IC:The doors where always open, though most pretended they wern't, people activly crossed the road to walk on the overside of the wide open oak doorways as though somthing unpleasnt was going to erupt out of them.

They where sunk into the oldest part of the walls of the Imperial Palace, at the place where the crumbling marble was gleaming in the sunlgiht, strange because no-one cleaned it, in the day anyway.

Above the gates there was no writing, just a symbol, a single dark figure imprinted on the marble, no one knew how old it was, they all knew what it meant.

They said that the doors where always open because death was always ready for buisness, it wasn't true, the doors just had been built so that they didn't fit together. Needless to say the carpenter was somewhere on top a mountain, perminatly.

If you lived r worked in one of the nearest skycrapers you would notice the building continued for a long way behind the walls, though most of it was underground.

However today was a speical day, the new students where arriving, they arrived in ones and twos dragging suitcases with them, some arrived in limos, some on horseback, all looked nervous.

You didn't last long in the guild if you where a poor student, half of them wouldn't make it through the first year, the half that did would be lucky to complete there education.

That said the Guild charged very low tuition fees and offered the best all-round education in the country, your child would know 6 languages, how to drive over 150 diffrent types of viacle, play at least 2 musical instruments and be proficcent with most weapons he came into contact with...if he came out at all.

Levin and Crena had both been enrolled in this 'academy'. They had both arrived by plane and caught a taxi to a few blocks away from the guild building. "So Levin, what do you think of this program?"
"It'll be interesting." They ported thier backpacks and headed toward the guild hall. Once there Crena, pulled out a piece of paper, "This is the place."
They then both walked into the doorway.

IC: They where greeted by a large courtyard, filled with other prespective students, in between the student the tutors, full assasins dressed in black moved gracefully.

The ceriling was inscriped with the assasins creast, this time with a motto beneath them, ilrandis Exhumas Dittos Honorus, no kill without payment.

To the end of the room was a staircase that led down into the deapths of the Guild and to the other side of that was a door. That was all the hall was furnished with.

They both set thier backpacks down and waited, leaning against a wall, with the stairs on thier left.

Certainally the ones who didn't cheak there beds for scorpians would be dead by dawn.

IC: Bazrius Hood was suprised by the mans appearence, he had been a tutor at the build for 4 years now, and he hadn't seen anyone like this before. "I'll need your name." He said smoothly, his voice like honey over bread, "To see if your enrolled."

Carla was a typical flirt and attention seeker, she sat around looking at the other students noticing they were all younger, she sighed and looked at Mark, she then realised she didnt love him anymore- she wanted to be a young, beautiful and single assasin.

The door swung open with a threatening creak, opening onto a large room. It was dark with a fire in the centre that failed to light up the rooms corners. They would feel a thousand eyes upon them, boring into them, all hidden.

Deep armchairs faced away from them, there occupants shrouded in darkness. Everywhere weapons stood or hung on walls, ready to be used. At one end of the room where 10 doors, marked with roman numerals, at the other end was a long table, topped with food. around thats several black-clad strangers sat.

"Don't worry about him, he's just a bit into the whole image thing, just ignore him and he won't kill you. And don't ever eat the carrots, ever, there always poisoned. In fact most of this is poisoned." He smiled again and pulled out a blue vial he poured it on the roast pork, it changed colour to green. "It's safe," he said and tucked in, offering some to them. "I'm Richard by the way."

Carla sat on her checked bed watching the others eat, she couldnt bear to watch, Mark had gone off in a huff, she felt sick at the sight of children eating scorpions, she curled up in bed.

There will be two breaks at lunch and in the afternoon, each 15 minuates long. the lessions run from 5 in the moring to 8 at night afterwards you shall be allowed the rest of the day and night to yourselves."

"You may leave at anytime you want after that period but if you do not turn up for you lessions in the moring your names will be strucken from the regester and you shall be presumed dead.. You shall also be given 5 honour pounds a day to spend. This you shall pay back after you have graduated,

She came to the doors and pulled back her hood. She was known as Tari...nothing more...nothing less. Her white hair was pulled back at the nape of her neck, and it contrasted sharply with her ebony-black skin. Her sharp elven features seemed to have been etched in stone. Her gray eyes took in all sights in her field of vision, and her sharply pointed ears took in the rest of the scene, giving her a panoramic "view" of the world around her. She looked the human equivalent of twelve or thirteen.

Tari had turned her head as her ears picked up the sound of an approach. Humans might think they were stealthy...and this one almost was, with all the other noise going on.

