In the fields of outer space, and in other landscapes, the tank is simply not enough. Indeed, hybrid tanks/powered armor suits are a step up, but nonetheless, they do suffer from a degree of complexity of manufacture. The step has been taken to begin development of pure Powered Armor suits for Infantry Support and dealing with potential biological threats, like any sort of "Bug" type species.

Therefore, the Shirow Design Bureau has been commissioned to manufacture the new Kurosawa-class Infantry Support suit; this will enter service soon.

OOC: D00d. Those suits rule PreFT. Unlike so many weirdnesses that people put up here, those look feasible.

OOC: Thanks. PreFT, that is Future Tech, right?

OOC: Nope, it's the lower-tech phase of exploration and discovery that all civilisations must progress through before expanding beyond their own solar system. They might have rudimentary hyper/warp/bistromathic drives, but the universe is still a big, dangerous, unmapped place. Think Star Trek Enterprise.

OOC: I think I might be lightyears ahead of Enterprise in tech (I have antimatter engines, whatnot), but I still have a lot of exploration to do, so I fall somewhere in there, though not so neatly as described.

To make it truly FT, what would it need?

OOC: A ship the size of a small moon, capable of wiping out any primitive civilisations that you might encounter on your campaign of galactic conquest, or a virus that kills basically every organic thing it touches. That, or the same stuff, but with a mission of Galactic Peace (TM). Seriously, you'd get to a point and you just don't care about alien life any more, it'd be like fumigating a new house.
EDIT: That's why PreFT is actually fun.

OOC: No, as in the suit itself, what can make it really FT?

OOC: I knew you were referring to the suit, I was merely stating the fact that a sufficiently advanced civilisation would have evolved beyond the need for ground warfare, rather resorting to the extermination of all planetary life followed by colonisation. Planet Hopping.
But as for additions to the suit? I would recommend wrist-mounted weaponry, a direct neural link, and some sort of kinetic shielding. Keep it to slug-throwers, though. They're much more fun than lasers.

OOC: Made some changes, added a defense shield (energy based) and shifted the position to the wrist for the 2x arm MG-3s. Neural link is a bit away yet, but we could release a special version for Force users (like our People's Acolytes).

Those are like small mech suits, kind of like Elementals in Mech Assault.

It's all about the Brotherhood of Steel powered armor!

OOC: How much do you reckon for a PMT prototype (No laspistol, no shield)? I'm working my way through the times, and this looks like a good jump.

OCC: DO is right though those are more like mini-mechs than powered armor. Though the fact that I have some of my SF armor based directly off BoS armor stands as my little tribute to the best game serries in history. And god now I want to go and dig out my old copy of Fallout Tactics and hound my uncle for his Fallout 1 & 2 games.

OOC: Well, the guy who ran Trooper PX (a Starship Troopers fansite) classed these as Powered Armor.

Usually, I thought Mechs were like 50-60ft stuff, Powered Armor was the big, bulky stuff (like in the Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles TV Series), Powered Suits were more man portable contraptions, like the BoS stuff. Perhaps I might be wrong.....

OOC: I'm guessing those things could be classed as heavy or ultra heavy powered armor. So you might just have to throw in that classification and they could be considered powered armor. Then again first gen power armor would probably be bulky and more like mini-mechs than armor. Like in the Halo book Fall of Reach they describe first gen power armor to be bulky and massive lumbering things.

OOC: My thoughts exactly...this is like the stuff in Starship Troopers, Heinlein described his suits as 2,000lb "gorillas."
