--------------------------------------------------------------------------L-85A2 assault rifle (http://soldner.jowood.com/images/weapons/L85A2.jpg)

The "Enfield" L85A2 is the main Great Britain army automatic rifle.

The L85A2 is made from a stamped steel. There is also used welding assembling rifle. Some parts are made from extra tight nylon. The Weapon is fed from the standard NATO (STANAG) 30 round magazines similar to the M16 Automatic Rifle. It has 4x magnification and 10 degrees sighting angle. Sight is mounted on a quickly-detachable mount. It's dimensions are 145 x 60 x 60 mm and it has weight in 470 g. Furthermore the L85A1 is compatible with a night vision sights. Furthermore there is ability to use opened sight in extreme situation. Some rifles intended for second-line troops are completed with opened sights only built in the carrying handles.

Advantages:
Compact dimensions. Ability to fire rifle grenades screwed on the muzzle break. Compatible with NATO standards. Weapon is completed with optical sight as standard.

Disadvantages:
Low reliability and troublesome maintenance. Weapon requires usual cleaning. Heavy weight and bad balance makes rifle poorly controllable during automatic fire. Bayonet heats what complicates it's dismantling. Unreliable cartridge-case extraction. Uncomfortable magazine replacement.

G-36 assault rifle (http://soldner.jowood.com/images/weapons/G36.jpg)

The G. 36 Automatic Rifle was developed by the "Heckler & Koch" company in an extra short terms in early 1990 to replace technically quiet good but morally stale G. 3 Automatic Rifle. pistol handle and a trigger guard are built in one trigger group. The standard trigger group allows to execute single fire, 2 shot burst, or automatic fire. There are produced a number of trigger group combinations including earlier mentioned fire modes and a 3 shot burst. The trigger group can be replaced depending on shooter requirements. A reloading handle is placed over the barrel box and is rotated to the shooter preferred side to reload the weapon. This feature in addition to a cartridge-case reflector and a fire mode changer placed from the each side makes the G. 36 ambidextrous. When not in use the reloading handle aligns itself over the barrel box. It moves together with the lock frame when fired. A safety-lock is a fire mode changer at once. Rifle is fitted with a folding right side metal-frame buttstock with a shoulder rubber absorber. This buttstock is standard with all of the G. 36 Automatic Rifle modifications. This feature made the rifle suitable for the airborne troops. Furthermore right folded stock does not interfere with cartridge-case extraction, reloading and other operations. The standard G. 36 is fitted with dual sighting device with a main 3.5x magnification optical sight and a 1x magnification collimator sight (placed above it) built into the carrying handle as standard. The optical sight has a sighting range in 1 000 m while the collimator is intended for a short distances up to 200 m. An export version the G. 36E is fitted only with an optical sight. Rifles can be additionally fitted with an NSA 80 II passive night sight with a sighting range under the moonlight in 350 m. The new automatic rifle can be fitted with the AG36 40-mm underbarrel grenade launcher developed by the same "Heckler & Koch". The G. 36 is completed with the multipurpose knife-bayonet similar to the AKM knife-bayonet. It is fitted with a replaceable flash-hiders. This feature allows to fire standard rifle grenades mounted on the long flash-hider. However it is not recommended as the weapon has no gas pressure adjuster and the rifle grenades can be fired only in extreme situation. A long flash-hider also features ability to cut barbed wire by placing inside the flash-hider and firing.

Advantages:
High reliability; ability to dismantle in the field conditions; good fire accuracy; ability to fire in burst mode and a variety of trigger group combinations; long service life in 10 000 shots; ambidextrous use ability; comfortable use and easy maintenance.

Disadvantages:
Overheating of the foregrip firing in full-automatic mode; the lose of zero point in built in scopes in some rifles; high sighting line; no ability to mount an underbarrel grenade launcher in the field conditions as it needs replacement of the foregrip.

FN FAL assault rifle (http://www.3drt.com/3dm/guns/FN-Fal01.jpg)

The FN FAL Automatic Rifle developed by the Belgium company "Fabrique Nationale" was intended as a main infantry rifle. The name FAL is translated as a "Fusil Automatique Legere" or light automatic rifle. The FN FAL Automatic Rifle can be fitted with a bayonet which is connected on a special device. Rifle can be used to fire rifle-grenades mounted on a long flash-hider. Firing a rifle-grenade the gas chamber is closed by a gas adjuster. FN FAL is fitted with a raised buttstock which decreases recoil power and weapon's tossing in vertical plane. This feature increases a fire accuracy as well. Over the mass center the rifle has additional carrying handle. The FN FAL Automatic Rifle was fitted with a 20 round magazines. A dioptrical opened adjustable sight is placed as a standard. it's muzzle sight is placed on the gas chamber instead the flash-hider. This feature allowed to use a rifle grenades. The Rifle is produced with a light or a heavy barrels. The heavy-barrel one is fitted with a detachable bipod to increase weapons stability and fire accuracy both. This variant of the FN FAL Automatic Rifle can play a role as a light machine gun. These variants are fed from a 30 rounds magazines. However both magazines can be used with the standard FAL Automatic Rifle.

