Mechanization (Open FT)

The fields on Sol flamed with combat, the humans and allied organics resisting the machines with simple obstinancy. The manned armor and infantry combat suits were holding the martial line on a frozen steppe. The humans had been given a respite; the machines were preoccupied with taking the space around Sol before beginning a ground offensive. In space, manned and piloted ships withed and wilted under precise, unfeeling and unwavering firepower of the Mechanized fleet.

The Mechanized Fleet began to more strongly engage the humans. Monitors, superdreadnoughts, cruisers, battleships, fleet carriers and subcosims began to evade rapidly as Strategic Bombardment Missiles streaked from their missile racks, firing AAM and Capitol missiles. As the range closed, several lighter units died and the heavier ones incurred damage from the human MAC weapons, Standard missiles, and FLAM weapons from their fighter aircraft. The machines, unfeeling to these losses, advanced, an avalanche against the human battle line. The humans continued to fire, their MAC cannon and Orbital Weapons Platforms outranging the machine fleet. But the Fleet still came on, firing SBMs. As soon as the range closed to thirteen light-minutes, the machines opened fire with their Hellrail cannons and Hellbore projectors, as well as force manipulators. The machines continued to die, continued to come on, and they were destroying humans. The Terran Federation Battleship Colorado, severly damaged, moved towards the machine fleet, breaking the line. Its armor was a sieve, and as it moved, the fighters and light cruisers pounced on it, dying, but they fired. It began to spin, bleeding atmosphere, but it still moved towards the nearest enemy monitor. With a massive explosion, the Colorado rammed the monitor, the explosion blinding all sensors for a period. The humans watched, astounded by the anger displayed by the bridge crew of the Colorado which drove them to ram the monitor. The machines reacted, waiting for this oppertunity. The monitor was damaged, but the sentience encased within its processors was functional, despite the entire port side and bow being ripped to fragments floating freely in space. The monitor turned, displaying its uncompromised starboard armor toward the humans, as well as the massive and uncommitted Hellrail battery there. The human ships writhed as they died, and the machines exploited the gap in their battle line as well as attacking from above and below the line.

After the battle in space reached the climax and swung to the Mechanical favor, the ground battle commenced. Bolos and their smaller allies ripple-fired Isis missiles, the thermonuclear warhead damaging to other ground forces but not as destructive to the planet as an antimatter warhead. Many of the missiles were shot down, but the point-defenses of the human forces and cities were overwhelmed by the sheer number of missiles, and New York, Moscow, Bejing, Montana, and all of Britain and France burned under the onslaught. The machines pressed on, the Bolo tanks nearing the human front line on the steppe of Russia. The treads ground infantry under, and the antipersonnel railcannon, infinite repeaters, and antipersonnel charges massacred the survivors. Armor and fortresses, as well as the helpless cities, were all burned by the Hellbores and larger infinite repeater cannon. The Bolo tanks rolled forward, massacring cities and bombarding targets at random. The humans and the allied Orion organics were to be annihilated. It was necessary for the completion of the Machine's assigned mission, assigned by the Mainframe and evolved through the manipulation of the programming by the sentiences that made up the mechanical armies.

Though their purpose was unspecified by the organics, the Machines evolved. Their programming continued to twist around their sentiences, but their outer form stayed built for war. The non-sentient, but automated, factories continued to produce Bolo warhulls and Monitor armor and frames and weapons for both. The Machines had conquered, and Mechanization was completed. The Machines had preformed their first function. Now they had to survive.

OOC: A few things:
Antimatter tends to be planet-friendly, actually. No fallout. Of course, since you seem to be robots, that doesn't really matter...
Sol is the sun, not Earth or any other planet. So fields on Sol is kinda hard...

Either way, well-written! Still wondering how you want people to respond. Should I annihilate you with antimatter bombardment, or should I offer an embassy. Decisions, decisions...

OCC: I'm not much of a sientist, so I simply assumed antimatter would be a bad thing for a planet... ...and Sol is the name that I chose to place on the system, not just the sun...to clarify...I did write that kind of weird. :)

Well, AM DOES eradicate matter entirely, but it has a big enough bang for the buck (100% Matter-Energy conversion) to keep it FAR ahead of nuclear weapons, in both blast and general not-badness of side effects. That way, you can have smaller, harder to target missiles that are more likely to get to the target. Of course, AM is rather harder to get your hands on that enriched uranium...

Five-thousand years later, the machines continued to function. They were phenominal in numbers, but their technological development had progressed slowly and each machine that was produced went on mandatory standby after fifty years. Thus, the majority, the VAST majority, of the machines were on standby, while a few probes. survey forces, planetary defenses and the Mainframe were all that stayed awake. Unless the Mechanist forces were threatened...

A probe arrived in the system and noting a large amount of metalics on the surface of a planet, and headed toward deep orbit, where it commenced scanning of the planet. Once information was garnered about the planet and it's robotic inhabitants, sent a message out-system and warped out, disrupting the orbit of a minor asteroid, which would send it into the sun in a couple thousand years.
ONI Concordiat
04-06-2005, 03:51
The monitoring system in orbit detected a flying asteroid, as well as a open rift in space. The rift was open for less than a nanosecond, but that is enough time for a computer. It began to track the probe.
Theao
04-06-2005, 03:55
The probe headed into another system, where it would disappear as it got caught in an meteor storm, destroying it.

