Talks are now underway with the United States of America following purchase of modern warships. A proposed treaty would grant the United States a coaling station under lease, to be operated by a Chilean firm. The United States would support defense of the Straights of Magellan from any European intervention.

In a move to forestall any possible intervention the Central Bank has accelerated payment of government debts to the U.K. and Germany. Diplomatic notes have been sent to the respective powers with the explanation that reduced commercial contact can be expected between Chile and Europe after repayment.

Unemployment has risen to 8.5% since the announcement, mostly due to tighter credit conditions.

Talks are underway with Bolivia regarding an economic union with Chile. A union of the two powers would provide additional leverage over world commodity prices, given their complimentary resources. This would also resolve Bolivia's access to the sea.

All announced candidates for the 1904 presidential elections have reacted negatively to the European invasion of Venezuela. Pablo Escobar, the likely Conservative candidate has stressed the need to pay off European debts as a means to remove any causus belli. Popular Party standard bearer Roberto O'Hara struck a more defiant attitude, proposing nationalization of foreign interests. Senator Alberto Molina, likely successor to the Constitutionalist Party leadership of President was less inflammatory, but did acknowledge the need to remain close to the United States of America, and to seek out new markets outside of the European system.

Meanwhile, the Caracas embassy has been evacuated in anticipation of the expected European takeover and likely looting of our neighboring republic. Given the mood of popular opinion, it is doubtfull that Chile would recognize any puppet of Germany and England in Caracas or elsehwere.

1904 Election Results:

Alberto Molina (Constitutionalist Party) 59%
Roberto O'Hara (Popular Party) 27%
Pablo Escobar (Conservative Party) 14%

In a stunning landslide, Alberto Molina has continued the Constitutionalist hold of Chile's presidency. This has been seen as widespread approval of President Echurren's move away from European influence. It is also widely thought that Molina benefitted from the strong popularity of American President Theodore Roosevelt, in Chile.

Dear Sirs,

We, the Brazilian government are socialist and have very close links with communist nations. If this pact goes ahead your two countries will have to fight me, the biggest nation on the continent. If you do not withdraw this idiotic pact our Western trained army will grind your nations into the dust. The signing of this pact is a declaration of war against us as we have left wing leanings and communist ties so stop the signing of this foolish pact. Other South American countries will not die to defend your foolish alliance. Do not declare war with this pact. We are peaceful and are sad to have to threaten violence but that is exactly what you are doing to us with your alliance.

Regards.

Do not speak for us Ecuador. Chile, Argentina, and I have a defencive alliance. This alliance is not "Anti-Communist" we do not start wars. I will not be in any alliance that has offence as its main priority.

And Brazil, you are indeed the largest country in South America... but only in the geographical sense.

OOC: Yes, still active. Responded to other threads mostly, before S. America got more populated in this RP

IC: The Chilean Foreign Ministry emphasizes it's good relations with all South American neighbors. Overall, we remain a Pacific facing nation, and don't see much quarrel with Brazil. Throughout the 20th Century the policy of close relations with Columbia and the United States has worked well. We recommend it for our Andean neighbors too.

At this time, with modern engineering technology available we propose securing righ-of-way with Argentina for a Trans-Andean rail and road project. This would be of great benefit to the Southern Cone. Our commercial attache will be in contact with Argentine counterparts.
