Toward A New Nation

Resland
08-07-2005, 00:51
(OOC: Hey guys, new nation but I've had limited experience on the forums before, just trying to get my country on the radar)

The new Resish government building roared with activity. Various officials, young and old bustled about the marble and mohogany building, carrying with them briefcases and large manilla folders. They jammed fingers in their ears, adjusting newly issued earpeices. Mobile phones buzzed and sang the pop charts all day long, as Resland and it's new managing staff prepared for the most important of closeups.

In a back office, Michael Parks fiddled with his tie and ignored a very important looking aide.
"And if they ask you about..." The young woman started to say
"If they ask me anything about anything, I'll make sure I stand you up there." He said, jokingly.
"Mr. Prime Minister, this is very importnat, the whole nation is on display." She said, the slightest amount of fear present in her voice.
"So then I'd better not say that bit about my trousers, then?"
"Mr.." She started to say
He gave her the slightest of winks and grabbed a folder off of his desk.

Before anyone could come and get him, he was ready. He walked importantly out of his office and down the numerous halls of 1 Resland Place, he looked up at the faces of dead generals and past diplomats and exhaled deeply. He was ready, and hoped the world coudl say the same.

He walked into a room infested with reporters and as soon as the door opened the flashbulbs clicked and clicked. He tooked his position and purposely looked at the the cameras.

"Today is the day that we move on. We move on from the shadow of the past, the horrors of a long civil war. We move on with a new nation in mind, free of disputes and full of hope. Today we stand on history's pages, and thoughtfully rewrite them. Today will be the day that will be remembered forever, but it is our duty to determine by who. Will it be remembered by a nation of fantatics or citizens too afraid to leave their homes? Will it be remembered by an opressed people that protest in the street daily for change? Or will it be remembered by the free and fearless, the strong and healthy. We will do our best to realize the dream of a new nation, borne of blood and violence, but living in peace and serenity. So let it be here and now that the country of Resland utters it's first breath, speaks it's first words. Let the world recieve us as we would recieve them, with open and undescriminant arms. We tell the world now that we are open for anything, and we proudly ask for recognition and acceptance into the international community, thank you."

Hello, I'm Natasha Ambrose, and you're watching RBC News. On the top of the headlines today, Newly selected Prime Minister Michael Parks gave his first speech as holder of the office. He touched on the region's troubled past, and hopes for the future.

In other news, this is now the seventh day that protestors have filled the capital square, asking for reunification with the former Resish Union. Attempts to keep the crowd in check soon escalated into violence. Head Police Chief Wilmington had this to say;
"You never know now, these days. That's the thing that we're most afraid of. We know the past of the region, and we know that things can get out of hand quickly."

Fourteen people, including three police officers were treated at First Lexington Hospital for their injuries.

Now we are joined in the studio by Brian Cramer, a political analyst at The University of Lexington. Mr. Cramer, let's jump right into to it, how did you think the speech went today.
"Well I have to say that it was a bit problematic for me, I don't think the Prime Minister did enough to quell the fears of some of the citizens."
How do you mean?
"Well you've got shares that are in the toilet, we've got protestors out in the streets attacking police officers, and the Prime Minister wants to explain it all away with big words with no plans. That's simply not how you start a government, and not how you manage a country."
Harsh words there, especially for a man who is just trying to find his legs in a new environment.
"They're true words, and that's the heart of it. You can't expect to make anything better with a simple, fluffy speech. Looking at him I didn't know if he was trying to lead me as a citizen or muster my nerve for a football match."
But isn't it safe to say , professor, that the speech he gave was exactly what the Resish citizenry needed to hear?
"How do you mean, Ms. Ambrose?"
Well, he's coming into a new situation and has had really no time to put his feet on the ground. Thde Resish Union fell apart violently and rapidly and all of the sudden within a few weeks, they had picked Michael Parks to run this part of the former union and thrust the reigns to a runaway carriage to him. He can't have made too many plans, having had so little time. Did you want him to simpy say "I have nothing, and do a jig?"
"No, no, but at least he could have had some outlines prepared, talked about where the nation was heading and not given us some speech he probably wrote up in five minutes."
I heard it was ten, professor. That's the bell and that means that we'll be taking a commercial break, we'll have more head news after the jump.

***

And welcome back, more head news coming your way. Resish Union Reunification leader, Stephan Brewer vowed today to not stop fhis inspired protests and threats of violence until Resland signs an agreement saying it will join back with the union.

And a late breaking story, Prime Minister Parks said today that he would be open to new possibilities with another nation;

"Yes, I've recieved correspondance from the Republic of Marric, they sent their best wishes and remain open for new possibilities. I will be sending them back that we are open to a possible embassy exchange or alliance options. It's a funny thing, because we're sending correspondance back and forth like school children, it's kind of like, do you want an embassay exchange circle yes or no and meet me by the lunchroom. We will, of course, be setting up an official line of communications at 1 Resland Place, I'll be happy to get my personal inbox back."

