The Crooked Beat
03-07-2005, 04:24
OCC: Someone lights a cigarette while riding in a car
Some old man takes a swig and passes back the jar
But where they were last night, no one can remember
Somebody got murdered, for all, for keeps, forever

Somebody...got murdered!
Somebody's...dead forevah

Ahem. Just had to get that out of my system. Sandinista, a great album.

Parliament House Bombed! PML Factions Inside Airforce Blamed

Between five and five-thirty in the morning on Tuesday, a squadron of MiG-17 fighter-bombers, reportedly belonging to the 2nd Fighter Regiment, attacked the Houses of Parliament in Bissau with bombs and cannon fire. Fortunately, Parliament was not yet in session and no MPs were present at the time of the attack. Four people were killed and approximately 21 injured in the bombing, and Parliament House suffered moderate damage including shattered windows and a fire, which was brought under control shortly afterwards. This incident comes after the ejection of the Party of Marxism-Leninism (PML) from Parliament, a move triggered by the PML's escalation of military operations in the contested northeastern districts...

General Paul Taylor, commander of the Southern Defense District, has promised to use all means at his disposal to locate and bring to justice the pilots responsible for the attack, although it is believed that all the aircraft involved, belonging to No. 221 squadron, were able to escape into PML-held territory in the northwest of the country...

This recent bombing serves to highlight the Parliamentary government's precarious position and waning support amongst the military. MPs report that they expect more violence in the coming days but will not consent to dissolve Parliament under the present set of circumstances. "The Crooked Beat must not allow itself to be threatened by terrorism and violence. Parliament has a duty to remain in session as long as is possible," says one MP who does not wish to be named...

"This is completely unacceptable, General Taylor! Your report is entirely unsatisfactory, compounded by an attempt, might I add a crude attempt, to cover up the whole issue! Your conduct will be noted, General, believe me."
"Good day, Air Marshal."
"Good day, General Taylor."

Air Marshal Louis Kagame storms out of General Taylor's office, flanked by a pair of Light Infantrymen with Webley revolvers and AKS assault rifles. A land rover waits on the edge of the base's runway, which is flanked by long lines of MiG-21s and MiG-17s, and speckled with various trainers and light planes. While Kagame hates to think it, Taylor is in direct control of the most powerful aerial force in the delta region, threatened only by Kagame's personal 'task group' (Nos. 1, 4, and 5 squadron) of Hawk Mk.200s. The whole upper echelon of the military is a festering pool of corruption and Kagame knows it.

The middle-aged Air Marshal climbs into the Land Rover, followed by the infantrymen, and drives off along a narrow dirt track to his own airbase...

Meanwhile, outside the small regional capital of Cazombo, a detachment of government troops find themselves in a pitched battle with PML units. Dug in north of the town, along the Zambezi R., CBGDF light infantry battalions attempt to hold back what they assume is at least twice their number of PML fighters. 105mm light guns, mortars, and a handful of towed MRLs bombard PML attempts to bridge the river as Scorpion 90s fight ex-government T-55s to the southwest...
