(OOC: Technology question)

i had an idea the other day about a sort of sheild for my troops to use, it stores energy that hits a field and releases it from a backpack, but it doesn't make them invincible, if too more energy is being stored than energy is being released then less energy can be absorbed meaning that if too many hits are taken then the field starts to let shots through, if the amount of energy released is increased then it has a risk of harming the user, i asked my brother (a really intelligent bloke) if this was feasable and he told me that it could be done, but i wanted to know if this was a godmod.

It's future tech. Unfortunately there are plenty of people around here who use that sort of stuff, so you'll fit in nicely.

thats good to know, im always scared about being accused of Godmodding, it's better to be safe than sorry

Basically, a "Deflector Shield"; a shield which deflects and dissipates energy; as opposed to absorbtion shielding; which channels power back into the emiters.

No; it would be an absorbtion-type, in that it absorbs and then radiates imparted energy.

A 'deflector'-type is more along the lines of 'energy armour', in that it creates a barrier that an enemy hammers away at.

As for being 'feasible', well, it doesn't obviously violate the laws of thermodynamics, but there's no feasible way of pulling it off with anything resembling known science - so, decidedly sci-fi/future tech.

absorbtion and re-radiation = deflector.

Absorbtion shields do not re-radiate imparted energy; either it is stored in a sink; or it is used to recharge the emitters themselves (leading to eventual overload if the shield is hammered away at too long).

Deflectors absorb imparted energy; and then channel it away from the system (usually through the shield itself; in this case, it is being dispersed from a stored sink)... So it may be a meshing of the two concepts; storing imparted energy in a sink; which then radiates the energy out of the system....

Both systems are "barriers" and conceptually "energy armor" though they will both handle kenetic attacks as well.

"Energy Armor" is particle shielding; which is a different form; deflectors/absorbers are typically gravimetric "force-field" type systems. Which do not differentiate between kenetic (particle) or ray-based weapons.

Meh; looks like yer a little caught up on specific instances of terminology in a genre defined by it's fundimentally varriable nature. Especially when the tech in question has no basis in real science.

And I've been up for two days straight...

Why am I still here?

*heads off - maybe to bed, may to War of the Worlds*

On one note; I'm merely reffering to the general descriptions used to define the differing words for the types. "Shields" is general. But the terms "Deflector" "Absorber", "Particle" "Ray", "Gravimetric" have taken on their own meanings in the genre.

War of the Worlds Rocked; I recommend seeing it...
