NPM Reference Thread (Don't Post Here)

Novikov

[OOC: This is a long, boring, technical post which represents my efforts to redesign my military and reconcile it with the 55 days I was gone. It has taken a lot of work, and I am rather happy with it now. If you're up for an adventure, read on.

Also, apologies for not putting in supply vehicles. I will do that in an update.]

[EDIT: Added supply vehicles. Will finish up sidearms and equipment/uniforms sooner or later. Also, will add actual layout of the NPM in a second post.]

----------

Layout – Ground Forces

Individual Soldier:

The individual soldier is the backbone of Novikov’s military fore. All recruits receive three weeks of basic training, followed by additional training based on their assigned job. The training level for an individual soldier is slightly lower than that of the U.S. military – comparable to the skill of many European (RL) militaries.

The basic ground-pounder in the NPM carries the same weapons setup, regardless of what branch of the military he/she is in. That equipment includes:

FAMAS G2 Assault Rifle (5.56 mm NATO) (http://world.guns.ru/assault/as21-e.htm)
Fabrique-Nationale Five-Seven Pistol (5.7 mm SS190) (http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg18-e.htm)
IFOR Tactical Vest w/ NIJ III Chest/Neck Plate Attachments (http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:sX4Fvwt7NQQJ:www.body-armour.com/+European+Modern+Body+Armor&hl=en)
AN/PRC-521 Military Radio (http://www.milspec.ca/radspec/radspec.html#prc521)

---------

Fireteam (3-4 men):

Each fireteam is designed to be an independent small unit, under command of a squad sergeant (Serzhant / Starshiy Serzhant). The fireteam is commanded by a Senior Private (Yefreytor). It is based around a single light machinegun, which serves as a base of fire for the group.

Fabrique-Nationale Minimi Para Light Machinegun (http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg17-e.htm)

----------

Squad (9-10 men):

The squad is the smallest independent unit in the NPM – the fireteam being a dependent unit with no actual commanding officer. Led by a Seargent (Serzhant / Starshiy Serzhant), these units carry different equipment based on their particular role, including anti-tank weapons, mortars, and heavy machineguns.

Fabrique-Nationale MAG M240B/M240G Heavy Machinegun (http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg06-e.htm)
MILAN 1 Light Anti-Tank Weapon (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/milan.htm)
L16 81mm Mortar (http://www.nisat.org/weapons%20pages%20linked/United%20Kingdom/81_mm_l16a2_mortar.htm)
Mistral Portable Surface-Air Missile (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/mistral.htm)

----------

Platoon (16-44 men):

The platoon is the next step up in organizational size. This units is commanded by a Junior Lieutenant or Lieutenant (Maladshiy Leytenant / Leytenant), with a Warrant Officer (Praporshik / Starshiy Praporshik) as second-in-command. The typical platoon consists of two to four squads, typically with a mortar squad and heavy machinegun squad included.

----------

Company (62-190 men):

Three to five companies form a platoon, under the command of a Senior Lieutenant or Captain (Starshiy Leytenant / Kapitan). Second-in-command is a Senior Warrant Officer (Starshiy Praporshik). A company of artillerymen is called a battery.

----------

Battalion (300 – 1,000 men):

This is the smallest independently operating field unit, capable of mounting operations without support of larger units. Consisting of four to six companies, each battalion is under the command of a Major (Mayor), with their second-in-command ranked as either a Senior Warrant Officer or Junior Lieutenant (Starshiy Praporshik / Maladshiy Leytenant). Motorized battalions are referred to as Squadrons at this level, and artillery is similarly called a Regiment.

---------

Brigade (3,000 – 5,000 men):

A brigade is the typical operating field unit, employing two to five independently operating battalions under the guidance of brigade HQ. HQ is headed by a Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel (Polkovnik / Podpolkovnik). Motorized brigades often are referred to as Regiments here.

----------

Division (10,000-15,000 men):

Divisions are given regional initiatives and commands and used for broad-based military operations, generally involving three brigades. Their organizational structure is used mostly for coordinating portions of major battles, as well as other large-scale operations. A division is led by a Major General (General-Mayor), and he is answerable either to the Commander-in-Chief, or to his Corps Commander.

---------

Corps (20,000-45,000 men):

Corps are generally composed of two to five independently operating divisions, and operate as regional and/or theater command groups. A corp’s leader, the Lieutenant General or Colonel General (General-Leytenant / General-Polkovnik), commands almost absolute power over military operations undertaken by the NPM.

----------

Army (50,000 + men):

In rare instances, theater command is carried out by a Field Marshall or Army General (Visshiye Marshal / General Armii) leading a group of multiple Corps. These units have become so large that they rarely are deployed outside the Novikovian heartland.

----------

Commander-in-Chief:

The head of either the entire military, Supreme Commander (Marshal Novikovskei Federatsii), or of a particular military branch - Army (Marshal Novikovskie Suhoputniye Sili), Airborne (Marshal Novikovskie Vozdushno-Desantnye Vojska), Navy (Marshal Novikovskie Voyenno Morskoy Flot), or Airforce (Marshal Novikovskie Voenno-Vozdushnie Sili). These commanders answer directly to the head of government. Their commands are small and mobile, relying on the infrastructure of each Army or Corps to carry out their commands.

----------

Layout – Airforce

Squadron (14-24 Aircraft):

A aircraft squadron, led by a Major (Mayor), consists of a large number of pilots – typically ranked Lieutenant or Senior Lieutenant if they are combat airmen – in corresponding aircraft. Each squadron has a particular mission, and their aircraft reflect it – whether it is bombing, intercepting and dogfighting, or even ground support using attack helicopters.

----------

Wing (42-96 Aircraft):

A wing is composed of three to four squadron, attached to one another in order to compliment different squadron’s strengths and weaknesses and provide a powerful aerial front. The commander of an Airforce Wing is typically ranked as an Air General (Voyska General).

----------

Layout – Navy

Naval Groups:

A Naval Group consists of any force of more than two ships – Novikovian Commanders make no distinction between a naval squadron (generally regarded to be the smaller group) and larger groups and fleets. The navy is split into groups only for military operations or training exercises; there is no set hierarchy. When a group is formed – an action carried out by the Commander of the Navy (Marshal Novikovskie Voyenno Morskoy Flot) – a group commander is determined based on rank and experience. This commander is expected to establish proper doctrine for the group and to perform his duty to the best of his ability. Depending on the size and importance of the group, different ranks may be given command – from Rear Admiral (Kontr Admiral) to a Admiral of the Fleet (Admiral Flota).
