Right, so ive got a massive civil war looming on the horizon, and I need to organize my fleets, armies, and other various things in about 4 weeks. Unfortunatly, I have no idea how large a typical starfleet should be, so I was wondering if you guys could show me how you organize your fleets.
It all depends. If you're a nation like me who relies on large ships and massive numbers but low technology, you could have a fleet range of 10,000 to 40,000+ ships
If you rely on technology and moderate sized ships, you could be between 5000 to 10,000 ships.
If you just started out (this doesn't apply to you), you have a small fleet of about 100-800 ships.
Hope this helps.

What in the world are you all talking about? fleets? ships? military? Am I missing something that deals with this part of the game?
Fleet organisationl pattern for a Theao Fleet:
SuperDreadnaught: 1
Dreadnaught: 3
Battleship: 9
Frigate: 27
Cruiser: 81
Corvette: 243

This is roleplay.. it is entirely seperate to your nation page and doens't change it in any way.

500-10,000 ships! Do you know how long that is going to take me to name them all?!

Yes, that does help, but my problem is that so far I have only made 3 classes of ships, and only own 10 of one other type.

Spacedyships tend to be somewhat (Read: excessively) more expensive than wet ships, so, less than what a modern nation could afford as its navy (Although somewhat bigger ships, given energy requirements).
Personally, I would think (But people might disagree with this) that given the (Average) modern navy size of about 1 ship/ million people in the western world (About US standard. Germany has slightly less, the UK almost 50% more), about 1 ship/ 5 mio people is a rather nice statistical value for lowly spacedyness (No shields, no FTL, no reactionless or inertialess drives).
I run with about a ship/ 10 mio people, don't have FTL or reaction/ inertialess drives, no shields... But then, I intend to upgrade to FTL capacity & reactionless wankage after the civil war is over, and don't intend to change the pop/ ship ratio.
So, knowing your ships, I would suggest about 1 ship every ten or fifteen mio people.
Theoretically my fleets are organised into fleets of 24, Nine Tactical Assault Units (Frigate/ Destroyer equivalent), 9 Strategic Assault Units (Cruiser/ Battleship equivalent), 3 Carriers & 3 Orbital Assault Carriers. Base three (Or six) due to space being a three-dimensional battlefield (Ground forces are using base 2/4 )
Practically I ignore organisation issues. They're no fun and don't interest me. At all.
Shipnames on the other hand... Pleasure and Pain, Poor Impulse Control, Stellar Dust Collector, Magnificient Waste of Resources, Insufficient Yield, Potential Space Debris, Not Entirely Insignificant Gun Platform, Almost Incredible Hulk, Orbital Strapon, Kinky Service, Plasmatit...
I love shipnames. But I guess that they're utterly irrelevant for the purpose of this thread.
I'm mildly hypocritical. I have one nation for which I'm using a 1 ship/ mio people ratio. Excessively wankily so. No, nobody is forced to recognise Z Ha Dum. It's wank.

haha, "Insufficient Yield". I might make that the flagship of Michael Ellis, my Minister of Silly Walks.

No one ever said you have to name them all. Just name the ones which you'll mostly Rp with, that's what I do.

I thought of that, but I dont have ANY ships that can serve as flagships in my fleet, and those are usually the ones that are named.

This is the internet. Everything is make-believe.
Just because the concequences of your actions are pre-defined on your profile doesn't make it any less so.
Why not develop a new 'flagship' class ship?

I would like to, but i simply have no time. The civil war starts on my 1 billionth citizens birth, and i think im at 900 million already.
I'd be willing to help with the development. I could help create a new ship for you before you reach 1 billion, as you are presently at 837 mill.

oh, whew. Thought I was at 900 million already. Anyway, sure, id love to develop a ship with you. I was just looking at my size scale (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8697043#post8697043), and thinking that itd be great to build a Juggernaught, but i dont have the facilities or resources.

Actually, on second thought, the Dreadnaught or Meganaught would be better choices, because we could build more than one.

Right, im designing a new clas sof ships specificly designed to act as flagships. They will boast a length of over 9,000 meters, have a main gun that cna atomize moons and obliterate hive cities, and can be expected in the comming weeks.
