[CGN-1100 Unyielding Class Nuclear powered Guided Missile Cruiser]

Design

The CGN-1100 Unyielding is a heavy cruiser, larger than the Brimstone at 65,000 tons full load. The vessel is a sleek, stealthy trimaran design, with primary VLS cells forward of the frontal turret. The superstructure is dominated by the SANSPY-9 Radar array, and the rear of the ship contains a lighter amount of weaponry to accomodate for its helicopter/VTOL hangar. The Unyielding will be the first vessel in the UCSNE navy to be built with the new armor scheme, and it incorporates nearly as much protection as the Vorster BBGN. It has an array of modern damage control systems (NBC, pressure control, titanium structure, double hull, many bulkheads, so on, so forth), and additional armor to important systems or facilities throughout the vessel. All weapons that need them have autoloaders, and there is a very high degree of automation, meaning the crew is usually around 300.

Propulsion

Designed to function as a heavier alternative to the FDI Sabre in UCSNE service, the Unyielding does not skimp on speed. Three Agulhas Industries APN Mk X Pebblebed nuclear reactors are mounted on the ship, each independent in powering and systems to ensure maximum survivability. This powers eight MHD assisted waterjets and two Azipods towards the bow for turning capability. Maximum speed is 40 knots, though the ship rarely travels above 30.

ArmarmentVLS Cells
The Unyielding features the same number of VLS cells, 512, as the Brimstone. The cells are designed to accomodate virtually any vertically fired weapon in the UCSNE arsenal, and the majority of the cells are mounted forward of the forward gun turret.

90mm Guns
Mk95 90mm ETC/EM rifled guns are mounted in two double-weapon turrets, one forward, and one aft of the vessel. The 90mm guns are designed for high ROF and adaptability with the versatile UCSNE 90mm Weapon System. They can fire at roughly 120 RPM, though this is rarely used. The 90mm Guns are really secondary weapons, though they have proven very useful with missile threats. When loaded with a 'beehive' round, large caliber guns with high ROF have become very useful against the mass missile barrages usually encountered when the USCN goes to war. As such, the 90mm Guns are linked through the 'Gibson' Fire Control subsystems to the radar.

Defensive Surface to Air Missile System

4 MkXXVI 'Pepperbox' DSAMS are mounted on the ship. These were used to replace the RAM System used before the first refit, when they were replaced and fired SAM versions of the AIM-108 Coffin Nail missiles. Now, however, they have been changed to launch the new AIM-112 Spearhawk missiles. Each MkXXVI has 10 missiles, with 30 more in internal magazines.

ASROC
4 MkXXIII ASROC systems are mounted on the vessel, one on each 'corner' of the outer hulls. Each unit has 3 tubes, 660mm in diameter. Instead of making systems with multiple tube diameters, the MkXXIII ASROC solved this problem when it was introduced on the Honor class frigate. A variety of torpedo can be launched, even the new long range DSEMP torpedo that is in service with the Poseidon. Smaller torpedos are mounted inside sabots for deployment. Usually, 60 torpedo are carried.

35mm (Super 50) CIWS/THEL
Replacing UCSNE MSCIWS is a much more effective dual barrel 35mm gun system. With 1,000 rounds per minute, the 35mm System is also effective against aircraft and light vessels. The primary rounds stocked are 35mm (super 50) AHEAD rounds, though armor piercing and HE rounds can also be stocked and used. Each 35mm CIWS mounts an independent IR, LIDAR, and short range, high resolution Radar. Also incorporated is a short range THEL.

ASHUM
Two MkIX Adaptable High-Speed Undersea Munitions (AHSUM) guns are mounted on the vessel, one towards the bow, the other towards the stern on the underside of the main hull. The streamlined turret coverings can extend to reveal a 30mm Supercavitating KinetiKill round firing automatic gun. The sonar-directed and LIDAR directed AHSUM system is hoped to be the underwater equivalent of the U.S. Navy's Phalanx weapons system, destroying incoming torpedo, especially 'straight shooter' SuCav weapons like the Shkval.
Sensors, Systems, and Countermeasures
The CGN also makes use of the SAN/SPY-9 Multi Function/Volume Search Radar. The SPY-9 is a huge radar system, with a range of over 600 miles. Like the Brimstone, the Unyielding's radar has improved surface detection compared to the DDN. It can simultaneously track and identify up to 1152 targets at one time. The system controls missile launched from the long range missile launchers and the system track and guide each individual missile to an individual target for up to 288 targets. If a target is eliminated, missiles are automatically guided to a new target. The system can also control missiles launched from other linked vessels as well and can also act as fire control for gun mounts. A L/ALS-19 LIDAR system is mounted, with a 175 mile range.

The SBOG-10 Hull Mounted Sonar system has an 60nm range, integrated with a MkXIII ASW Identification and Integration computer for ASW capability, and provides extended coverage of the area. A STBX-20 Towed Array provides a 150nm range of detection. There are two L/SQS-13 Naval LIDAR systems mounted on the underside of the ship to work with the ASHUM guns.

An A/Q-3 Acoustic Daylight Imaging System is used on the vessel for improved detection against submersible vessels and sea mines.

A SAN/WLR-3 provdies a 50% efficiency/range increase over the old American AN/WLR-1 in Over the Horizon Cued Detection, Classification, and Targeting.

A SAN/SLQ-45 EW System is used, to provide EA/ES jamming against radars (Usually terminal guidance). This is integrated with a Pallas Athena system for RCS reduction, and even greater jamming capability (See Pallas Athena Writeup for more). The system also has access to over a dozen decoy launchers for various spectrums of sensors.

The MkX Dinosyus 'Praire/Masker' is used for dealing with torpedo and 'jamming' sonar, along with several 'Cicida' decoy pods, and Mimic Towed/Active Decoys. SRBOC launchers are included as well.

Fire Control and other information intensive tasks are handled by the ship's computer network, the 'Gibson'. Linked with DNI, the Gibson is a fiberoptic network that courses through the vessel, all linked to various conventional and carbon-based computers. The Gibson is extremely useful now that the battlefield has become more missile intensive. The Unyielding is designed to attack enemy warships, and in this task it often becomes the brunt of a significant number of missiles. The superior fleet-networking capabilities and computational power of 'Gibson' allow a ship-killing force to be lead by the vessel, providing an accurate and coordinated missile defense and counterattack.
