INTRODUCTION AND ORDER OF BATTLE
INTRODUCTION
Hogsweat's ground, air, and naval forces, known as the Hogsweatian Defense Force (HDF), fall under the command of a single general staff. Conscription is universal for Hogsweatian men and women over the age of 17, although some people are exempt from service because of religious reasons; those that are still often serve in logistical departments. During 1980-2005 Hogsweat's Defense Budget rose from 21 Trillion GHP to 30.5 Trillion GHP although new cuts have reduced the amount to what it was in 1980, pretty much.
The highest ranking HDF officer, the only officer to hold the rank of Field Marshall, is the chief of staff, who is chairman of the general staff and is responsible to the minister of defense, and indeed has before been the minister of defense. The general staff is in charge of "professional" matters, such as organization, training, and the planning and execution of military operations.
The general staff has as its members the chief of general staff branch (operations), the chiefs of manpower, logistics, and intelligence; the four area commanders; and the commanding officers of the air force and ground corps. The ground corps commander was responsible for training, doctrine, and development of equipment for the four combat corps of paratroop/infantry, armor, artillery, and engineers. Operational control of the ground forces went through a separate chain of command from the chief of staff directly to the three area commanders--Chukraine (forces facing Psov and Shen Zhou); Homeland (forces facing Hestonia, Riah, Lietuveska ); and Southern (forces facing Kriegorgrad)--who in turn exercised command over divisions and brigades.
The HDF, founded in 1980, has had many different names;
-The Red Army
-The Hogsweatian Army
-The Soviet Revolutionary Army
-The Soviet Red Army
Currently, the HDF's security objectives are to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the State of Hogsweat, deter all enemies and curb all forms of terrorism which threaten daily life. It's main tasks include counter insurgency, keeping the fascist stronghold at Birmingham in check, patrolling the Southern Outpost and dettering attacks from Kriegorgrad or Shen Zhou.
To ensure its success, the HDF's doctrine at the strategic level is defensive, while its tactics are offensive. However before 2005 the HDF has taken part in over 20 worldwide offensive operations; either defending and garrisoning allied countries, pacifying enemy countries, helping the left wing in revolutions and civil wars, and as a detterent to an invasion of an Ally. Given the country's l territorial depth, the HDF must take initiative when deemed necessary and, if attacked, to quickly transfer the battleground to the enemy's land or push it back to the border, to stop an enemy penetrating deep into Hogsweat. The HDF always fights on the defensive, even in invasions. If Hogsweat mainland is invaded, HDF Doctrine states that enemy supply lines must not be allowed to established - if they are, fast moving vehicles and air support must cut them quickly.
In preparing for defense, the HDF deploys a small standing army (made up of conscripts and career personnel) with early warning capability, and a regular air force and navy. Three quarters of its forces are reservists, who are called up regularly for training and service and who, in time of war or crisis, are quickly mobilized into their units from all parts of the country. It should be noted there is always a First Strike element of the airforce ready to deploy at any one time.
Except when combat duty is involved, men and women soldiers of all ranks serve side by side as technicians, communications and intelligence specialists, combat instructors, cartographers, administrative and ordnance personnel, computer operators, doctors, lawyers and the like.
All eligible men and women are drafted at age 17. Men serve for two years, women for 18 months. Deferments may be granted to qualified students at institutions of higher education. New immigrants may be deferred or serve for shorter periods of time, depending on their age and personal status on entering the country. Upon completion of compulsory service, each soldier is assigned to a reserve unit. Men up to age 55 serve up to 28 days a year, a period of time which can be extended in times of emergency. Veterans of compulsory service meeting current HDF needs may sign up as career officers or NCOs. The career service constitutes the command and administrative backbone of the HDF. Graduates of officers' or pilots' schools or special military technical schools are required to sign on for periods of career service.
ORDER OF BATTLE
There are currently only five divisions of career soldiers serving in the HDF. Each of these divisions is made up of a motorised detachment, an armoured detachment, two infantry detachments, an artillery detachment, an engineer detachment, and an airborne detachment. Each detachment is a brigade strong.
