The Omega Project
Precise Location: Classified.
Underground Silo.
T-minus 5 minutes.
Scientists were rushing to and fro making checks and preps. Ground control specialists were making last minute checks. Everything had to go exactly right. The future of the nation depended alot on this project.
T-minus 2 minutes.
All air traffic throughout the Union of People's Republics was grounded, the airspace being patrolled by fighter craft.
The selected crew were strapped into the experimental craft doing their own systems checks.
The massive silo doors opened in preparation.
Captain Greyskull checked his monitor last time then leaned back into his chair.
T- minus 15 seconds. The crew held their breath
The computer automated voice continued:

Engines online.
Greyskull wiped the sweat off his forehead in relief. He entered the commands in to the command module and the huge craft slowly lifted itself out of the underground hangar.
They continued their ascent until they were on the other side of the moon.
"Ground Control this is the WSS Goliath. Request permission to leave earth orbit with rendevous with target A234 (the designation for the Alpha Centauri system)"
Ground Control: "This is ground control. All clear for departure. Safe Journey."
Greyskull: "Enter the coordinates let see what this baby can do."
The massive spacecraft (the largest ever built by Whittier) turned away from the moon and moved away and out of the solar speeding up until it reached Warp 1. The very first Whittier built craft to reach that speed.
The craft was very similar to that built by other nations due to evolutionary convergence.
30 minutes later
Alpha Centauri.
"Get those photos." ordered Greyskull.
The remote viewer was looking at the Centauri system up close.The first up close look from any Whittierite in history.
Having collected up close photos the ship turned back returned to earth at Warp 1.
The mission successful, the craft returned to the Omega Project Silo. The ground crew celebrated the event. The UPR had joined the insterstellar community at last.
