Background: After the commissioning of the new Steadfast-class SSBN/SSGN and Navarre-class SSNs, the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy had not seen fit to update their fleet of aging Bolash-class patrol submarines. With advancements in the area of diesel-powered submarines slow in coming, the old class still served the ISN well. However, with a new generation of attack submarines entering the market, notably the Nowotny-class SSNs designed and built by the Royal Shipyards of Isselmere-Nieland, the ISN contracted the Portland Iron Works and asked them to design a new patrol submarine with updated technology and features. The Minuteman-class SSK is the result of this meticulous planning.
Features: The PIW took some of the best of the Navarre and incorporated a key feature of the class, a double hull. The outer hull is cased with hardened amorphous steel, which is three times stronger than regular steel and is non-magnetic. The outer hull is coated with anaerobic tiles to reduce noise emissions and can be coated with radar absorbant paint to reduce radar profile. A layer of absorbant foam separates the outer hull from the inner hull, which consists of titanium, vadium and aluminum.
Propulsion: A high-efficiency diesel generator with a lead acid battery powers the Minuteman, and an air independent propulsion system allows for silent slow running includes a fuel cell equipped with oxygen and hydrogen storage. The system consists of four PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cells, providing between 150 kW per module. The boat is capable of speeds ranging from 15 knots surfaced to 25 knots submerged.
Armament: Unique among Sarzonian-built SSKs, the Minuteman carries a Bayonet: The newly-developed ultraheavy torpedo designed by Windham & Green Defence Industries for the Portland Iron Works. The Minuteman carries four 650 mm torpedo tubes for those large weapons. The tubes can be adapted to fire standard 533 mm torpedoes like the Silver.
Countermeasures: ESM: EADS FL 1800u; Decoys: TAu 2010 torpedo countermeasures system; Radar: Kelvin Hughes Type 1007 I-band navigation radar; Sonar: STN Atlas Elektronics DBQS-40 sonar suite; STN Atlas elektronic MOA 3070 mine detection sonar; Periscopes: Zander Optronic Hunter 12 Search and Hunter 13 Attack Periscope.