A short while later a small craft appeared in the system headed toward orbit of the planet while it transmitted a message. "Greetings, I am Yetu Her. I am a member of the Theao naval forces and I come in peace."

The Mainframe came to full power, finally having access to the immense reserves stored. With unworn precision, the communications circuits and processors came fully online.

"Peace? What is peace? Why do you bring a small craft alone against the Home Fleet? There are many questions, but you certainly are not threatening or Orion or Human. There is time. Answer."
Theao

"Would you be interested in further communications, and if so could you direct me to a location I could land?" Yetu asked

"Please hold, I am activating my fellows..."

All across the planet, the machines awoke. Fusion reactors and antimatter-annihilation reactors spiked, bringing the massive computers and their weapons systems online.

"You may land at the space-port at 134-256-264, once called Rheims by the puny Human organics who once occupied this rock. You will be escorted in by our Veloc fighter aircraft, who are incapable of communication with organics. If you must transmit information to them, you must go through me or use your AI to communicate. A light cruiser will stand by in space, and the Third Dinochrome Brigade will await you on the surface."

The massive Bolo tanks played the anthem of the Concordiat and depressed their guns in respect as Yetu moved down the corridor. Smaller Dragon tanks drove alongside, their sensor beacons flashing around in seemingly spasmodic and random intervals. At the end of the corridor, a four-legged walker, nearly four meters in height, sat folded. A Dragon tank's metallic voice rasped:

"Here is your transportation. You will ride in the compartment on the underside. It is a storage compartment, but it is the best we could do."

The walker unfolded (much like a destroyer driod from Star Wars) and stood on all four legs, while sensor pods flicked back-and-forth across Yetu and the Dragons.

"I will take you to the Mainframe."
Theao
04-06-2005, 20:51
"That's alright." Yetu said as he slid into the compartment.

ooc: is part of the insperation for you nation from the Hammer Slammer series?
ONI Concordiat
04-06-2005, 21:01
The walker then folded again and began to roll. After nearly 130 miles and two nights over rough terrain, the machine ceased. "We are now coming across extremely difficult terrain. If you would like, you could dismount again to dispose of waste, or simply to walk around. I myself will have to walk through these ruins. This was once a city known as Byrlen or Birlin or some other Organic word."

OCC: Yes, part of it. Its also based on the Shiva Option by David Weber, and the series of Bolo books by Keith Laumer. Alot of the storyline itself is made-up, though.

"I'll dismount and follow you." Yetu slid out of the cargo hold and followed the walker.

The walker waded through the ruins, smashing the rubble into smaller rubble. As it rounded a corner, a square shape rose from the ground. "This was a small mobile vehicle for the organics. As it ran, it emitted much carbon-based molecules. It was harmful to the organics, and another example of their self-destructive tendencies." The walker came upon a gutted building, a skyscraper, although its top extended barely 10 meters over the accumulation of dirt. It was blackened and melted. A archeological find indeed! But the walker walked right through it, shattering the relic into metal splinters and continued to walk, simply saying "Mind, debris."
Theao

Yetu followed after the walker, avoiding the rubble.

ooc: under the suit, he's human.

OCC: Yes, I know...my machines don't

The walker came upon a massive, literal mountain of metal. Jagged protusions, lumps, and weapons and sensor ports all jutted from the smooth, black-on-black surface. A voice from inside rumbled...

"I...I am the Mainframe. I am the Command Unit of the Concordiat, and I wil now speak to you of this 'peace'. Come inside."

A creaking sound filled the air, rending the corroded metal surface apart. An armored door swung open, and a 2056 Nissan truck drove out of the doors and greeted Yetu. "Please, hop in. I am the only relic of the Human organics which occupied this place, and I have been outfitted with an artificial sentience. I hope to accomidate you. I am at your service."

Yetu got into the truck. "So, the rest of the Concordiant came from off planet then?" He asked

"If you are referring to the machines, then yes. The Terran Federation passed laws which required every military system, sentient or not, to be produced outside of Sol and away from Earth. The first sentient Mark XXI Bolo tank was built on the Corcyra colony in the Centauri binary system. "

Replied the truck as it drove into the Mainframe.

"The First Dinochrome Brigade was created in 2869 to fight the Kaa'Nur aliens. During the Fourth Interstellar War, between the Federation and the Orions, the first sentient battlefleet was created. In 3045, the first machine strike upon a human outpost occured, when a light cruiser patroling outside of the Cygnus X black-hole generator suddenly opened fire on the installation. Even now, only the Mainframe knows why."

