The Spirit of Change...

Spolotikopia

Today, Prime Minister Harold Lombardi made an official statement regarding the recent country-wide demonstrations recently.

"This country will not go to war; we will not do anything. The Spolotikopians must keep their heads straight. We simply do not have enough money, or enough of an army to carry out what these people wish for."

Apparently, the Spolotikopians have been caught up ina rush of political fervor. For years, Spolotikopia has never had any major events to become involved in, to voice their opinions in. In fact, not since the early days of the progressive Party has there been such action. Where is the Progressive Party of old, the party of a ction, of youthful determination? Almost all of the Progressive Senators and Parliamentarians have sided with the Prime Minister on this one.

The rest of Spolotikopia, however, is outraged over the statement. The battle over this will rage on; the people fighting in demonstrations, and the leaders fighting in Congress.

"We must not stand idly by, while others suffer!" proclaims young Progressive Senator Julius Mann.

"The Progressive Party is dead." says Patriot Party chairman Ralph Ken.

"Impeach now!" is the rallying cry of Liberal Congresspeople. The Liberal Party ahs urged the Senate and Parliament to begin a week-long meeting about the situation.

Patriot and Liberal Party leaders are expected to begin long speeches railing against Lombardi and the Progressives. Julius Mann is sure to be on the floor much of the time. He has promised that his county, the most liberal county in Spolotikopia's voice be heard.

Protestors have indeed begun to urge for an impeachment of the Prime Minister; insisting that he has infringed on the most important freedom of speech by not listening to his people. Many doubt that this is possible, but with the atmosphere of people these days, who knows?

-The next week-

The demonstrations have become enormous, disrupring daily life in Spolotikopia. Men, women, and children have taken to the streets, some because of SuperVegeta, some to urge the impeachment of Lombardi, and some just because they have finally found a cause. Of course, the Teachers Union has called a national srike, though we are unsure of the relationship of the strike to recent events.

Up in Congress, many leaders have emerged. The arguments seem to be leaning in favor of the anti-Progressives, anti-SVs, and anti-Lombardis. Julius Mann continues to urge for action to be taken against the Vegetans, becoming a major force in the Senate.

Many Liberal Party leaders have bceom vibrant forces. Could they become the new Progressive Party? They certainly have the potential. Especially the other new Senator in Norlanse, Pete Langlin. He proclaims Spolotikopia's need for a new party; the Liberal party, for an impeachment, for action to be taken.

The Conservative Party has remained surprisingly quiet in all of this.

After a week, Congress has issued a statement:

We, the senators and Parliamentarians of the Spolotikopian people, bring un ultimatum before Prime Minister Harold Lombardi: Either step down from your position; or face going through the impeachment process.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Prime Minister's Office. Norlanse, Spolotikopia.

Harold Lombardi sat at his desk, his head in his hands, a paper from Congress before him.

"I can't believe this country. What have I done wrong? What?"

He looked up and out the window in front of him; getting a view of the Norlanse skyline. Lombardi couldn't understand what had driven Spolotikopia to go crazy over the past month. Yes, many peole wanted action taken against SuperVegeta, but riots? Demonstrations? That teachers strike? Even now, Lombardi could see a group of protestors in front of his window out on the lawn, telling him to "Be smart- step down now!"

"Impeachment? Are they mad? Even Congress is going crazy. Not just the normal people. I'm having my Prime Ministry stolen right out from under my nose."

Someone had caused this. Some power-hungry people snowballed everything in order to bring him down. But why? He was a veteran. He had served his country well.

The Liberals. It was them and the Patriots. They hijacked the whole situation. I can't belive this. I just can't belive this."

Lombardi pulled out a pen and paper from his desk drawer.

The Prime Minister's Manor. Norlanse, Spolotikopia

The sun was shining. Birds chirped as the wind billowed between the white tablelocthes draped over the Prime Minister's Manor's porch. Blue and white balloons were held by many in the teeming crowd before the Manor, and the great Spolotikoopian flag flew elegantly over the heads of the people. The anticipation could be sensed rippling throughout the crowd, as they awaited their new Prime Minister to adress them. One could feel the tension and curiosity among the teeming people; all wondering, "What will he be like? Can he unify us? Can he handle the situation? Is he on our side?" The only things they knew of this person were from the news reports. Whoever it was would need strength to handle the new events. Everything was changed. The Progressive Party was as good as defunct, and there was a new political fervor in the nation.

Suddenly, all was quiet. The Spolotikopian anthem bagen to play, as the youthful, smiling senator walked up the stairs to the dais. He began to speak, and all listened in rapt attention.

"My Spolotikopians, it is a privilege and an honor to be able to stand before you today, and call myself the Prime Minister of Spolotikopia. It is a proud and glorious people I lead today. Where else can the average citizen name for you all of the major events in Spolotikopian history off the top of his head, and then be kind enough to direct you to the nearest good restaurant?"

With that, there were a few chuckles. The crowd began to smile, and continued to listen to the speech of this light-hearted, intelligent, (and idealistic, as the crowd would later see from his speech) man.

"Thank you, people of Spolotikopia."

At the end of his long speech, the people erupted in thunderous applause. Julius Mann beamed as the all around him he could see people clapping, with smiles on their face, and a new song in their heart. He had truly captured the hearts and minds of a nation.

Today, New Cimmeria and Saterno both declared war on SuperVegeta, an act that was considered by many to be the breaking point of the veiled pre-war tension, and an act that many say will be the start of a long and bloody war. The Spolotikopias urged Prime Minister Mann to take action, soem saying he must follow fellow Nasicournians in declaring war. This time, though, they did not urge through protests, for they trust Mann to listen to them, after his remarkable presentation last week.