Stay with RBC News as we'll have sports, weather and entertainment news coming your way, I'm Natasha Ambrose, and you're staying with RBC through the night.

The Empire looks favorably on the rise of Resland as a sovereign state, and extends congratulations to Prime Minister Parks on assuming his position at the head of the nation. The great and wise Emperor Antonius the Magnificent has stated his desire and intention to open further relations with Resland, hopefully ushering in a period of peace and friendship between Generia and the new nation.

To: Prime Minister Michael Parks

As has been made clear by the Imperial government, Generia is highly interested in beginning a working diplomatic relationship with your nation, and asks permission to establish an Imperial embassy in your capital city. We of the Imperial government will extend a similar offer for your nation to set up diplomatic facilities in one of the diplomatic buildings in Generia City set aside for such purposes. The Empire also notes with dismay the situation involving civil unrest in your nation, and noticing your recent rise from the ashes of collapse and civil war, Emperor Antonius further offers to deploy elements of the Imperial regular army to serve as peacekeepers, thus freeing up units of your own military and civil police to take care of other pressing matters.

It is with great humility and respect that we recieve your nation's correspondance. The very fact that you would recieve us, a young upstart nation, with the treatment of an equal speaks volumes on the kindness and respect afforded in the international community. We appreciate your willingness to interact and to bestow trust upon us in the very fragile practice of international relations. We hold you in the highest regard and pledge to you that you will not regret your decision.

On the subject of trade, Resland boasts a very strong Industrial sector producing automobiles of the highest quality. We also are blessed with a very small amount of oil, and would be very willing to export it to you. Having land such as ours does not afford us very many farming opportunities but we have vast interests in grapes and olives, with a certain flair for winemaking. As our relationship grows we would also be welcome to invite certain peoples of interest into our community of fine companies. Even in our youth, Resland has proved a bustling business centre.

On the subject of our diplomatic dealings we assure you that your diplomatic staff will be greeted and treated with the respect and reverence appropriate for the situation. While the deatils are finalized we would of course offer Questor Whelp a stay at 1 Resland Place, he would have a security detail and would be removed from our government dealings. If this is not satisfactory, we of course will pay for his lodgings in Lexington's finest hotel.

Again we thank you for your cooperation and respect, ours is a friendship that will prove lucrative in the future. As we grow, we will never forget who first outstretched the hand of diplomacy to us, if we have inherited anything from the old union, it is that we never forget.

It humbles Resland that the Generic Empire would allocate such attention to us with little prior contact. Before the necesities of business fall upon our nations I would like to thank you for such a trusting gesture of cooperation. Is is with a humble demeanour that Resland responds to you, and we strive further to know more about your empire. We hope that a future friendship will provide steps in the right direction for both our great nations.

In response to your request for embassy exchange we gladly accept and we would ask you to send diplomatic staff to Lexington to understand more of what makes Resland run. They will of course be afforded top notch lodgings, be that in our very own 1 Resland Place or in one of Lexington's many fine hotels. In return we wil also send diplomatic personnel to Generia city. In Resland we pride outselves on our commitment to humanize procedures like this. Recieve our diplomats not only as compensated personnel, but as representatives of Resish culture and values.

On the matter of your generous offer of security personnel I must, sadly, decline. The gesture is highly respectable, but it's ramifications would be astronomical. As of now, Resland struggles to step out of the shadows of the former union. We continuously work to find our on way, our own national identity. To bring in foreigners to quell our problems would be a misstep from the department of the Prime Minister. I'm more than certain you know of showing strength in times of turmoil. I cannot, at this time, show any weakness in the face of our problems. it is my job to guide our people safely from danger and into prosperity.

Your support and your generosity will be remembered. The Resish people never leave debts unpaid, and in our maturity we will remember the strength and respect you bestowed upon us. If ever your mighty empire be in the slightest of turmoils you only need to look to us, our response will be swift and it will be strong. Thank you.

In sports, all of Lexington was abuzz with the final preparations for the Resish Grand Prix, which has been set to go on even after the split of the former union.

Lexington United looks to make a bid for striking sensation Bruce Gregory, the superclub are reportedly looking to take him off of current holders, Bremen for a reported price of 28 million pounds. When asked about the benefits, Lexington United manager Eric Weller had this to say;

"When you are given an oppertunity such as this one, to acquire a player, such as this one, it would be a disservice to your club not to jump on it with all available resources. I think he will be a great addition up front, as we've had some issues finishing as of late."

Gregory shined in a sparkling run in the Union cup with Bremen.

We'll be back with head news after the jump, I'm Natasha Ambrose and you're waking up with RBC News.