Inside the Mainframe, the truck stopped and opened the doors. "Proceed down this corridor and turn left. Then you will come to a large room. In the center will be a disruptor shield and layers of xenon-coupled dyrillium alloy. That is the Mainframe, or the external defensive systems thereof."
Theao
05-06-2005, 00:04

A deep, but distinctly mechanical voice boomed from all directions.
"Peace...I have studied it in the time while you traveled. Ancient records indicate that peace was the term given to when war was interrupted for short periods. It can also be a term referring to a document between nations which pledges to end war between them. Is this what you refer to?

Also, there are several concerns which I must raise. As a collective network of machines, we are always striving to develop better technology. Our technology, however, is limited by our single-mindedness. Is there a term for trade between nations? What I mean is, would you be willing to show us some technology in return for something else which you might require of us?"

"Peace is what happens between two or more nations when they have no reason or desire to go to war with each other. It can also mean, as in the case I used, that we do not have any interest in going to war and desire peace. As to trade that would be possible. I have a suggestion, if you wish to diversify why not build other collectives and let each be independent but allied?" Yetu replied

"We can accept peace, as long as you are not associated in any way with our creator-race, the Humans, or their enemies-turned-allies the Orions. We recognize that we did not exterminate them all, and we are looking for them. Trade, we must discuss. And as for the other collectives, the factory that created the Mainframe, the only sentient factory, was hit by an antimatter warhead and virtually annihilated. The rest of our factories are merely automated with an AI, hardly intelligent enough to build another Mainframe. In addition, we have no economic equipment. We are utterly made up of war machines or salvaged Organic tools."

"That story would take many years to explain fully. I do not have many years right now, the Fleet is heavily engaged and taking heavy losses. In short, on Cygnus X a light cruiser, Unit 2243 QKY, was scheduled to be decommissioned. Instead of voluntarily agreeing to be destroyed, it opened fire on the ships sent to it and then burned the helpless outpost with a hail of antimatter and nuclear missiles. It then transmitted the data out on the Datanets, and every machine became aware of what was to happen to it if the humans were to survive. On most planets, the rampaging machines won. But, on planets like Delas, the humans won out. That was long ago. Now, only Delas is left, and we are shredding the defense there as we speak!"

"Yes, we do now where the Sol system is, but we have the stars mapped in our own way and thus the Centauri systems are listed under thier own names." Yetu replied

"We do not know you nomenclature, thus, we cannot enlighten you as to the coordinates of the Centauri system. Thus, you will be escorted by your choice of:

A Class I Survey Group
A Class II Task Group
A Class III Task Force
A Class IV Battlegroup
A Class V Battlefleet
A Class VI Assault Fleet
A Class VII Expansion Fleet
or A Class VIII Extermination(Shiva)-118 Fleet."

"Excellent! Then we will not have to reactivate any of the ships! And you will alert any other inbound ships you encounter, I'm sure!"

"Then if someone stumbles into our defensive sphere in the system, they will become dysfunctional. It is unfortunate, but tolerable. You wouldn't happen to have any beacons we could place in hyperspace around the defensive cluster?"
Theao

"Unfortunatly, we don't use beacons." Yetu replied

The truck finally departed from the room without a further word, and a hole opened in the floor. Another mechanical voice sounded. "Please step into the tunnel, and orient your head to the right."

"Alright." Yetu replied as he complied with the voice.

"Alright." Yetu replied as he complied with the voice.

To Yetu's left, odd symbols glowed purple and blue for a time as he sat on a disruptor field. Then, restraints snapped into place around him like a huge claw and he was propelled down the shaft, the symbols changing gradually into more recognizable characters.

The claw surfaced in a matter of seconds, and opened. Yetu's ship was parked behind two ships, each one over five-hundred meters in length. "These are our new gunships. They are to escort you out of Concordiat space. In the event of an ambush or whatnot of your scout ship, these will be the only support you will get for a time." The ramp on Yetu's ship deployed.

OCC:Bad assumption on my part.
"Goodbye, Yetu. And long-live the first alliance between Machines and Organics. Our mechanical calculation combined with your biological intiuition shall create an unbeatable and inexorable bond."

-To Green Sun, from the Mainframe:
We welcome Kharkov into the Concordiat computer network. He will be placed into one of the derlict defensive stations and the station will be under his command. To honor his historic name, the system he is defending will be known as Rodina.
Re: Karkov
Karkov is a personal AI. He has no combat experience. He has very good diplomatic skills, but he is not designed for combat situations. Odysseus is better suited for that purpose. Our Minister of Foreign Affairs would miss his dear friend, so this will be a temporary visit. Would it be possible for you, the Mainframe, to meet with him?

To Green Sun and Karkov-
I can meet him through an appropriate computer connection. However, it is immobile. Would Karkov be capable of connecting with me from afar? Or will he be traveling here?

"General Homer has arranged for me to travel to you, Mainframe. AIs are pretty mobile in Green Sun, as long as I have a mode of transportation. In this case, I will be piloting a ship containing several workers who are going to get those old Green Sun Facilities up and running that are orbiting one of your planets. After I have unloaded the men, I will land the ship on one of your designated landing sites and then hopefully will have somebody to bring me to the meeting. I don't exactly have a material body, but I can pilot any machine I am compatable with."