Advantages:
This rifle features comfort and a good fire accuracy. It can fire rifle grenades. 20 round magazine allows shooter to take better position on the ground.

Disadvantages:
The most significant disadvantage is a capricious internal mechanisms which need usual cleaning as usually failures are caused by dust or sand inside the mechanisms or the barrel channel.

Steyr AUG (http://www.sss.no/images/Vaapen%20Steyr%20AUG%20m%20scope.JPG)

Multipurpose Army rifle was developed by company "Steyr" in close relationship with Austrian army. Rifle AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr) has modern design and can be used as airborne assault with 350 mm length barrel, carbine with 407 mm barrel, standard assault rifle with 508 mm and light machine gun with 621 mm barrel. Rifle is supplied with full barrels set and can be recombine by rifleman to modification he needs. Rifle can be easy dismounted into six modules without any tools. It is officially used by 20 countries army's and special forces. Weapon with it's reliability, fire accuracy and comfortable use is a perfect example for other weapon creators. Every rifles type is fitted with 1.5x magnification optical sight made like carrying handle. Furthermore there could be connected with bracket some other optical or night sights. Rifle AUG was developed using "bullpup" principle what allowed to decrease rifles length and made it comfortable not only in the battlefield but in armored personnel carriers as well. "Bullpup" principle also allows to execute fire holding rifle with one hand. One more this scheme advantage is lighter recoil power and rifles tossing after each shot, cause recoil power is pushing weapon directly back but not up like traditional weapons. So using traditional principle rifleman has to re aim after each shot or series. AUG can be comfortably used by right-handed or left-handed shooter. To execute fire from left shoulder you just have to move cartridge-case ejector and turn cartridge-case ejectors chambers panel. Pistol handle is made with large frame covering all hand. It allows to fire with gloves what is very actual for Alpen riflemen and other troops in winter. At the front barrel box part there is folding additional handle for better weapons stability. Rifle can be equipped with a knife-bayonet or with underbarrel grenade launcher M203.

Advantages:
Easy to use, Interchangable parts and easy to dismantle in field positions

Disadvantages:
Poor sight range compared to other assault rifles.(400m)

QBZ-95 (http://www.sinodefence.com/army/individual/type95_rifle58_3.jpg)

The QBZ-95 Assault Rifle was first publicly shown in 1997.It is a new generation Chinese assault rifle. The QBZ-95 was designed by "Norinco" and was adopted by China's armed forces as the Type 95 Assault Rifle. For the moment it is gradually replacing out-dated assault rifles from the Chinese army and in the near future The Type 95 will be the main China infantry assault rifle. The QBZ means "Qing Buqiang Zu" or light rifle family. It is chambered for Chinese 5.8 x 42 mm cartridge. It must be said that when the USA and the Soviet Union began to equip their army's with a small caliber new generation rifles (5.56 x 45 mm and 5.45 x 39 mm consequently) Chinese decided not to adopt one of these cartridges to equip it's army but to design new small caliber cartridge on their own. Rifle is manufactured from high tinsel aluminum and polymer materials unlike the Type 86s which was fully made from stamped steel. It also features a cold hammer forged barrel what is a really great advantage as such barrel provides increased accuracy comparing with usual ones. Assault rifle has a lower weight comparing with it's predecessor. The opened sight is built-in in the rifle's carrying handle. The QBZ-95 can be equipped with a variety of optical or night vision sights over the carrying handle. Rifle is compatible with all STANAG standard accessories. It can be completed with an underbarrel grenade launcher such as the US M203 or it's Chinese copies and multipurpose knife-bayonet.

Advantages:
The QBZ-95 (Type 95) can be compared in it's reliability with the AK Assault Rifles. Assault Rifle features low recoil power and cold hammer forged barrel. These features provide high fire accuracy. Furthermore it executes three shot burst fire. Weapon's compact dimensions, light weight, additional pistol and carrying handles provide comfortable handling and usage including in a limited space areas. It has can be reloaded from the each hand. One more advantage is ability to fed it from the 75 round drum magazine.