"Very well."

Tari went down. She heard the iron ball coming down just in time to roll out of its way, then continued her tumble on past the crossbow bolts. She then stood up, letting her eyes adjust to the infra-red light in the tunnels. She saw the motion detectors ahead, and could guess at the placement of explosives. She raised her wrist, and her Aegal became a bracelet, and clasped on tightly. She went past using a series of steps and flips, then came to the snake pit, where she knelt and looked down. "Well, hello there." Holding out her hand, she cast a radiating cold spell to repel them, and walked on to the door. After listening for other traps behind it, she opens the door and steps in.

The boy wasn't much older than sixteen, but his entire demenour was one of someone who was nervous yet determined at the same time. He was about 5'5'' tall, and his short black hair stuck out at odd angles to his scalp. His eyes were piercing green, and when he looked at a person, they would get the impression that he was looking straight through them. His back was ramrod straight, his stance easy yet ready at the same time. In one hand he carried a suitcase. Slung across the other shoulder was what looked like a sports bag. But it couldn't be further from the truth...

He looked once at the open door, and then stepped through it,"I came to learn... and learn I shall"

There was the sound of firecrackers and expolsives going off as she entred,someone yelled "The first one today!" At the top of there voice, another gave her a hug.

Really The Claw house are one big happy familly, unlike the other houses they didn't spend half the time trying to kill eahc other, and despite there aura of invanurabilty and quite professianalism outside the hosue-room inside they shed all that.

It would be interesting to see what the other houses would think if they saw the claws acting like this, certainly uninterested isn't the sort of word you'd use. Bemused is more like it.

It is hard to say where it all comes from, maybe it's them letting there hair-down after all the time that they spend enforcing quiet respect. Anyway, once there safe in there house room, they like to party.

A big banner was hung above the fireplace baring the words, 'WELCOME NEWCOMERS!" in bright red letters, a supply of beer was on the table along with food and music was playing.

The Claws don't often get new members, alive ones at least, and when they do they celebrate it.

There where about 40 or 50 people in the room, most of them where patting her on the back, or hugging her or wildly cheering, whichever they prefered. "Incredable," one yelled, "we saw it all on the security camras! How you get past the motion sensors was incredable!"

Tari had reflexively put a forcefield around herself (lowlevel) at the sound of the firecrackers, and it dropped when her eyes readjusted to spectrum-light.

Needless to say, this familiar kind of greeting was...unexpected.

What the guard was not to know that Raven had been the apprentice of one of Snake Eater's finest assasins, the Master Eversor, known only as Vamp. However, Vamp had been killed whilst on assignment, by a half-drow, half dragon woman and her human companion. Thus, Raven was next in line, but his training was not complete. The computers was a large room with a screen at one end, terminals graced the walls, the room buzzed with the smell of power.

The screen flickered up as they entred, showing a loading bar at 99% it flicked onto a hundred, and a list of links was on the screen, listed in relevence at the top was a artical marked Master Eversor, giving a artical about all known information, about the Eversor.

There where hazy pictures and drawings of past eversors, and a more recent long range shot of two figures. One was a boy the other was man, nothing more could be descurned, a second was about the current Master and the few facts that they knew. There was barley anything there.

The other links where ancent-witness reports, information about snake eaters, a artical about someone claiming there husband had been killed by the Master. Another about a assasin claiming that the master had been killed, another about him taking on a apprentace. so much inform,ation that revealed so little. The results for Raven drew one probable link, a assasin had supposedly heard the Master referring to his apprentace as Raven. This testomany was not reliable though as the assasin had been semi-drunk at the time and was using a G-16 listening device.

The assasin turned to Raven, "Thats all we have, I presume the artical and photo was referring to you, but I cannot prove it and I suspect i never will. If you still wish to enrole then I shall have to take some simple details and then I can send you to your dorm."

One such spirit brought her befor the Assassin's Guild entrance. Here is where you must go, Areis of Gnufasur. The spirit she had been following said to her.

"Well, where am I?" She asked it. Although, since only people with psychic powers could see spirits, most could easily suspect she was speaking to a nearby hidden assassin at the entrance to the Guild.

Tell him you are here as a student... The spirit said, just as an Assassin seemed to materalize behind her, "What do you want?" He asked of her, eyeing her rust red Preistess uniform.

Areis blinked quickly, then decided to trust the spirit, having sensed no malevolent energy from it. "I'm here to enroll as a student." She nods and flashes him a smile...