In other news, Mann called a Senate meeting, in which he appealed to the Senate to start a "Peace Corps" that would go around and help others in need during these difficult times. Mann reasoned that until Spoltoikopia built up the military prowess, striving for peace is all we can do. He also is a firm believer in trying all means to avert war before using the final resort of war. He is widely expected to appeal to Parliament tomorrow, after the Senate ends voting.

SBN News

Today, Socialist Western Remlin had a military coup. Details are skecthy, but there is talk of genocide.

In other news, the Senate finished voting for the Prime Minister's Peace Corps, with 97 yays and 23 nays. Speaker for Parliament Patricia Almo began appealing to them for the President's plan as well yesterday, and it was also passed.

The President plans to get his Peace Corps up and running as fast as possible to aid in hotspots of turmoil. His next step, he says, is too begin diverting money into the military.

Today, there was a rally in front of the Capital to show our support for those in Socialist Remlin who are in need. We stand with them, and pray for them.

The United Kingdom welcomes the democratic approach taken to government as exemplified in Spolotikopia. In honour of their committment to the ideas and believes of democracy, this government would welcome the chance to open official diplomatic relations with your nation in the interest of expanding both parties' knowledge of the complex world often fraught with peril. We hope that such understanding will lead our two nations towards resolving any differences that may arise in a peaceful fashion.

Parliament, Imperium

Emily Deveraux now found herself standing before Parliament, her prepared remarks hidden by the podium behind which she stood – her arms and legs no longer unsteady as they had been prior to her career as a politician. Meanwhile, she kept aware of the news media, which would of course focus on her shapely form, and her form-fitting top and blouse in addition to ankle length black skirt. With a slight cough she clearer her throat and began her presentation.

In the backrooms of Parliament on the plush finely upholstered centuries-old furniture sat the Honourable Sir Miles Bronstein, the Ambassador-nominee to the nation of Spolotikopia. Bronstein, in his fifties, rubbed his bald dome of a head before reaching back and nervously running his old and flabby fingers through the fine white hair running from ear to ear. The high-definition television in the chamber’s anteroom showed the presentation of the case for Bronstein’s position as laid out by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, with Prime Minister Tetley seated in his position to the right of the King’s Royal Representative to Parliament, Sir Alexander Hague. Bronstein, like most in the United Kingdom, expected little to come out of these proceedings outside of the Conservative Party once again taking the opportunity to rail against the UK’s internationalist agenda, unfortunately not entirely supported by the people of the Kingdom. His appointment, per the unwritten codes of conduct, would stand and pass in the majority, the few dissenters being men and women like the Right Honourable Daniel Collins, leader of the Conservatives. He half-listened to his list of prior appointments as deputy ambassador to the various embassies maintained by the United Kingdom well aware of the fact that Spolotikopia would be his first posting as official ambassador. And while Deveraux spoke, he could hear the incoherent shouting of the Conservatives and Christian Democrats despite her attempts to simply speak over their babbling non-sense.

As he thumbed through his file on the nation, Bronstein realized that the two countries had no real interactions prior to a few days ago, which came after elections following the forced resignation of their former prime minister. All-in-all, a welcome sign for a fellow democracy, though potentially a dangerous precedent for popular uprisings against elected officials – something the United Kingdom was wholly keen to defend against at home. A smaller nation than the Kingdom, it appeared, for the most part, that Bronstein’s posting would be quite pleasant, once the official votes had been taken. He took note as Miss Deveraux removed herself from the podium, her presentation finished, the signal for Bronstein to appear coming from knocks on the door by Prime Minister Tetley’s own aides.

As the sun set to the west of Imperium, behind the mountains, the skyscrapers and same mountains providing long shadows on the urban-sprawl covered island of New Britain, the votes were counted after Bronstein’s appointment became official with Parliament’s consent, and the signature of the King’s Royal Representative. Along the New Thames River, a van owned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs removed all furnishings and surveillance equipment from a luxurious river-side mansion, whose open verandas would provide Bronstein’s counterparts with views of the sun setting behind the mountains. As the van pulled away from the walled-off Diplomatic Quarters, the black cast-iron gates closed to be protected by the brightly coloured and archaically dressed members of the elite Royal Guards, who despite their halberds and swords could fend off many more men than it would seem.

Letter to Prime Minister Mann

I welcome your nation’s acceptance of my offer for formal diplomatic ties. Here in the United Kingdom, we’ve already taken care to elect an official ambassador, the Honourable Sir Miles Bronstein, who shall arrive as soon as can be feasibly arranged with a small diplomatic staff of approximately fifteen personnel, and – should you allow – thirty-five lightly-armed members of the Royal Army to guard the ambassador on the United Kingdom’s new extra-territorial embassy. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not extend to your government the same in return, a sizeable former residence of the Kingdom’s colonial days has been allotted by my Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and I would be glad to host a similar complement of diplomatic and security personnel in our capital city of Imperium.

Of course, my hope that this can be the beginning of a fruitful new friendship need not be stated, for I feel it understood by both parties. However, I do wish to formally extend the hospitality of the United Kingdom to yourself, your government, and your people in the hope of developing the aforementioned friendship.

The offer outlined above shall remain on the table, per your agreement, at which point I can begin to send the forward team to prepare our embassy and likewise your government can dispatch its own team, which will be well-received by my government, I assure you.

Sincerely,
Alistair Tetley
Prime Minister

ooc: um, yeah, going about it, i just sort of wrote an extended piece wherein i informally hoped to cover the embassy exchange treaties requirements on my end, them mainly being the 35 guards without any heavy weapons or tanks or helicopters and such. but, feel free to IC express any concerns, reservations, or regulations your government may have. I don't know, really, diplomatic exchanges are something I make up as I go along.
