The television went blank at 2058. This always happened when the Emperor was going to give an announcement. Then, several seconds later, white text appeared: THE EMPEROR WILL BRIEF THE EMPIRE SHORTLY. Everyone knew what that meant, something big had happened. With everyone glued to their television sets, life in the Empire almost halted to a stop. Radio would be interrupted as well as people focused more on their radios than their driving. There was always an influx in the number of fender-benders and road rage during a speech. Someday, that would be fixed.
At 2100, on cue and on time, the Emperor graced the screens. A smile from ear to ear, it was obvious that he had good news. "Ladies and gentlemen of the Empire. I greet you tonight with good news. I hope that it finds all of you well. Just a few days ago, the government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ceeded the territory of Iceland, Grenada, and the Virgin Islands to Layartebian rule. This is a great thing for our Empire. It is another step towards complete control over the Caribbean. Trade and transportation will flourish.
"However, the largest attention is drawn to Iceland. Control over Iceland guarantees an open shipping lane into the North Sea. Our allies in Europe will be most appreciated with this. We have deicded though that Iceland will be granted the status of an Autonomous Republic, like Kaliningrad and Ireland. With this, we are willing to spend $500B in military upgrades.
"We are commissioning the following: 3,338 fixed-wing aircraft, 5,317 vehicles, 1,000 rotary-wing aircraft, and 20 ships. In addition, we will be sending a total of 263,500 soldiers to man Iceland. This increase will require more hirings. With 1.59% unemployment, the goal is to bring that number under 1%.