Disadvantages:
High sighting line makes quiet dangerous firing from the covers as the shooter must uncover almost till his waist to make a sighted shot. All the "bullpup" design rifles feature uncomfortable magazines replacement. One more disadvantage is that the QBZ built on the "bullpup" principle has insufficient ambidextrous abilities as the extraction opening is placed right.

9A-91 assault rifle (http://www.bellum.nu/armoury/9A91-ls.jpg)

The 9A-91 is a Small-Size Assault Rifle. It is recently in service and is widely used with the special forces and other units of the Russian Internal Affairs Ministry. It was intended to defeat manpower covered with bullet-proof vests in urban environment. It has dimensions in 373 x 190 x 44 (with folded buttstock). This weapon delivers assault rifle power in a submachine gun dimensions. The 9A-91 is one of the smallest assault rifles of the world. It's small size makes it maneuverable in a limited space areas. Pistol handle and a foregrip a made from polymer materials. Assault rifle is fed from 20 round capacity box magazine. Magazine release button is placed under the trigger guard. The 9A-91 is chambered for 9 x 39 mm special cartridges SP-5, SP-6 and PAB-9. These cartridges have subsonic speed and are intended to be used with a sound suppressor at a range of effective fire in 400 m. Recently such cartridges are used with the VSS "Vintorez" Special Purpose Sniper Rifle and the AS VAL Special Purpose Assault Rifle. The SP-5 was designed as a sniper cartridge and has better ballistic characteristics while the SP-6 has a hardened steel core intended to defeat manpower cowered by bullet-proof vests and light armored vehicles. The SP-6 is capable to penetrate 8-mm steel plate in 100 m range or 2-mm in 400 m range. The PAB-9 is a version of the SP-6 cartridge with a very similar characteristics but is more technological in production. One more detail is that these bullets usually do not ricochet. This feature makes them suitable to fire inside buildings. Worlds most common cartridges that used in silenced guns are 9 x 19 mm (Para) and .45ACP. When compared to them, SP-5 series loads gave twice as much muzzle energy and at least 3 times longer effective range. The 9A-91 Assault Rifle isn't well known in the Russian Army for the moment. The A-91 is completed with a sound suppressor and optionally with laser pointer, optical or night sight. urthermore it is compatible with the 40-mm GP-95 underbarrel grenade launcher developed especially for this assault rifle. It is more simple and cheap than the standard GP-25 or GP-30 underbarrel grenade launcher intended for the AK assault rifle family. The main GP-95 feature is it's smaller dimensions and ability to use standard VOG-25 and VOG-25M grenades. The GP-95 has a range of effective fire in 400 m.

AK-105 assault rifle (http://www.rusmilitary.com/images/ak-105%20(1).jpg)

The AK-105 was developed to change the AKS-74U small size assault rifle. It is built on well recommended Kalashikov's assault rifles scheme, that inherited all the best qualities threw more than 50 years during AK assault rifle families modernization. AK-105 is intended to use by secondary units such as supply, communication, tanks and artillery crews, staff personnel. It's predecessor was successfully used by Russian Federation ministry of internal affairs special forces in anti-terrorist, criminal arrest or other operations which required ordinary assault rifle with a smaller dimensions. AK-105 is suitable to be used by anti-terrorist special forces or airborne troops. The Weapon can be partially dismounted in a minute. Kalashnikv's construction weapons are easy in use and maintenance in case of measured and accurate construction. Soldiers all over the world prefer this easy construction of it's absolute reliability. Kalashnikov's weapon's usually don't misfire in any situations even fully immersed in mud or under the water. Chromed barrel make it available to use even in extremely low temperatures. In AK-105 modification shock-proof plastic has changed all laminated wood parts, used with AKS-74U assault rifle. New black color plastic has better weight and tightness characteristics. It cannot be affected by biological vermins and doesn't loose it's features even after a long storage. Assault rifle's curved box 30 rounds magazine is made from plastic, reinforced by fiberglass. The AK-105 has plastic folding butt stock. Last mentioned has a number of advantages comparing with metal frame butt stocks used with AKS-74U. Firstly it has even lighter weight then metal-one. Secondly it cannot be deformed in case of falling or hitting tight surfaces, what sometimes happened with earlier used metal frame butt stocks. Thirdly it has additional field toolkit placed inside. Furthermore new plastic stock is easier to use: it doesn't clings with equipment or uniform. The AK-105 can be used with a 40-mm underbarrel grenade launcher or knife-bayonet. Last mentioned is completed with the rifle. AK-105 has new, more effective flame-hider which lowers rifles tossing after each shot. Standard flame-hider can be replaced with onetime PBS sound suppressor, serving for about 30 shots. The muzzle of either weapon fits into the swiveling firing points of the standard Russian armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles. Thus, the infantryman can fire the weapon while the vehicle is moving.