There was a rumble behind him as the first of the traps, a giant stone began to roll down the passage, it would be seconds before it reached him, ahead layers of crossbows and motion censors waited for him to dive out of the way...

He saw the traps ahead, but trusted his reflexs enough to work this. Waiting until the last possible second, he dived out the way, rolling as he went and landing on his chest, laid out on the cold ground. The crossbows didn't stand a chance of hitting him if he stayed put

Raven jumped up, his legs coming into the splits to hold him above the floor. The position wasn't painful, though it was uncomfortable for long peroids of time. He saw a bar protuding from the wall, and lept for it, somersaulting off the other side and landing on the far edge of the heated floor,'Perfect... for the first time'

Next came the snake pit-set off by a pressure sensor in the floor as the victim stepped over it, then, and only then was the student almost there. There was one more test to come afterwards.

It was a while before Tari managed to pull herself away from the crowd and head up to the dorm room. There were many bunks there.

Probably more than enough for anyone who makes it... She selected a bunk, and set her bag beside it.

So...Assassin's Guild...so far, it looks like a human frat house that has a really tough entrance exam. What in hell?

She sighed softly, missing the dignified order of her hometown. Probably better training at home, too.

Not trusting the academy to leave well enough alone, she checked for snakes or spiders or whatnot.

She found two scorpions, and shook her head. Poor creatures, to have to die such.

With a spell, she incinerated them, then sat down on her bed and pulled out a book.

Raven pulled a similar maneuver,"Missing home?"

She looks over at him. "A little. But I was sent here for a reason, and I will not question the will of my masters. What of you?"

"I'm here because it's the only place that could possibly finish my training"

"Who was training you?"

"His name was Vamp... a great assasin, but a terrible human. Racist as hell... but a brilliant assasin"

"Vamp...h'mmm...I might have heard that name somewhere before, but I couldn't tell you where."

"It does not matter anymore. He is dead, almost two years now. I am the Vindicare Master... but there are still things I need to learn"

She nods. "According to my master...well, no, more like according to my master's master...there is always something more to learn."

For the first time, Raven smiled, although it was tight-lipped and brief,"Your master is very wise"

"Nothing less has ever been observed from him."

Wow...he smiles. And here I thought he was worse than Cougar...Cougar almost never smiles.

Raven watched her reaction,She's thinking about something... comparing me to someone.

He sat down on the bunk opposite her, which was also unoccupied,"So, it looks like we are both here for the same reason"

"Pretty much."

Raven laid back on the bed,"Correct if I'm wrong... but that entrance test wasn't as taxing as they say it is?"

"I thought it was really easy. Dodge the rolling stone, avoid the motion detectors and crossbow bolts, and don't fall into the snakepit. Come on, anyone can do it by the age of...what, thirty? ...don't know what that would translate to for your race."

He thought about this,"From what I read, it's about the age of six... most likely younger, but I'm not sure"

"Well...I'm thirty-nine now...so I don't think it's all that young..."

"I'm not sure of the exact figures or ratios, so it's difficult to say"

"Yeah, pretty much...I don't even know if there are exact figures."

He doesn't seem like such a bad guy...he kinda reminds me of Shan...with a less cheerful personality. Nah. More like a young Vedt. Now that is hard to imagine.

Raven continued to stare at the ceiling,"I hope this place is all it's cracked up to be"

"If I had to make a judgement now, by the lives of their elite...."

"It is of no concern. I shall complete my training, and then return to my only family"

Tari decided that looking at him was going to do no good if he wouldn't maintain eye contact, so she laid down, as well.

"What's your family like?"

"Dead, mostly. My only remaining family is now living in a mental institute. My sister was driven insane by the horror that she saw... I was lucky... Vamp had accepted me by then. What of yours?"

His voice carried no hint of any true emotion

"Well...I've been an orphan since I was ten...as far as I know, I have no birth family left. My master became my 'mother,' so to speak...and the other children that were accepted into the school of magick I was taken into are my siblings. It's quite a large 'family'...but no one related by blood."

Her voice, which was naturally soft (her race had sensitive ears, so shouting was pretty much unnecessary), sank even softer during the first part, but picked back up at the end.

"I'm sorry about your blood family... it is a sad thing to loose anyone, especially your whole family."

"I don't even remember them." She turns over on her side to look at him again. Whether or not it did good, she was used to looking at someone when she talked to them. "It must be even worse for you, since you do remember them."

