Constant Vigilance...Or Lack Thereof [Open]

It was a dark night. Darker than dark. To call this particular night dark was a pathetic understatement. The candles of the night had gone out. The soft, white orb of light had been blocked by the thick clouds that covered the sky like a blanket. The waves licked the shore, but one could barely see them. The darkness kept everything in eternal shade. Well, almost everything. A few searchlights sent their beams to slowly move across the beach, the sky, the dock, anything within range. Two soldiers carrying battle rifles walked up and down the dock, conversing in hushed voices.

"Those clouds are promising rain."

"How good of you to notice."

"You don't have to be sarcastic about it."

"No, I have to. I'm sick of it. It's poured at least every day for the past two weeks!"

"Well, you can't blame Mother Nature. You were the one who wanted a transfer here or to any other military base along the coast. You wanted palm trees, sun, white beaches-"

"And I got some of that. But mostly it's been rain."

"What did you expect? Did it ever penetrate your thick skull that any coastal base was going to be near water?"

"Of course, I know what coastal means. But I didn't expect so much rain. I mean, there's enough water already. And all those idiotic sergeants have found excuses to keep us from going on some R&R when there's been dry spells."

"Careful what you say. Those sergeants may be idiotic according to you, but they're nasty when they're insulted."

"All sergeants are."

"I suppose so-Wait! What was that?"

"What was what?"

"Shut up, I heard something!"

Both men strained their ears for any sort of sound, but none came except the washing of the waves against the sand.

"See, nothing there."

"I swear I could have heard something-"

"You swear too much. Let's go back; our shift is almost over."

Both men headed back to the base when a sudden noise distracted them.

"See, I told you there was a noise."

"Fine, you win. Now stop gloating, we need to check this out."

The two soldiers jumped down from the pier, their ears strained for any further sound. When none came, they started combing the beaches, very slowly, as to not make a lot of noise.

"I see something!"

"Where?"

"Over there! A dark shape!"

"I see it, too. Let's go over there."

Both of them hurried towards the shape, unaware that another dark figure was slowly making its way towards them. The two soldiers finally approached the dark shape, and realized it was a man. He was trembling with fear. One of the soldiers got out a flashlight and directed it towards the man's face.

"Who are you?"

The man didn't answer, though he was still trembling.

"Who are you?!"

The man still didn't answer.

"You do not have clearance to land on this beach! You are under arrest-"

The soldier's words were cut short as another man slit his throat with a combat knife. His companion was also dead. The murderer extended a hand to the man who was trembling, and pulled him up. The murderer spoke a few words into a radio, and several minutes later a small troop transport craft landed on the beach. Several more men jumped out, carrying equipment and supplies. Each took their time assembling their weapons. Soon, all were ready. But this was not the final step. All of the men except one hurried up the beach. The one man who stayed behind had a rocket launcher. He aimed at a few gas tanks. And fired.

The gas tanks went up in a dull orange explosion. Alarms blared as the man rushed up the beach and out of sight...

"And in recent news, the Ivytia Coastal Military Base was attacked last night. Two people were killed, and a rocket launcher apparently caused several spare gas tanks to explode. Prime Jaghuran Joseph Balen, Commander Joe Greyson, and many others agree that it was a terrorist attack. However, all evidence has made it clear that this was not any hit-and-run attack usually performed by terrorists. Several sets of footprints were found to lead from the shoreline, up the beach, and out onto the grass. A landing craft was also discovered, with a strange symbol, a red X in the middle of a black circle. Prime Jaghuran Joseph Balen has asked the international community for information of the organization responsible and military aid to capture the terrorists and bring down the organization behind all this. We'll have more on this story as it develops. Meanwhile, you are advised to contact your local government about any suspicious characters. I'm Larry Gedenshaw, for Channel 9 News, signing out."

OOC: Ivytia is just a coastal city, in case you were wondering.