The SAR-21 assault rifle was first publicly presented in 1999 at DSEi 99 defense exhibition. Assault rifle is recently used by Singapore Armed Forces as the main infantry assault rifle. In the future SAR-21 should fully replace recently used M16S1 automatic rifle (Singapore variant of the M16A1 automatic rifle), SAR-80 and SR-88 rifles. The SAR-21 assault rifle was developed by Singapore Technologies Kinetics company. It is also offered for export military and law enforcement sales. The assault rifle's developers obviously tried to join reliability of the AK rifles and fire accuracy of M-16 automatic rifle. Rifle is built on "bullpup" principle which gives it a number of advantages. The SAR-21 barrel's box is made from plastic polymer. The gun is comfortable to carry and fire. Like the Kalashnikov's assault rifles SAR-21 has a very few mechanisms. All of the major parts are connected together by a push-pins and can be disassembled in field condition during a minute without any tools. Rifle's reliability is equal to Kalashnikov's rifles reliability. That is to say it fires even after immersing it under the water or in the mud. Assault rifle does not requires precision care like M16 or the greatest part of the western countries rifles. These feature make rifle easy in maintenance. Standard rifles variant is fitted with 1.5x magnification optical sight built-in the carrying handle. However assault rifle is fitted with a simple opened sight mounted over the optical one. It is intended to use in close combat when optics isn't reasonable. Standard SAR-21 rifle has an interesting feature - it is fitted with laser aiming module (LAM). It is built-in inside the foregrip. It emits either visible or infrared beams. The LAM switch is built into the forearm of the rifle. The SAR-21 assault rifle can be fitted with knife-bayonet attached over the barrel or 40-mm underbarrel grenade launcher such as US M203 or Singapore CIS 40GL.

APS Underwater assault rifle (http://www.enemyforces.com/firearms/aps.jpg)

The APS was developed as a combat diver weapon intended as a personal weapon for usage under water mainly against the enemy divers. The APS Underwater Assault Rifle has a unique design which has no analogues except a later Russian developments of the improved underwater assault rifle. Russian Federation is the only country which combat divers are armed with the APS Assault Rifles currently. The weapon is produced by Tula city firearms plant. Overall the APS Special Assault Rifle has very much in common with the AK-74 Assault Rifle. However it has a lighter dimensions and weight comparing with the later mentioned assault rifle. Rifle fires 5.66 x 150 mm MPS or MPTS steel dart cartridges with a 120 mm length dart bullet. The MPTS cartridges are the tracer one. The bullet dart has a weight of 26 g and is stabilized under the water by a cavitation effect. On the air this bullet isn't stabilized. Combat diver armed with the APS is able to defeat even shark. On a usual fire trainings on the air the APS can fire a standard 5.45 x 39 mm Russian cartridges by changing it's smoothbore barrel into the rifled one chambered for the 5.45-mm. The Rifle is fitted with a 26 round magazine. The magazine has uncommon shape determined by a long cartridge. The magazine is divided into two sections to prevent cartridge reloading failures. Every APS is completed with two magazines and a knife-bayonet. Furthermore it has a folding inside the barrel box buttstock. The Underwater Assault Rifle is fitted with an opened triangle shape fixed sight. The underwater rifle has a depth of effective fire in 40 m. In the every depth a range of effective fire surpasses a range of visibility even in the clearest vision water obstacles. At a maximum range of effective fire the APS defeats combat diver wearing a hydro overall with filled with a foam thinner. It also proofs 5 mm wide organic plexiglas and defeats target covered by it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------M16A2 Assault rifle (http://www.navyseals.cz/webfoto/photo/foto_technika/palne_zbane/m16/m16a2-1.jpg)

The M16A2 semiautomatic rifle is the standard by which all military rifles of the future will be judged. This variant of the M16 fires a three-round burst in semiautomatic operation. The system incorporates an adjustable rear sight which corrects for both wind and elevation, a heavier barrel with 1-in-7 rifling, and a muzzle compensator to prevent muzzle climb during semiautomatic operation. The M16A2 is capable of firing all NATO standard 5.56mm ammunition and can fire 40mm grenades when equipped with the M203 Grenade Launcher.

The M16A2 replaced the M16A1 in U.S. Army service in 1983. It is essentially an improved M16A1. Major changes include: a switch from full automatic to 3-round burst capability; a heavier barrel; improved sights; new, stronger plastic buttstock, handguard, and pistol grip. The M16A2 has some practical features missing from the M16A1, found on the M4A1 -- the prime examples being the ability to rapidly breakdown the gun and fieldstrip, as well as the high metal parts content.