He turned to face her, propping his head on his hand,"It is of no consequence... they are dead, and I cannot change that. I do vist my sister occasionally... but she does not recognize me"

A slight choke entered his voice, but the boy fought it back.

She nods. "It must be very hard...to know someone...and then to lose them, but not to lose them...it's almost worse than when you watch them die."

"Sometimes, I wish she had died. It sounds terrible, but prehaps that would have been better than the life she has to lead"

"No...I know how you would feel. This probably sounds more terrible than your wish...but when one of our class suffers irreparable brain damage...physical damage can be fixed...but when they're left almost vegitative...we kill them. It is hard...I have watched my master weep after killing a student that had cast a spell too high for him, and left him a moaning twitching mass. But to make them live like that would be unbearably cruel."

"I can understand why... but we have to look after them... some choose to do it, and we must give them the best life we can"

"But is it really...a life? Where you can't recognise the people you love, where you cannot move from the place where you are, where anything and everything you are and has been has been lost? Is it really a life when someone else cleans you, as though you were an infant, until finally you die? No...the soul is gone then, but the heart still beats."

"I was considering doing the deed myself... she is no longer my sister... I just want her to be free"

Tari shook her head. "Don't kill her yourself...you shouldn't have to bear that burden, because you obviously still think of her as your sister."

Raven sighed,"It is a difficult thing to comprehend"

"Not really. Love's not love when one takes into account other matters. You love your sister, right?"

Yes. What sort of question is that?

"No...think. You gave me the automatic human response, the 'yes, of course I love my family' response that seems to be bred into you. But do you really love your sister?"

I loved my sister... but it is no longer my sister who resides in that home

"A good answer. I will see if I cannot get to your planet after this is over, then. You should not have to bear that burden. It would break you."

She laughs. "You don't know what profession I'm in. You know two of my partial professions. But thank you for the compliment."

She lets the silence hang for a moment.

"And you really seemed like you needed a friend."

"Assasination is a lonely buisness... it doesn't leave much time for friends... but I thank you anyway"

"I'll be your friend while we're here...after that, we'll probably never see each other again...so..." She shrugs. "I guess I'll still be your friend after we leave, unless one of us winds up in the other's sights." She grins. "Then, it's war."

"With the state of our nation's relationships as they are... I hope it does not come to that"

"As do I. It shouldn't...not within your lifetime, anyway. But humans change much from generation to generation...I hope it does not change for the worse within my lifetime...but I cannot say for sure."

"Barbarossa is wise... I just hope that his successor, when the time comes, is as wise... I have no wish to fight Drow"

"Yeah...that wouldn't be any fun...although, between your tech levels and our magick, it's about even, I'd say."

He laughed briefly,"Technology against magick... an interesting match to be sure"

"True. Hey...did you just laugh? Wow...forgive me, but you seriously don't seem to be the type."

"Everyone is entitled to laugh or cry or anything at any time... some people just make the concious decision to not do so for much of the time"

"True, but..." She sits up and puts one hand on her chin, bracing her elbow against her knee. "How to explain this? You have about you an aura...no....well...it looks like a wall of ice. So I didn't think you'd be the type to let yourself laugh."

"I have not truly laughed in nearly twelve years... since I was four years old... in that time, I can think of only three occasions"

She winces. "Ouch...and I was brought up to believe that laughter should come every day. I'll see about getting you a Vel'xunyrr, so that we can keep in touch...you need a friend...probably more than you realize."

"Don't take this the wrong way, I beg of you... other people only complicate my life. I've had to live for myself for so long... I've had to become emotionless to be effective... if an assasin has emotions, they may doubt what they do, or develop an attachment to a target... and that never helps."

He sighed,"But you are most likely right, I do need someone who I can trust and tell things to... a friend"

"Well, I wasn't telling you to get attatched to a target. Trust me, you need a friend. Otherwise, your soul will shrivel up, and then you won't be living for anything but money, and life is really pointless and boring."

He looked at her for a moment, his eyes seemingly boring into her skull,"Your ways are more alien than I imagined... but they do make more sense"

She held his gaze, her eyes still warm and friendly. "Hey, if it works..."

"... don't change it. We have a similar saying."

His eyes, having been hard and cold at the beginning, had softened, and a warmth had entered his voice, giving it a rich, slightly deeper tone

"Exactly."

What was that human expression? Breaking the ice? Almost literally, for this one...

Tari rotated her wrist, slightly uncomfortably, then looked down at it.

"Oh, that's where you got off to." She tapped it, and it became a small eagle, which went up to her headboard.

