Geography and Climate:
Maineiacs is a large newly independent nation. Total area is 4.3 million sq. mi.(11.2 million sq. km.), including nearly 300,000 sq. mi. (977,000 sq. km.) of fresh water. Maineiacs consists of forests and hills to the east and grssy plains to the west, with tundra covering the north, particularly Nunavut and Kallaalit Nunaat(Greenland) provinces. Much of the coast is rocky and indented, but less so south of Cape Cod. Higest point is Mt. Maineiacs (Harney Peak, SD) at 7242 ft. (2207 m)
Climate is continental with subtropical in the south and Arctic or sub-Arctic in the north, with greater extremes of temperature in interior areas. Avg. highs in Maineacs City (NYC), in the southern coast range from 3C in January to 30C in July. In Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut province, the range is -22C to 11C while in Winnipeg in the prairies of western Ontario province, the range is -11C to 27C and in Wichita, in Dakota province, the range is 3C to 34C Temperatures in Charlseton, Carolina province average 14C to 33C. Record high is 50C in Alton and Steele, record low is -64C in Northice.
Economy:
The economy of Maineiacs has traditionally been dominated by the logging, fishing, and mining industries, but the socialist government has placed these industries under state control, and the economy has since diversified, not only expanding agriculture, but also to the auto manufacturing and a limited, but growing, textile industry. Since the introduction of legalized gambling in 1995, tourism receipts have skyrocketed. Per capita GDP is $10,561.70. Unemployment stands at 8.03%. Price controls keep a lid on inflation, for the most part. Currency is the Energy Credit (ECr) exchanging at a rate of 1ECr=$0.51US. Taxes are high, averaging 72%, but progressive.
Government:
Maineiacs has a representative form of government, with a strong devotion to democratic ideals. The legislature (called the Senate) is a unicameral body of 600 members elected by popular vote every two years, with a limit of 5 terms. The President is elected to a four year term with a limit of two terms. No one who has served as President may run for further office, nor may anyone who has served 5 terms as Senator. There are several political parties in Maineiacs. The ruling Social Democrats have been in power since 1991,In the 2006 Congessional elections the New Democrats gained a narrow plurality, and through an alliance with the Reform
Party, gained majority status. President Anderson McDermott has been in office since 2001 and is not eligble to run again. Due to their history of occupation by a foreign fascist dictatorship, there are no truly "Right-wing" parties. The Reformist Party would most likely be considered centrist by most other countries' standards. The Socialists are far-left, while the New Democrats are center-left. Right wing parties (other than the Fascist Party) are neither banned nor regulated or watched in any way, but there seems little supprt for conservatism among the population. The main differences between the parties lies in their devotion to a free market. The Social Democrats have nationalized most industry, the Socialists favor nationalizing agirculture, while the SD's do not, the New Democrats would leave only mining under state control (while loosening regulation on other industries), the Reformists favor a free market economy. in recent elections, the SD's poll about 60% of votes cast, the ND's about 30%, the Socialists and Reformists usually get about 5% each, the former because of fears they might curtail personal freedoms, the latter because of concerns that unregulated industry would harm the environment. With the addition on new territory purchased from MHDP, Congressional apportionment was redrawn. By province: Nunavut 3, Kallaaliit Nunaat 3, Newfoundland 4, Quebec 25, Acadia 8, Ontario 44, Aroostook 12, Plymouth 36, Allegheney 128, Potomac 52, Carolina 41, Cumberland 33, Ohio 146, Superior 45, Dakota 20. By party the split is: Social Democrats 210, New Democrats 223 Reformist 146 Socialist 31. Reapportionment has more than tripled the seat of the relatively right-wing Reform party. The high unemployment was an issue for opposition parties in the 2004 and 2006 elections. Due in part to the high tax rate, Maineiacs enjoys sizeable budget surpluses ($168.1 billion in FY 2005-2006). With the opening of foreign trade, the country has a trade deficit of $229.1 million. Most of the budget goes to Social Welfare, Education, and Health care, which is free and universal. the military budget is kept relatively small by law.

History:
The area now know as Maineiacs was largely uninhabited when Euopeans first arrived in the late 17th century. Immigration to the area was light until the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Asian and African immigration came in the mid to late 19th century. Indeed, sovereignty was disputed until the 20th century. In 1930, the nation of Wottsamattayou, a Fascist dictatorship looking to carve out a name for itself in the Fascist expansion of the era, invaded, easily driving out the divided colonial powers. More than 45 years of occupation followed during which Wottsamattan authorities ruled with an iron fist, as they did over their own people. The Wottsamattans began a widespread industrialization that basically enslaved the Maineiacs, and did serious ecological damage. The drive toward an indeoendent Maineiacs began in 1974 in a rather unusal fashion. Maineiacs resistance was born at, of all places, a rock concert. The band The Flying Lemurs held a concert in Mainieacs City in the summer of '74. Several of their songs were political in nature. When Wottsamattan troops tried to stop the concert, the crowd, already riled up by the blatantly anti-occupation music, rioted. Wottsamattayou then began a brutal crackdown resisted, mostly peacefully, by the newly-formed Maineiacs Liberation Front. World opinion turned sharply against Wottsamattayou after the 1975 massacre on the campus of Maineiacs University in Maineiacs City. Wottsamattan troops killed four students, and injured several more. Protests continued to grow, and independence was achieved in 1978. The revolt had the unintended result of toppling the Wottsamattan government, from which that country has never fully recovered. Meanwhile, Wottsamattayou's rapid industrialization of Maineiacs, although it caused ecological damage that is still being repaired, gave Mainieiacs a far stronger infrastructure and economic base than most countries of similar age, and is largley responsible for Maineiacs' "economic miracle".