The M16A2 5.56mm rifle is a lightweight, air-cooled, gas-operated, magazine-fed, shoulder- or hip-fired weapon designed for either automatic fire (3-round bursts) or semiautomatic fire (single shot) through the use of a selector lever. The weapon has a fully adjustable rear sight. The bottom of the trigger guard opens to provide access to the trigger while wearing winter mittens. The upper receiver/barrel assembly has a fully adjustable rear sight and a compensator which helps keep the muzzle down during firing. The steel bolt group and barrel extension are designed with locking lugs which lock the bolt group to the barrel extension allowing the rifle to have a lightweight aluminum receiver.

The Colt Commando (sometimes referred to as the M-16A2 Commando) represents a modern CAR-15 design, it was created for Special Operations Personnel and or Government Agencies who needed a concealable but potent weapon. Designed in early --- the Commando is noticeably different from it's predecessor in the fact that it does not use a suppressor to mask it's muzzle flash. It is instead fitted with an A2 Model flash hider/compensator, this change does help the user control the climb of the weapon when fired but does little to reduce the large muzzle blast. It is distinguishal from the M4 due to the fact that it has no flash suppresor and a M16A2 carrying handle.

FN FNC assault rifle (http://www.silentheroes.se/media/handguns/AK5C.jpg)

Following the market failure of their previous 5.56mm caliber assault rifle, the CAL, famous Belgian company Fabrique Nationale began to develop the new assault rifle for 5.56mm NATO cartridge in the early 1970s. The final design, called the FNC (Fabrique Nationale Carbine) was produced circa 1978 and was consequently adopted by the Belgian Armed forces. It was also adopted by Sweden and Indonesia, and both those countries purchased the licenses to build more or less modified FNC carbines at their own facilities. The FNC is a sound design which accumulated best features from other famous designs, such as Kalashnikov AK-47, Colt/Armalite M16, and others. The receiver is made from two parts that are linked by two cross-pins. The receiver could be opened for disassembly and maintenance by removing the rear pin, so the parts could be hinged around the forward pin (which also can be removed to separate receiver parts). Upper receiver is made from stamped steel, the lower receiver, along with magazine housing, is made from aluminum alloy. Barrel of the FNC is equipped with flash hider which also served as a rifle grenade launcher. FNC is equipped with side-folding buttstock, made of steel and covered by plastic. A solid, non-folding plastic butt is available as an option. The pistol handle and the forend are made from plastic. FNC is equipped with sling swivels and can be fitted with special bayonet or with adapter for US M7 knife-bayonet. FNC can be fed from any STANAG (NATO standard) compliant magazine, and issued with 30 rounds magazines. If required, FNC could be fitted with 4X telescope sight or various IR / night vision sights.

Steyr ACR (http://anime.mipt.ru/fan-art/nge-weapons/images/steyr-acr-2.jpg)

The Steyr ACR was built as an attempt to revive the fleschette ammunition concept, first tried in the 1960s during US Army SPIW program. In 1960s, the fleschette concept was a failure. In 1990s, it was much more sucessful, but not enough to be worth of total rearming to the new infantry weapon system. Steyr ACR is built around a specially designed cartridge of nominal caliber of 5.56mm. This cartridge has simple, cylindrically shaped plastic case. The fleschette, or dart, is totally enclosed in the case. Fleschette diameter is about 1.5 mm (.06 inch), lenght is about 41 mm (1.6 inch), weight 0.66 gramm (10 grains). Fleschette is partially enclosed into discarding sabot, and leaves the muzzle at impressive velocity of 1450 meters per second (4750 fps), still retaining velocity of 910 m/s (2980 fps) at the range of 600 meters. The plastic case had no rim or extracting groove, and priming compound is located annually at the inside wall of the case. To fire such uncommon cartridge, Steyr ACR has equally uncommon design. Barrel of nominal caliber of 5.56mm, has a very slow rifling to give initial stabilisation to the fleschette, which is stabilised in flight by its own small fins. Instead of common linear-moving bolt, Steyr ACR have separate chamber (breech block), which can be moved up and down. The whole action is powered by gas drive, which has annual gas piston, located around the barrel. This quite comprehensive action was concealed in sleek and comfortable polymer case with AUG-styled pistol grip and large ventilated upper rib with fixed sights. Optical sights also were fitted. Due to extremely high projectile velocity, flight time was very short at any practical ranges, and trajectory was wery flat, giving the shooter almost ray-gun performance, which allowed to fire withouth prior calculations of point of impact - speaking simply, at any practical combat ranges shooter will hit where it aimed, regardless target movements (projectile flight time to the target at 300 meters is about 0.2 seconds). Due to high velocity, Steyr ACR has good killing power and armour piercing capablities, and due to the low weight of the projectile recoil is low.

