Population Migration Project [OOC Interest Thread]

One of the fewer touched upon aspects of NS roleplaying is that of population migration. Whilst prisoner and criminal exchanges have occurred in the past, that doesn't really count as population migration. I'm talking immigration and emigration, both free and forced. My interest in this has risen out of my work on my factbook's demography and politics. I thought it would be a somewhat original angle to include the effects of immigration into the political equation, as I guesstimate 7-8% of my population is foreign born and another 7-8% identify themselves by a foreign nationality or ethnicity in addition to the foreign born citizens. Whilst I could fill the void with RL migrant nationalities or NS sanctioned ones(Shoobans come to mind), I thought it would be far more fun to attempt to fill it with citizens of other nations who have immigrated for whatever their reason. It shouldn't be too hard, given the raw number of purges and other "evil" acts that should send refugees and immigrants flowing out in droves.

So, I was hoping to find nations interested in population transfers of varying sizes in order to achieve my goal. They need not be lump sum, as most of it takes the form of immigration/emigration over a series of years or decades. The sizes need not be large, either, though I think it would be interesting to have a couple of large ethnic groups within the country in-addition to the four that already exist. In addition, anyone seeking immigrants for their own projects along these lines, 3.75 million Juumanistrans go abroad per annum, mostly of left-of-center political and social orientations, if you care to know.

Eh, the idea is still really nebulous and fuzzy. Any help fleshing it out or turning it into a more workable project would be greatly appreciated.

I've too wished for some sort of population migration, so count me in... yay for human geography. Of course how much and what and where and when and why all need to be answered, but those are merely details, details...

I'd be interested as well.

Well, how much is rather arbitrary, in the end, as I sincerely doubt any of us has actually devised a formula for calculating outward migration on the basis of in-game decisions and RP. I've found the easiest way is to simply choose a number and peg it per 1,000 people is the easiest way to determine migrants; mine's 1.5 outward migrants/1,000 people.

What and why are where it gets tricky. I'd think the former would depend on the latter. If we're talking conventional economic migration, then one can expect younger and less educated migrants; if leaving because they dislike the ruling regime, feel their beliefs are threatened or mocked, or something like that, you're going to have a somewhat older and better educated migrant. Of course, this is also complicated by a nation's legal barriers-to-entry(for which I'm grateful I have almost none). When hinges on why, as well. Where is relatively simple to deal with, as I'd think they'd normally cluster around entry points unless given stimuli to move inward or cluster elsewhere. Or, alternately, if the country of immigration has a map, the emigration country could simply take a look at that and pick a spot. Azizea, if you're interested, I'll dig mine out and put it up for you to look at if that appeals to you.

Glad to see some interest, though.

I'm interested, thought I'd have a few problems trying to come up with reasons.

Theao, really? Three immediately strike me: the wealthy, seeking lower taxes off-shore, political liberals seeking a less authoritarian regime, and those living in those shanty towns seeking better lives. Now, I'm rather ignorant of Theaoan culture and other intangibles, so they may well be invalid. But, if they're not, they may well be good starting points.

i can the UKA faces overcrowding problems, mitigated by an extremely vibrant and prosperous economy. People may not like living in tiny apartments in highrises, but they may very well like their high salaries and high standards of living... but then there will be those few who say, f*** this, i'm outta here. being a relatively tolerant nation, and relatively few barriers to entrance, the people aren't going to often leave because of discrimination. i think the main push would therefore be the overcrowding, in terms of pull... well, the reasons not to leave are part of it, religious and political freedom to do.. most anything within the law. That and the economy, growing at incredibly high rates, GDP per capita continues to increase, so I think that might draw poorer less educated immigrants, who would then fill up the lower-paying jobs, leaving the actual citizens to invest their capital in new businesses, make more money, et cetera.

so here's the thread to my Factbook... voila (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=400996&highlight=factbook) and hopefully that would help. only problem with the map is it lacks any placement of urban dwellings... i'll see if i can fix that in the near future, but for now, if someone picks a likely spot for a city, there more than likely is a city there, and if not, i'll make it up as i go along, not as if that's any different than anything we do here in NS...

Taxes would normally be a concern but because of cultural/political reasons I won't get into here, the rich are very unlikely to stray. Similar reasons effect the 'liberals' and shanty towners.
The most likely out-migrants would be those looking for jobs.

Id be interested, the most likely incomers to Nova would be those seeking jobs and money, and the outgoers would be escaping the mega-corporations or just trying to find some space of their own - Nova's population is crowded into MegaCities to protect them from the harsh environment outside the city walls.

what i would imagine for the UKA is a high net migration rate, helping to exacerbate the overpopulation problem the country faces. So i'm probably looking for something like a 7-8% inflow and a 2.5-3% outflow...

i guess for inflow, i'd be looking for citizens from countries that have not so good economies and people want a chance to make some money, that or the repressed people from some country - repressed in terms of either religion or politics.

for outflow, it'd be my wealthier people looking for land... literally, they'd want open space to buy up and have to pay very little in taxes. not crime-ridden areas either... so scenic countries with few taxes that has a lot of open land

that's all for starters i suppose

I have rounded up about 1,000,000 religious people. I want to get rid of them, and I am either thinking of kiling them or leting them leave the country.

Screw that, I'll just let all my immigrants into my neighbors, when they are struggling to accomodate them, I will invade when their economy is struggling. Muahahahahhahhahhahah!!!!

For my people, the emigration factors would be from the environment (living in the North Atlantic, too much rain, pollution from heavy industry), the economy (heavy specialisation on book publishing, information technology, and vehicle manufacturing plus high spending on education don't always mean high paying jobs for all), financial (ridiculously high taxes, though one of these days I'll lower them!), and political or religious reasons (the local and government culture frowns upon extremism of all types).

For immigration, I've a very good economy (frightening, in fact), a good history of observing human rights and supporting/sponsoring immigration, and decent political rights (though my rating dropped to "below average" recently). Shipbuilding is a major industry here and one that requires trained engineers, managers, and workers.
