OOC: About n00b spam threads

OOC: I whole heartedly agree with Fris about an ever growing trend in II. When some random n00b comes into II and posts a 'I D3CL4R3 W4R ON T3H WURLD!!111' or 'D3STORY T3H UN!!11' thread, it is immediatly swamped by 'anti-n00bs' who proceed to feed the troll and keep the thread active.

People, please. When you see such a thread, LEAVE IT ALONE. There really is no reason to post anything in it, just let it quietly slip to the bottom of the forum and die a lonely death.

3 pages of 'kill the n00b!' or 'stupid nub! I declare war on j00!' is just plain stupid, and you only make yourself look like a noob in the process. Do us all a favor and leave the thread alone. There are much more deserving threads that are getting sent to the bottom of the forum because some random n00b decides to declare war on Max Barry.

Sheesh.....agree with me if you will, but it will mean nothing unless we ALL leave these kinds of threads alone.

EDIT: And no, I'm not a moderator. Just an avid II roleplayer that is fed up and has seen more than enough of this.

I haven't seen any n00b "declare war on the world!!!" threads lately. Then again, I have been only focusing in Earth V, Earth TLE, and the latest RP project in Alternate Earth 1900 - 2000.

I do agree that these n00b threads should be left alone to wither and die.

I see them on a disturbingly regular basis. And instead of just being left to die, they end up dragging on for 5 or 6 pages.

I disagree with AMF to an extent. I'm not suggesting people go into these threads and begin an anti-n00b campaign I agree with him that these are needless, worthless, and unfair on threads which actually have a lot of work gone into them.

But I do think that a single person should attempt to give the newbie a rundown of the guidelines, and how to RP properly. If the n00b is incapable of listening to reason, then certainly ignore the thread from then on. If the newb is actually willing to learn, then a decent RPer could be salvaged. You have nothing to lose from making a single attempt, but we could gain a lot. Everybody has to start somewhere, remember. But a flood of people pointing out the same stickies is just as unnecessary as a bunch of people flaming the newbie -- one is enough.

i think leaving n00b threads alone is a great idea, the best way is to ignore them. the threads that get the most attention are the ones that declare war on a specific country, as countless allies and allies of allies jump in for a bit of good-old bloodshed.

following the slippery slope of logic, maybe each player should have a rating from 0 to 1000 that is influenced by either others (click a + or -) or by a selected team of quality RPers who are dedicated to keeping crap off the forums. This may be hugely impractical, but a line (say about 10/1000) could be drawn where others are automatically advised to ignore the thread. Maybe if they stay at 0 (or close) for a determined period of time they are deleated. Of course, people will overrate their allies and puppets and throw hate at their enemies. It could be improved upon, but as it stands it would leave the team no time to get their own RPs.

And I disagree with you to an extent.

I have been on NS since March 2003. In my experience, when a n00b comes onto the forums and posts a thread (usually they only make 1 or 2 posts, then forever disappear), they usually have no intention of actually reading the stickies and learning how to roleplay properly. They're just here to post garbage and get a response.

People like this:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=430506

are more than likely to care less about RP etiquette, so preaching to them about the rules is futile. However, people such as this:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=430561

Are probably willing to learn the ropes, and therefore should be given help.

But seriously now, when you see a person who just signed up for NS (and has zero posts) make a thread like:

 I DELCARE WAR ON TEH UN BECUZ ITZ FOR ****** (blah blah blah) :sniper: :mp5: :gundge: :upyours:

I VERY much doubt you will ever get through to them. The latter are the kinds of threads that should never be replied to.

A newb would be willing to learn and acknowledge mistakes and learn from others, whether well written or not. Basically, they respond to logic. As such there could be potential in them. As I said, everyone has to start somewhere, and stupid mistakes or errors of judgement are often prerequisites of a 'first attempt' at anything. These are the guys that need a little guidance sometimes.

A n00b would simply repeat the same basic 'i iz l00king 4 attention, rawr!' rhetoric until driving people insane. You could tell them they've made a mistake over and over until you go blue in the face, and they would either ignore you or insult you. These are the guys you can leave alone. But to find out if they are unwilling to learn, you have to try and teach them first.

Neither group would respond well to offensive put-downs or being patronised, so there's no point in doing so.

The second thread listed above is an example of the former, not because it's well-written, but because the author responds to logic.

As a side-note, I completely detest all these internet slang terms.

A newb is someone who shows interest in learning the game and actually makes an effort toward that end. A n00b is someone who shows no interest in learning the game and continues to play whatever is in his mind. The second thread linked teeters on the fence between newb and n00b.

I agree with AMF. In a lot of cases, n00bs do that to get attention. A newb often doesn't get attention unless he does something outrageous (ala Feline Catfish). It's very rare that a genuine newb (not to be confused with veteran players who are starting over with new countries) gets attention for something positive. It's one of the worst things about NS in my book.

If you see one of these I n00k j00!!!!1111 threads, just don't post in them. You can tell the difference between a newb who makes a mistake stemming from inexperience with NS and a n00b. Usually, you can also tell when a newb has the potential to be a great RPer down the line.

Hmm. I support the "Give a n00b 1 chance" idea. However, there are probably some n00bs that would need quite some time to improve. Take Hataria for example.

Hataria was crazy last year, but now his RP has improved somewhat, and much less god-modding. No more "Discover aircraft carriers and battleships inside caves" like during the Hatarian Mammalian war that I was part of.

I agree, there is little hope for them, but there's no harm in trying once and then leaving them to it. I would much rather have that one constructive post from someone looking to help them out than a series of posts which amount to little more than a witch hunt. It takes a minute at most to point them in the right direction, and then you can leave them to decide if they want to go in that direction.