FN SCAR-L (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/ar15wyoming/SCARLight.jpg)

The US Special Operations Command (US SOCOM) issued a solicitation for the procurement of SOF Combat Assault Rifles (SCAR) on October 15th, 2003. This solicitation requested a new combat rifle, specially tailored for the current and proposed future needs of the US Special Forces, which are somewhat different from latest generic US Army requirements, which are being fulfilled by the newest Heckler-Koch XM8 assault rifle. The key idea of SCAR rifle system is that it will provide the Special Forces operators with wide variety of options, from short-barreled 5.56mm SCAR-L CQC variation, tailored for urban close combat, and up to long range 7.62x51 SCAR-H Sniper variant, as well as 7.62x39 SCAR-H, which will accept "battlefield pickup" AK-47/AKM magazines with 7.62 M43 ammunition, available during the operations behind the enemy lines. Both SCAR-L and SCAR-H shall be initially available in three versions, Standard (S), Close Quarters Combat (CQC) and Sniper Variant (SV). All these variants, regardless the caliber and exact configuration, will provide the operator with the same controls layout, same handling and maintenance procedures, and same optional equipment, such as sights, scopes, and other current and future attachments. SCAR-L rifle will use improved M16-type magazines. The trigger unit with ambidextrous safety-fire mode selector switch will allow for single shots and full automatic fire, apparently with no provisions for limited-length bursts mode. The charging handle could be easily installed on either side of the weapon, so the upper receiver has respective cuts on both sides. Top of the upper receiver is covered by the full-length integral Picatinny rail (MIL-STD 1913); additional Picatinny rails are mounted on both sides and below the handguards. Side-folding polymer buttstock is adjustable for length of pull, and is shaped to proved positive cheek rest. SCAR rifles are fitted with removable, adjustable iron sights, with folding diopter-type rear sight on the receiver rail, and folding front sight on the gas block. Any additional type of sighting equipment, necessary for current tasks, including telescope and night sights, can be installed using MIL-STD 1913 compatible mounts.

FAMAS assault rifle (http://home.comcast.net/~gunglossary/img/famas.jpg)

This rifle has the G1-style enlarged trigger guard but can accept only STANAG type (M16-compatible) magazines. It was adopted and purchased by the French Navy in the 1995, with the French Army soon following the suit, and also offered for export. At the present time the slightly upgraded FAMAS G2 rifle is used as a platform for the future FELIN system (a French counterpart to the US "Land Warrior" programme), which incorporates a various electronic sights and sensors, connected to the soldier carried equipment, like the helmet mounted displays, ballistic and tactical computers etc. The FAMAS rifles seen some action during the operation "Desert Storm" in Kuwait in 1991, as well as in some peace-keeping operations in the mid and late 1990s, and proved itself as a reliable and trustworthy weapons. The FAMAS assault rifles are built using the bullpup layout, with the magazine housing behind the pistol grip and trigger. The gun is built around the compact receiver, which is enclosed in the plastic housing. FAMAS is one of the relatively rare systems that uses a lever delayed blowback action, borrowed from the French AAT-52 machine gun, but originally invented by the Hungarian designer Paul de Kiraly prior to the Second World War, and improved by the Paul Tellie for the FAMAS rifle. The sighting system of the FAMAS consists of the blade front and the diopter rear sight, adjustable for range and with two flip-up apertures, for good visibility and low light conditions. Both sights are mounted on the pillars, that are in turn mounted on the receiver, and concealed by the large plastic carrying handle. The carrying handle has the provisions for mounting a Weaver or Picatinny-style sight bases. A special receivers also available with the integral sights base instead of the carrying handle.

AR-18 Assault rifle (http://www.classicairsoft.net/images/ar-182.jpg)