***

Hello, I'm Natasha Ambrose and this is your head news.

Prime Minister Parks has been hard at work, recieving his first round of diplomatic negotiations. He has reportedly started the early stages of embassy exchanges with the Generic Empire, and the Republic of Marric. The Prime Minister is hopeful about the diplomatic future of the nation, and said this on the situation;

"When you are in a position such as ours, you take it. Obviously, these are bigger and more lucrative nations and we look to see strong bonds develop in the international community. These are the foundations of strong, healthy diplomatic relationships that may, in the future, produce alliances or partnerships."

In other news, Secretary to Prime Minister Parks was arrested today after reportedly sending confidential documents to the Resish Union Reunification syndacate. Mary Clarke was arrested, and a search of her office revealed several copies of classified documents that relayed information about arms manufacturing.

In Business news, Chief Executive Wilmington Furrows of NetPlace, the communications giant, anounced that it would be putting in a bid to takeover upstart company BroadNet, a frequent rival with the company. Netplace stock saw a rise at this information, while BroadNet suffered the slightest dip, ending their four week string of signifigant increases.

And of course now we are joined in the studio, by Stephan Brewer, leader of RUR. Hello, Stephan.

"Hello, Natasha, always a pleasure."

let's get right into it, Mr. Brewer, what are your aims, and what are you willing to do to get them.

"My aims are simple, complete and swift reunification with the Resish Union, and I will do anything within reason to accomplish this."

And, is destroying a supermarket full of innocent citizens within reason, then?

"I had nothing to do with that, that act was barbaric and wa scertainly not sanctioned or carried out by RUR."

The men who claimed responsibility demanded reunification and claimed to be in line with RUR

"There are a lot of people in resland who want the same thing. It seems to be a current trend of this government to ignore the voice of the many for the wishes of the few."

Why do you believe that Resland should reunite the union?

"Economic strength, diplomatic power, military might. It was a foolish move by Resland to disband the union. RUR is trying to save this nation from it's corrupt and ignorant leaders. they would be the death of us all, leaving a strong and powerful union for the poverty of a democracy."

So you're saying that you support the old totalitarian state of Resland?

"With my life's blood I support the old government, It led us through numerous wars and brought us light when all other lights went out. Our government cared for us, and not morality, sometimes what's moral isn't always right, what's right isn't always moral."

So the killing of women and children kept our nation strong?

"Who am I to argue with the ways of a successful and strong nation?"

In a recent independent poll, fifty seven perecent of Resish people said they prefer the new government to the old, what does that tell you on public opinion?

"It tells me that supporters are afraid to vote, in fear of being branded a terrorist, as this nation is so quick to brand them."

Anything else to add, Mr. Brewer?

"I would tell the people of this nation to stand up and speak out. Do not let this foolish minority speak for you. You are not a terrorist, your words are not bombs, your opinions are not bullets. If these pigs want democracy then stand in the streets! Protest with all you have, let them know that you do not agree with them and that their little democratic experience will leave us in ruins! It will bring the invaders to circle like vultures. We are weak! We are prawn to the sharks of the world! Let us not be driven into darkness by the blind! For we can see, we can think, and we see the turn of the tables, we see the enemies of the great Resish Union encircling us and soon nothing will be left of us! We walk in darkness now, but if the circumstances become any more desperate, we will make our own light."

I'm Natasha Ambrose and you're waking up with RBC News, your weather is next.

The people of Novikov have been all too familiar with the ravages of war and civil strife in these past decades, and we offer Resland and its inhabitants our most sincere hopes that peace and stability will soon find your land, as we hope it will find Novikov once more. It was formerly the policy of the Novikovian people to offer diplomatic and economic support to fledgling nations – if only through gifts of a few thousand Euros. However, our current political situation has left the entirety of Novikov’s bureaucracy with only local administrative powers, and we are thus unable to offer anything more than this letter until our situation within the United Kingdom becomes more clear.

We gladly take your hand in friendship, and we would also gladly open up new trade routes. Business is very important to Resland, as we are looking for ways to bring our great people back to the prosperity they once enjoyed. However, while the old union dealt in blood, with threats and violence we hope through fairness and the relationships that international kindness brings, we can breathe life back into Resland. We are more than happy to open ourselves up for trade to the world, and we know that the world will not regret our fine products in the market.

In regards to your more than generous offer, we gladly accept. As we produce these things in somewhat of an abundance ourselves, we have no real want of them. However, as new friends and trade partners, I must look on this oppertunity as the further extension of your hand in friendship. We shall arrange for delivery of a very small amount of steel and grapes, as we wish not to take away from your citizens what they are likely more than entitled to. So let us raise our glasses to the future of our nations, united now in commerce, but united forever by friendship. Thank you.
