UPDATE

We take you now to a live press conference being held by Doctor Berkstein, Health and Domestic Security Minister:

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the Grand Duchy, members of the Press, I come to you at this very early hour to confirm that His Royal Highness former Grand Duke Reginald Leopold the First has died.

He was found dead in his bedroom at Roosevelt Palace. Medical personnel on the scene attempted to resuscitate, his body was then transported to Prince Elector Henrik III Royal Army Medical Center where he was officially pronounced dead. Medical examiners have listed the cause of death as "Total Organ Failure" due to advanced terminal cancer.

At this time funeral arrangements have yet to be planned, however, as prescribed by law the Grand Duke will be given a full State Funeral within ten days.

The Government asks that all Hamptonians and all peoples touched by Reginald Leopold the First pray for his soul

May God Bless, and Protect, the Grand Duchy and the soul of our departed brother, Reginald Leopold the First."

President Zwimbala of Pacific Northwesteria bowed his head when he heard the news. His eyes were closed, whether in thought or in prayer nobody could tell. Finally, he spoke.
"I suppose he was an old man. What did they say? Almost a hundred, wasn't he?"
"Yes Sir, 99, Sir."
"A pity. The man goes through the agony of living through an entire century, without having officially done so. Truly, the Lord works in mysterious ways."
"Yes Sir. What shall we say, Sir?"
"Reginald Leopold was almost senile, but he was an honest man. The kind of wisdom that comes with ruling with care for that long is unfathomable to anyone who has not experienced it. This is truly a great loss for the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire, and for the world."
"That it is, Sir, but what are we to say?"
"Right, right. Well, I didn't know the man well at all personally. Although allied through the OMP, we had only a few direct dealings with Hamptonshire. Nobody wants to hear me ramble about this man when there are multitudes more fit to do the job. We shall release a simple, formal statement, something like this..."

The government and people of Pacific Northwesteria mourn the loss of such a distinguished leader, and offer our best wishes to the people of Hamptonshire in these hard times. May Reginald Leopold's soul rest in peace.

Official Statement from The Imperial Union
http://img206.echo.cx/img206/1176/seal2fh.gif

To the World,

The Imperial Union, and this Grand Chancellor especially, feels unrepentant sorrow due to the fact that Reginald Leopold the First died today. I, personally with my wife (yes we're still married) will attend the funeral of Reginald. We will be arriving as soon as we're notified of the date, so that probably means that we will be a few weeks early, but nothing too much for an old friend.

We would also like to send our condolences towards the Hamptonian People and Government, I personally know how good of a man Reginald was. Hm, but I'm just ranting now aren't I? Anyway, expect this Grand Chancellor to attend the funeral.

Oh and by the way, we'll be bringing a gift. A very large gift. God Bless the Grand Duke.

Yours in Peace,
The Imperial Union

Official Statement from the Prime Minister
Democratic Republic of Pacitalia

It is with a heavy heart that I hear of the death of one of the world's greatest leaders, the Grand Duke of Hamptonshire, Reginald Leopold I. This is one of the few times in my life where I feel nothing can come out of my mouth that will neither satisfy my need to assuage the grief and despair of the people affected by such a tragedy nor simply assuage that grief without taking my feelings into account. I hope my message today accomplishes the latter scenario.

For an astounding, yet magnificent sixty-eight years, Grand Duke Reginald Leopold I ran the Grand Duchy of Hamptonshire with courage, valour, maturity, fearlessness, commendable statesmanship and insurmountable leadership skills that are only seen in the occasional leader. I think it is safe to say that a leader like this last Magnus Dux will not be seen for centuries to come in Hamptonshire, let alone most of the world.

I personally had the chance to meet this man many times over my nine years as Prime Minister of Pacitalia and I was blown away every time by his brave disposition and friendly aura that never failed to command respect, positive attention and admiration from myself and my colleagues. To me, he has been a mentor for all the world's up and coming diplomats and leaders, a true example to follow. That said, I am sure that every Pacitalian grieves with their Hamptonian brothers and sisters today and for days to come, as the news emblazons itself above us like the brightest star in the sky.

I only wish that he were here to accept the newest honour bestowed upon him by order of both houses of legislation, the senior deputy prime minister and myself, the twenty-fifth Capostication of the Democratic Republic of Pacitalia, in a posthumous manner. There is no one more deserving of this after a long career of dedicated service like the Grand Duke had accomplished.

Although the wound from hearing the news is fresh, it will heal quickly as Hamptonians and their friends worldwide reflect on the positive benefits his leadership created for his country, his allies and the world. I know in my heart his legacy will never fade off the map.

Rest well, my dear friend. You have earned it.

Sincerely,
Timothy Ell

The Sultanate of Vastiva does mourn the passing of a great man, a great personage; one who served his country with honor and distinction. His passage may have been swift, but his presence shall long be felt.

Our sorrows are with Hamptonshire in this time of mourning; our Grand Vizier shall be in attendance at the funeral, and Vastiva herself shall observe three days of lowered flags and dimmed lights in sympathy with the people of Hamptonshire.

Our hearts and prayers are with the people of the Grand Duchy and with the family of Reginald Leopold I, Magnus Dux. Know we share the view, the world is a lighter place for his having come to it - and a little darker for his having passed.

By our hand this day,
