What Earth am I on?

Obviously, there are a lot of parallel earths on NS. A recent thread asked among other things what earth one's nation was on. I realized I had no idea. I'm still relatively new here (May of this year) and it never occured to me. Is being on a specific earth by invitation/ sign-up? can I try to start my own earth (assuming I can get anyone to join me)? If this sounds like a stupid question, forgive me. I just think it wouls be kind of nice to "formalize", as it were just exactly where Maineiacs is.

I imagine you're on the basic 'NSEarth', which I just made up on the spot. It's five times the size of the sun and totally unmapped.
That stuff always confused me to no end. I'm in a parallel universe on the planet Terra, modeled after Earth but with two moons. You can be there too (and you don't have to join my region to get there, either. ;)). Or just go to Earth XLVIII, or whatever it's up to by now.
Calculation time: Earth has ~7 billion people.
NS has ~83000 billion.
Therefore it would take 11,857 Earths to fit all of NS's ~1.5 million nations.
So you're on Earth NMDCCCLVII or something like that. :confused:

More or less, yes. As I understand it, the various "earths" were started as a means of allowing for different players to claim to "own" various real geographic areas. They are usually member specific role-plays. IMHO, they seem to have become a popular fad, and, on occassion, a means of excluding or ignoring players you don't like. (Other players may disagree.)
You are not required to role-play on any Earth.
I've never even heard of more than one earth existing on NS
Take a gander at the RP forums sometime. There're earths I through VIII, plus Earth DA/RB, Earth Greece, Earth Tomorrow, etc., etc., etc.
