children. However, considering Kriegorgrad's less than normal rationale, I can't guarantee the Oligarchs will do anything useful or logical with the massive power they wield within the Collective Oligarchy. The Oligarchs are essentially just the ruling elite, fully aware that the state perpetuates lies but caring not about it.

Hmmm...

A good all round fact book Krieg, I like the fact that there is a lot of obvious weakness in there as well as strengths allowing for a lot of character in RP rather than just merely generic perfect nations.

I look forward to RPing with you again sometime.

Thank god someone interepted it the way I wanted, I find weaknesses make for far more interesting RP than strengths, quirks add to the feel (like your submersible navy). Character RP is better in the slums of cheap habs than communist states that are somehow amazingly rich.

And in regards to your last sentence, the feeling is mutual.
