Contemplating RolePlay

Hi there, I've been on the forums for two years roleplaying on Western Europe forum exclusively, and while thats all well and good, I thought it may be fun to do some RPing in the big wide world. I have some questions before I make that kind of time committment, though. Sorry if some of these are obvious.

1. I have a population of over five billion concentrating mostly on education. Would it be wrong of me to play and advanced space-faring civilisation?

2. If I play non-human, would I be able to balance, say, greater peace of mind and general intelligence with disabilities in other areas, for instance less ability at military planning and a weaker constitution and stomach for fighting?

3. How much non-war stuff goes on in space-tech areas?

4. Where would be a good, remote place to put a few Dyson Spheres?

5. What is the general level of tech among sci-fi worlds?

Thanks for the help.

1. I'm a highly asdvanced space-faring civilisation, on here knock yourself out, just about anything goes as far as what you are and what your tech level is.

2. Alot of people don't even give themselves disadvantages, just have quality ove quantity militaries, but disadvantages are one way to go if you think it's a good idea.

3. Plenty, it gets overlooked alot because some people are hyper-agressive and always start wars in the non-war topics but theres plenty of stuff that doesnt start wars at all.

4. Dyson Spheres, what's that?

5. unknown, alot use WH40K or SW tech, but some use other, like my Honorverse and Prince Rioger tech, or my Terran Diminion stuff(from starcraft), there's even just plain made up stuff with no origination to it except the persons head, but I'd say WH40K and SW make up the bulk of it.

Heylo Keoii...

1. Nope not at all.

2. You could do that even with human.

3. Not as much as war stuff, but it depends on the forum. II is usually more warlike than NS.

4. Your own star system somewhere in the galaxy - preferably made up, as people get touchy about claiming "real" ones and you'd have to build separate realities just to make it work. Although I have to say Dyson Spheres are considered a bit wanky by some.

5. Varies enormously, from early spacefaring with reaction mass vessels to Star Wars fantasy tech and ships (and yes, multi-kilometer star destroyers o' doom).

Thats fine. Many people play future-tech around here. Just don't expect the modern-techers to have much to do with you. Although to balance this out, you could play one modern version and one future version, all in the same nation if you want to have 5 billion people in both.

2. If I play non-human, would I be able to balance, say, greater peace of mind and general intelligence with disabilities in other areas, for instance less ability at military planning and a weaker constitution and stomach for fighting?

Sounds good to me, although making them OMG superintelligent with super technological powers might not be the best way to make friends and influence people.

3. How much non-war stuff goes on in space-tech areas?

Quite a bit, as long as you like first contact RPs. That said, there are quite a few peace talks, trade etc., you just have to look.

4. Where would be a good, remote place to put a few Dyson Spheres?

Dyson Spheres probably aren't worth it, and would most likely be impossible for even a nation the size of yours. Still, if you really can't resist, just make up your own star system and give it a cool name.

5. What is the general level of tech among sci-fi worlds?

Many people base theirs off Star Wars or WH40k, and a few use Battletech or Star Trek. This part is really up to you. However, if you want to have universe-destroying devices, time travel etc, don't expect people to RP with you.

Will someone please explain what a Dyson Sphere is?

Its what happens when a n00b discovers science fiction. ;)

Well, actually, its a big shell built around a star. I think its for harnessing the energy of said star, but I'm not sure about that one.

Thanks for all the advice so far! Its really great.

As far as tech goes, my plan had been to balance it off, for instance, my civilisation may have advanced propulsion systems and may make use of advanced biological and nanotech starships, but balances it up by lagging behind in military technology.

Dyson Spheres may be a bit iffy, admittedly, I can't see a few Dyson Trees going amiss though. While advanced technologically, they are also highly sustainable and in keeping with the general symbiotic culture that I'm trying to come up with here.

I already do play Keoii as a modern tech nation in Western Europe, I'm hoping to branch out a bit.

Wow, someone besides me has actually read Pandora's Star! :D

Amazing book, I can't wait until the sequel comes out.

I'm reading Pandoras star... and it's not the only sci-fi to have one. in all possibility, Keoii has never heard of it. Or has. I'm just trying to clear that up if you didn't know.

1: No, absolutely not.. but culture (Iain M Banks) far might be a bit too much if it was to apply militarily. of course you've already made it clear this won't be true.

2: of course, it's freeform.

3: Plenty, but NS is more peacable than II

4: I personally disagree with dyson spheres, but I did build a halo the size of Russia. It took me 7-9 RL months though. Your call. The most common counter is, "what's stopping you building an equivalent fleet just as quickly?

5:Varies Entirely. Jordaxia is a backwater civ based on pluto, with very slow FTL, no mythical elements, no shields, and quite industrial, but with excellent mass-production techniques to allow me to compete. Some people play ST, some people play SW, and WH40K. It's your choice. I just feel more attached to my own creations.

1> no, go right ahead
2> of course, my own people have an tendancy to become so focused on a goal, they will act irrationally, like attack a star destroyer head on in a small cargo ship.
3> depends on the area, earth space rarely has any armed conflict larger than a duel, but some gaxies are hotbeds of military activity

4> I do have a star system in the galaxy of Transylvania that would be ideal, an average main-sequence star, and no orbiting bodies larger than a volvo.

5> the level varies widely, SW,ST, andWH4k are popular for space vessels, ground is the same, plus Halo, and Battletech, although Gundam also had it's adherents.
