Scientists at FGI Laboratories have found a way to mass produce high quality diamonds. Previous to this breakthrough, Japanese Antarctarctica was forced to import most of it's diamonds (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8532726&postcount=107). The high quality, 10-20 carat diamonds are made from a chemical vapor deposition process. This enables the labs to grow diamonds at a much faster rate than other methods that produce artificial diamonds.
Not only will the diamond fashion industry be affected, but the industrial applications for diamonds will increase. Japanese Antarctican Companies alone spend over $3 Billion per year to acquire diamonds for various optical uses. There are already plans to use diamond based optics in military hardware...