The AR-18 rifle had been developed by the Armalite company (USA) by the George Sullivan, Arthur Miller and Charles Dorchester in the early 1960s. This rifle was designed for the international military market as a replacement for the AR-15 project, which had been sold to the Colt in 1959 by the Armalite's parent company, Fairchild Aircraft and Engine Corp. The AR-18 was designed as a competitor to the AR-15, which could be made at much less expenses and on simplified machinery, with the view to sell the manufacturing licenses for AR-18 to the third world countries. The AR-18 was a really successful design from a technical standpoint, but it come out too late to compete with both officially accepted and adopted AR-15/M16 rifle of American origin and already widespread AK-47 rifle of the Soviet origin. The Armalite company by itself made very few specimens of this rifle. The AR-18 is a gas operated, magazine fed, air cooling selective fire rifle. The receiver is made from stamped sheet steel and consists of two parts - upper and lower. Both halves of the receiver are hinged one to another at the front of the receiver. The upper and lower parts are interlocked by the rear ends of the bolt carrier guide rods. AR-18 is field stripped by pressing the guide rods forward by the special lever at the rear of the receiver, then by the folding the lower receiver down and forward. The controls consist of the trigger, safety - fire mode selector at the left side of the receiver (similar to one found on AR-15 / M16 type rifles), and the bolt stop. The available fire modes are single shots and full auto. The forearm, the pistol grip and the buttstock are made from black plastic. The buttstock folds to the side to save the space, if required, and AR-18 can be fired with butt folded. The sling attachment points are located on the barrel, just ahead of the forearm, and at the butt of the pistol grip, so the sling position is not affected by the position of the foldable buttstock. The sights consist of the hooded front post and the "L"-shaped flip-up diopter rear, also protected from sides by large "dog ears". Each AR-18 also was fitted with the scope mount at the top of the receiver by standard. To sum it up it is a cheap alternate to the M16A3.

The SIG SG.550 assault rifle had been developed by Swiss company SIG as a competitor for Swiss Army assault rifle contest in 1979 - 1980. SIG 550 had been derived from previous model SIG 540 and SIG 541, and was adopted as a Stgw.90 assault rifle in 1983, but due to financial reasons production began only in 1986. Currently, the Stgw.90 is a standard Swiss service rifle and also offered for export. Basically, the SIG-550 is a somewhat lightened and refined SIG-540/541 rifle. SIG-550 featured AK-47 style action, gas operated, with gas piston attached to the bolt carrier, and with rotating bolt with two massive lugs. The rifle is equipped with semi-translucent plastic magazines that can be clamped toghether for faster reloading.

FN P-90 Sub machine gun (http://www.cubic-works.com/marui/images/P90.jpg)

The FN P90 submachine gun (SMG) was developed in the late 1980s as a defensive weapon for the troops whose primary activities does not include small arms - vehicle and tank crew members, artillery crews etc. Standart pistols and SMGs chambered for pistol rounds were proved ineffective against enemy soldiers, wearing armour (bulletproof) vests, so FN Herstal developed a new round with enhanced penetration - the SS190. This round looks like scaled downt 5.56mm NATO round and forces the pointed, steel core bullet to the 600-700 meters per second at the muzzle, thus being capable to defeat standart CRISAT helmets and armour vests at reasonable distances (50-100 meters). The P90 is a blowback operated, selective fire weapon. It is fed from 50-rounds box magazines, made from transluscent polymer. The magazine is being located above the barrel, with the cartridges being aligned at 90 degrees to the barrel axis. Each magazine has built-in ramp that rotates cartridge to align it with the barrel prior to chambering it. The P90 controls are completely ambidextrous, with charging handles located at the both sides of the weapon, and the safety/fire mode selector is located below the trigger. The P90 also features downward ejection of the spent cases. P90 is built in bull-pup configuration, with polymer stock, and features built-in reflex collimator sight with 1X magnification and reticle automaticaly ajustable to the light level, as well as a set of the backup open sights. P90 may be equipped with special silencer, that should be used with special, sub-sonic variant of the 5.7x28mm cartridge. P90 may be referred as a forerunner of the PDW (Personal Defence Weapon) concept, that arose in last 4 or 5 years.

Specter M4 Sub machine gun (http://www.mfiap.com/spectre1.jpg)

The Spectre SMG was developed by Italian company SITES in the mid-1980s. Spectre was designed primarily for close combat, anti-terror or police operations that require compact size, instant firepower at the short ranges and safety of operations. Spectre is a recoil operated, automatic firearm. It fires from the closed bolt, an is a hammer-fired. The trigger group is more similar to handguns, than to SMG - it is Double Action without manual safety but with decocker. So, Spectre could be carried with loaded chamber and hammer down and then fired immediately simply by pressing the trigger. The receiver of the Spectre is made from stamped steel. The bolt is so designed that it acts as an air pump to push air through barrel shroud and provide aditional cooling for the barrel and action (very useful when firing long bursts). Spectre has top-folding stock and polymer forward handle. It uses high-capacity, four column magazines for increased firepower. For anyone who has ever played goldeneye for n64, this is the named phantom in the game.

