Natural Selection Bill hotly debated in parliament

The Natural Selection or NATSEL bill is being hotly debated in Parliament and analysts believe it to be very close margined. The bill will drop all support for babies born with birth defects. Any current people with birth defects will lose support. However, anyone who acquired a disability during their life will continue to receive support. In addition, fetuses can only be born in the third trimester. All others will be terminated in the safest way possible.

NATSEL is aimed to reduce birth defects and complications so that humans are able to comfortably exist and won't be clinging to life because they were born that way. About half of Parliament supports it, while half dissents. Chancellor Ngu Phuok Dinh has stated that he hopes the bill will not pass, but will not veto it if it does. He suggested several changes including allowing babies that are blind and deaf to remain alive.

Protesters have begun to gather in Nemnenait Square and in front of the Parliament building. No arrests have been reported. The world watches as a very important bill may be put into law.

OOC: Respond in at least a few sentences please, or don't respond at all. What would you do if this were being debated in Congress, or PArliament, or whatever your (RL) country has.

We would hope that this bill would only target those born with genetic conditions, rather than any children who suffer as a result of birth complications or pre-natel abuse. Any who are still capable of living/being productive, should be allowed to receive support provided they agree to be stareilized(sp).

You should consider the aspect of what type of condition they have, and whether to terminate the pregnancy of a genetically defective child on the basis of quality of life.

- Will their condition limit their qualitiy of life, life span, or their capability of independence once matured? (18 years, in my book of law)

- What is the risk of their genetic defect being passed on if they have children?

With the advances in medical technology, soon treating the defect may be possible while still in the womb. If this law passes, you should leave the door open for those future treatments that could eliminate the genetic defects instead of giving that unfortunate fetus no chance at all.

The Union is concidering this to be an atrocious act of barbarism and genocide. We affirm our commitment to life, no matter what form it takes, and we believe that innocent life needs to be protected. The Union is allocating $5,000,000 to spread anti-NETSEL propoganda in your country and ours. This includes any form of mass-media available and covert operations spreading leaflets and other material to undermine support for this bill. We plede with the Prime Minister to veto this bill if it passes.

The Parliament and Cabinet in Vintovia are split on this issue, but a national referendum showed that 45% were for and 55% were against. So currently, there will be no such bill in Vintovia.

However, we believe that for the good of the Country, a bill should be introduced at some point, to reduce benefits and public healthcare for Terminal/Incurable diseases/defects that serverely reduce quality of life.
Such patients cost Vintovia an estimates $125 Billion every year. Money that could be spent elsewhere, or on tax cuts.

Louis was having a pretty crappy day, called in early morning to weigh in on the issue of using cloned human embryos for research to cure debilitating illnesses. It was bad enough that it was early, it was worse that he had to listen to some nutjob spouting off on the sanctity of human life. That was the price he paid for accepting the National Medical Advisor job, but he couldn't complain about the pay.

"High Councilman, it seems that the nation of Sel Appa is attempting to introduce a natrual selection bill." he announced. "It seems to be hotly debated, and their Parliment is split on the issue..." Louis continued noticing a seemingly apathetic look on the High Councilmans face, "And why exactly should we care about this again?" the High Councilman inquired. "Well it's not so much the bill itself that should interest you, but a couple on nations have decided to spread propaganda in their countries and Sel Appa against the bill." the advisor proclaimed as he handed the High Councilman some papers.

The High Councilman seemed a bit annoyed by this new, he thought that he was done dealing with childish banter for the day, but that obviously wasn't the case. "Let me get this straight....they are spending $5, 000, 000 pushing propaganda against a bill that has not only polarized the Parliment where it is being debated, but has been threatened to be vetoed by the Chancellor if it passes....?" the High Councilman inquired. "Yes, it seems overkill is the word that would describe this situation quite nicely." Lous said frankly. "Whatever then, if they want to waste their money on a bill that doesn't effect them and will most likely fail already they can. It just provides us with something to laugh at." the High Councilman said chuckling as he turned back to the television show he was watching before this interruption. "Just have a statement sent out, hopes Chancellors changes are met blah blah blah, hope the demonstrations remain peaceful us yada yada yada, call those other two countries morons for wasting money, and call it a day." the High Councilman said while dismissing his advisor. Now he could finally get back to watching Rocky and Bullwinkle, "Such a crazy moose." he chuckled to himself.

Official Republic Statement

The People's Republic of New Sans wishes to register it's hope that the bill will include the changes set forth by Chancellor Ngu Phuok Dinh. We are pleased that the demonstrations against this bill have remained peaceful and hope this situation will be resolved without bloodshed. We would aslo like to state to all countries spending their money against the bill that we're sure they wouldn't like other countries to spend a couple million to interfere with their politics, and hope they realize that even if the bill is passed it has already been stated that it will most likely be vetoed.

Aust hopes that such a bill will not be passed, but we are afraid it will. Evoloution demands that children with such 'birth defects ' be born, so as to advance the evoloution of the specise.

Our thumbs were considered birth defects by our earliest ancestors:

A: WHAT THE **** IS COMING OUT OF YOUR BABIES HAND?!?!
B: I don't know, looks like an extra finger, that wiggles funny.
A: Clearly he is defective and must be destroyed.
B: **** you.

"This Nazist, anti-Christian bill must not be allowed to pass. All lives are sacred, unless they're communist, Nazist, socialist, leftist, Jehovah's Witness, scientologist, Mormon, environmentalist, humanist, satanist, or...well, most lives are sacred, and people should be aborted just because they are disabled. Eugenics and abortion are always wrong, with no exceptions."

"Seeing as a crippled, defective or diseased Charr could quite easily rip you limb from limb without so much as a second thought, I think you ought to consider exactly how 'crippled' you must be to fall into this bill's grasp. A child with nothing but a head, assuming it could remain alive, could contribute on some cognitive level -- note that a great many of your human scientists have been afflicted with some disability or another yet contributed more than you ever could.

It is Charrian tradition to allow offspring to die quickly if they are found to have no abilities whatsoever, be they mental or physical abilities -- 'vegetable' is the mocking term used by humans, I think. The same also applies to offspring who will likely be in pain for their entire lives. There is no honour to be found in either existence, and so they are sent to the Gods of Fire with their honour intact and their souls pure. Any offspring with the ability to contribute to society (and who will not live in too much pain in the process) has potential and the ability to gain honour, thus there is no reason to send them to the Gods.

To do so could be denying yourselves the next great artist, scientist, or military tactician. Thus, to do so would be foolish and short-sighted."

A sampling of 2500 people in Sel Appa has found support and opposition split 49-49 with 2% undecided. A prevote in Parliament which samples the views of 100 Representatives found support around 40%. Analysts suggest as much as 65%. Representatives are asked to not state their views in public. The vote is set for 18 July 2005.

Protest update:
Two protestors were arrested because they were fighting over who would hold the sign: "Abortion is MURDER!" They were released afted paying a £1000 fine each.

The results are in and it seems the polls and estimates were quite wrong. An amazin 270 representatives voted against it. Only 81 for it, making a 70% dissention.

Representative Richard Latortue(Soc.-Versaille), a dissenter, had this to say:
"This bill is black and white, while we need a more complex set up. I am currently writing a new bill with some other representatives. A simple explanation is that it allows blind, deaf, and similar babies to be born. But, if it's missing a leg, it's aborted."

Other representatives suggest allowing all babies to be born and just sterilizing them. Yet others want more than the three-level explained by Rep. Latortue. It will be a week or so before the next version hits the floor.