"Meet Keris, my aeagle. Keris, meet Raven."

He stared at what he had just seen,"Ok... that is what could best be termed interesting"

"Really? They're quite commonplace in Kaymiril. She's a communications device, alarm clock, transportation mode, and companion, all in one. And she also has some few combative abilities...haven't really tested those out yet, though."

"Commonplace to you... to me, it is a new thing"

"Well, if the other human I know is any indication, you'll probably hate her."

"If the other human is who I think he is, him and technology that answers back never did get on"

She laughs. "That's kind of funny."

"Why?"

"Think about it from my perspective a moment. These things are normal...and occasionally you'll find a mouthy one. But the owner doesn't normally argue with it, just tells it to stop. So picture, if you will, a grown man arguing childishly with a scrap of metal blessed through enchantments with some little bit of sentience."

"It's funny to be sure... but it must prove entertaining to watch"

"We don't get to see it all that much...my master does, though. It's her Oreb that he argues with."

"Because everyone in our unit knows that there is only one human who has moved to Kaymiril on a permanent basis, because he married a Drow."

She reaches up to stroke Keris, when the AEagle hopped down and stretched out into a screen, facing Tari. A voice played from the machine.

"Hey, Tari, gotten killed yet?"

A girl's voice spoke "Or killed anything?"

T -- "Oh, yeah, been killed a coupla times, killed a coupla things...all in all, it's been a so-so day."

She turns it so that the screen is facing Raven.

"Raven, meet my three best friends, Jovin, Shan, and Ashra, and guys, meet my new friend, Raven of Snake Eaters."

*All* Hi.

S -- *to R* Don't worry about Tari. I know she seems scary at first, but really, she's not too bad.

*Behind the screen, Tari is shaking her fist. Shan continues blithely* I'm probably going to get hit for that when she gets home, but ohwell.

A -- Shan, she introduced him as a friend.

S -- Crap! I gave the wrong warning. What I meant to say, was, don't mind her sweet outside demeanor, piss her off and you'll die.

T -- Ashra, hit him for me.

*Ashra whacks Shan on the back of the head, getting a laugh from Jovin.*

J -- So, Tari, having fun yet?

T -- Not yet. How are things at home?

J -- Not bad *background, Shan and Ashra bickering over why she hit him* ...*to Raven* Don't mind those two...*back to Tari* Your baby misses you.

T -- He'll be fine. Anyway, I'm sure we've confused him enough, so I will talk to all of you at a later time.

J -- Sure.

*The conversation ends, and Keris returns to her original form.*

T -- Right, so...those are my friends.

"An interesting bunch, to be sure... you seemed very close to all of them"

"I've known them since I can remember." She laughs. "We probably all seem like a very odd bunch to you...but Shan's odd to all of us, so don't worry about him."

"Oddness and normal... things in the eye of the beholder"

"True. Hey, lighten up. You're gloomier than Vedt on a bad day."

Raven raised an eyebrow,"Vedt? I don't even know you that is... and something tells me being as I am is not a good thing?"

"Well, you are who you are, I can't change that. But you'd have more fun if you'd lighten up."

She flops back down on her bed. "Y'know...these things are really far too comfortable for this sort of school."

"Fun... something I miss having, it must be said. And you are right.... they are far too comfortable"

"Want to play a game? I have a couple."

He sat up,"What sort of game do you have in mind?"

"Well, there are some games programmed into Keris that require strategy, or we could hit a ball back and forth across the room with paddles."

Raven thought about this for a moment, then looked at her,"Strategy is good for a start, taxing the mental agility of the person"

"Ummm...that's training, not fun." She pulls up her bag, and starts rummaging through it. "No...what's that doing in there? No...Oooooooh...Rhenna decided I couldn't pack for myself...What?" She pulls out a little clay object and laughs. "That's so cute. My 11 year old made it the other day...we all take care of the little ones, but there's this eleven year old that has taken a particular liking to me...he's this big and he's so cute..." she starts laughing. "But I seriously have no idea what this is." She sets it down next to her, and continues rummaging. "Wow...I don't have anything fun that couldn't also be training. Unless you want to balance quills on your nose and have a competition for who could keep it on the longest."

Raven's ears pricked up at the mention of Rhenna, but he said nothing,"So, basically, your as bad as I am"

"No...it's just that you don't seem to realize the point of fun, and the games that are fun could potentially be turned into training with a person in that mindset."

"Where I come from, we don't have much time for fun... I can't remember the last time I really did something I enjoyed"