H&K UMP sub machine gun (http://www.scottsdalegunclub.com/mga_machineguns/mgphotos/UMP_left.jpg)

The UMP (Universal Machinen-Pistole = Universal Submachine Gun) had been developed by the Heckler & Koch company of Germany in the mid- to late- 1990s and first appeared on the markets in 1999. The key idea behind the UMP was to ceate lightweight and powerful submachine gun, that also will be cheaper than one of the H&K's flagships, the MP-5. The UMP is a blowback-operated select-fire submachine gun, being fired from the closed bolt. The receiver is made from the polymer, the controls are fully ambidextrous. UMP can be fired in full-auto, in single shots, and in 2 or 3 round bursts (optional). UMP also has bolt hold-open device, which traps the bolt in the open position when the last round from magazine had been fired. UMP has side-folding buttstock and two set of picatinny rails - one on the top of the receiver, and the other - on the forend. These rails can accept wide variety of sighting and other equipment, such as red-dot sights, laser pointers, tactical grips and flashlights. The barrel has quick mount for snap-on silencer.

Calico sub machine gun (http://images.gunsamerica.com/upload/976575338-1.jpg)

The Calico submachine guns are somewhat mysterious and quite notorious in both design, concept and appearance. The key properties of Calico firearms were extremely large magazine capacity combined with slim profile and ambidextrous handling. First designs, introduced by the US based company Calico Light Weapon Systems (LWS) circa 1990, were intended for both Law Enforcement and Military markets. The 9mm Calico submachine guns are delayed blowback operated, selective fire weapons. The action is based on the two part, roller delayed blowback bolt system, initially designed by Ludwig Vorgrimler at the Mauser Werke by the end of WW2, and latter refined and promoted by the Heckler & Koch company in its G3 series rifles and MP5 series submachine guns. One interesting feature of Calico submachine guns is that the spent cases are ejected straight down, through the ejection chute at the front of the trigger guard. This, along with the ambidextrous safety / selector switch, located at the front of the trigger guard, make the gun ambidextrous, but bottom ejection caused danger to the shooter in the case of improper two-hands grip - if the supporting hand will come too close to the trigger guard, ejected cases can cause burns and damage to the holding palm. The charging handle is located at the left side of the gun, just ahead and above the trigger, and does not move when gun is fired. It also must be pointed out, that the .22LR versions of the Calico guns have the ejection port at the right side of the receiver, above the pistol grip. The most interesting feature of the Calico firearms is the top-mounted, cylindrical magazine of impressive capacity. Made mostly of plastics, this magazine contains a helical guide grooves at its "inner" cylindrical wall, with the rotating central "follower", that causes the cartridges to follow the helical track inside the cylinder. The follower is operated by the spiral spring, located at the rear of the cylinder. Magazine is equipped with winding handle, so it can be stored loaded and with unwound spring, to avoid loss of spring tension during the storage time. When required, magazine spring could be quickly wound up by rotating the handle to prepare magazine for fire. Magazines for Calico guns can store 50 or 100 rounds in relatively compact packages.

SA-80 Carbine assault rifle (http://royalmarines.mine.nu/library/sa80.jpg)

The SA80 fires the 5.56 mm NATO round from a 30-round box magazine, and can mount the SUSAT (Sight Unit; Small Arms; Trilux), a 4x optical sight with a tritium-powered glowing pointer for limited night sighting as well as the CWS (Common Weapon Sight) - a ultraviolet night sight. The weapon is designed in the bull-pup configuration with pistol grip foward of the magazine and the mechanism in the butt. This allows the use of a long, accurate barrel in a weapon with compact dimensions. The long barrel results in a particulary high muzzle velocity for an assault rifle. Combined with the free-floating nature of the heavy barrel and the optical performance of the SUSAT, this gives the weapon excellent accuracy. The Carbine has a barrel shortened by about 1 foot (300 mm). The forward hand guard (which would be below the barrel) has therefore been replaced by a grip as used on other short barreled weapons. It is widley disliked and praised.

UZI sub machine gun (http://www2.stopthenra.com/images/guns/uzi_2.gif)

The Uzi works on free lock's recoil principle. Fire is executed when lock is still moving ahead. Reloading handle is placed on the barrels box what makes submachine gun comfortable reload from right or left hand. During firing it stays stable. The Uzi executes single or automatic fire. Safety-lock plays role of fire changer's switch at once. The Submachine gun is outstanding in high safety level. An additional automatic safety-lock is placed in pistol handle. It turns on only when weapon is properly held. The Automatic safety-lock blocks trigger and lock. Turning reloading handle backward in 175 mm it won't return to initial position while it won't be pulled backward in 80 mm more. It works as one more safety-lock blocking weapons lock. The magazine is inserted in pistol handle what increases weapons stability and allows to fire from one hand furthermore it makes weapon well balanced.