You are entirely missing the point of this thread.

This has nothing to do with newbies who are trying to get into RPing. This has everything to do with n00bs who come onto the forum and make a thread with almost nothing but smilies and maybe 2 or 3 words.

It goes without saying that if a newbie is trying to RP that they should be given a chance, but that is not the topic of discussion here.

It's much simpler to just ignore the threads and leave it up to the "n00bs" to learn the way of things here. It's not really that posting in these thread will make the poster look bad, it's that posting in such a thread is simply pointless, and serves no purpose. In the end, just don't give them attention in any form - including a thread that talks about the exact same thing.

Omz, this is an ongoing problem. Problems do not fix themselves on their own, they need to be addressed, discussed, and a solution needs to be presented. I hope Fris goes through with this and gets the senior mod staff to make a decision on baiting n00b spammers.

However, nothing would have ever been done about this if no one spoke up. Play Devil's Advocate all you want and say that threads like this give the n00bs more attention, but in my experience until someone finally speaks up (which I'm more than happy to do) the problem only gets worse.

I agree with you that these n00b threads should not be targeted by a morass of anti-n00bs; they should be left to drop into oblivion. I'm just saying that it hurts nobody whatsoever to quickly point out the error of their ways in a single post, and then leave them to it. I am not going to lie, in the past I have been guilty of jumping on a n00b's back, and thus becoming part of the problem instead of part of the solution, but so have probably anywhere from 80-90% of role players with at least a year of role playing under their belts. Based on the reasons I have done it and why I suspect others do it as well, I believe that most of these people want attention just as much as the n00b does, but instead of directly coming out and looking like a n00b themselves, try to mask it by attempting to sound intelligent. And, just like every other problem International Incidents has been plagued with throughout the years I have been here, can only be corrected when one side (in most cases the n00bs) stops doing whatever it is they are doing. Plus, I know for a fact that some of the established nations of International Incidents make a puppet nation with the sole purpose of trying to get the role playing community pissed off, so unless an extremely well learned group of new role players comes to International Incidents and no one makes puppets to act like n00bs, the problem being discussed in this topic will only end if the "swampers" ignore the n00bs and puppets.

However, there will always be those who would try to gain recognition by putting others down, and those who believe that their intelligence is so much greater than others that they believe it is their mission to correct whatever they see as wrong. So in reality, this problem will never fully disappear.

That is my view on this problem, and I hope everyone can understand it without getting lost, because it may be a little jumpy and all over the place.

I ignore such threads as those nations don't exist.
Once in awhile, some new nation, like Graeltonia, declares war on the world. Graeltonia doesn't exist in any of the earths or universes in which my nation exists so his declaration does not affect my nation. Hence no need to post in such threads.

<<applause for AMF>>

That was something that's needed to be said for awhile now, and I wholeheartedly agree with you. You probably remember the thread that The Silver Sky started on this same topic (which was actually a good one until it degenerated into useless spamming). Well, not too long after that, there was a n00b by the name of Culpeper Virginia who came on and did a "OMG LOLZ I DECLARE WAR ON TEH WORLD!!!!!!111one1eleven" thread. Well, some of the very same people who said they supported TSS' idea on not responding to such threads went in and baited him. I posted something along the lines of, "Guys, please stop baiting the n00b. We just had a thread on how we're supposed to be ignoring them." The reply I received, IIRC, was something like, "But it's so much fun!" To be fair, though, I believe Haitenstan posted some n00bish threads recently, and they were completely ignored, so props to those who resisted the urge to post. In short, thank you, AMF: this was something that needed to be said, and something we can all do to make II a better place.

How is this even possible on NS, annex would mean taking over by force and using it. This isn't possible if the person decides to ignore or do nothing about it.

If actual NS had annexation many 'noob' nations that pop up would be crushed and controlled by another nation extremely fast. One could create these 'puppet' nations and RP them differently to trick and control other nations. Though it would have to go beyond text based for such things.

In the end, a noob isn't worth it. And such threads end up taking server space. The bandwidth dealing with this place is already slow enough as it is, without such idiotic threads.

There is only one place for a noob. Prove their worth effectively, or don't even bother. There's probably a noob chatty site for such things out there already. Go there, not here.

Guys, seriously...

Don't post anymore to this thread. When you see a thread such as this, LEAVE IT ALONE. There really is no reason to post anything in it, just let it quietly slip to the bottom of the forum and die a lonely death.

I'm an extremely intelligent individual, so please don't resort to schoolyard name calling. You're not impressing anyone by trolling.

You may have noticed people have these things called accents. As a reporter from The Craven Herald i think I know abouts whats acceptable to most people. And Pot. Kettle. Black. Are also gramatical abborations.

If I came on saying that all Muslims wanted to kill everybody (which is an unfair generalization) then I'd be kicked off in a second. Racism is against races, the Americans are a race, therefore this guy is racist. I used race a lot there but there you go!

Guys this is turning into a flame war and it's getting you no where... at best it's probably best to just ignore Islamic Daingean as it's clear he can't reply to a post without flaming the other players directly.

As others have stated, the best thing to do with such "n00b spam threads" is to ignore them outright and not to start flaming them or pointing out how "n00bish" they are as it just ends in a pointless arguement... It is possible to attempt constuctive criticism without it turning into a flamefest, however you need to be respectful while doing so otherwise you are likely to get a hostile responce. Personally however I stopped doing a while back as it can be taken the wrong way and only a few people listen.

Then I highly suggest you read the International Incidents Consolidation Sticky (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=414035) and learn how to properly RP.
