And stickies... LOTS of stickies. Go to 'The International Incidents Consolidation Sticky' at the top of the thread, read it, then read all the threads that it links to. Also a good knowledge of science, military stuff, diplomacy, geo-politics, etc, will help.

Practice, take the time to think ahead before you post, and try and find as many friends to practice RPing with in your spare time as you can.

For one, don't n00k someone outright. Let a plot develop in any war scenario before you break out the nukes.
Never use smilies. They make you look stupid on these forums. Spell correctly and use proper grammar. Take the time to add unnecessary amounts of detail to your RPing posts to make the characters in them seem alive. Which to you seems more alive?
1: "President John Baker addressed the nation, saying, 'We are going to war.'"
or
2: "As the spotlights cooked down on John Baker, President of Roleplaying, he nervously adjusted his tie and fumbled with his cuff links. He stepped forward to the podium as sweat started to bead on his forehead. 'It is with great regret,' he started, 'that I must inform you that we have been plunged into a war with Ubern00ks.'"
Also, make sure to know what godmoding is (just search the forums for Godmoding) and make sure you never do it.

Read some of the RPs by Generic empire, Doomingsland, Borman Empire, Sarzonia, Praetonia, Hamptonshire, The Parthians, Automagfreek, Layarteb, and The Island of Rose.
Whyfore you list only MT nations, fewl?
You get better by doing and doing and reading and considering.
And you forgot the "In Harem's Way" thread, which is a lovely example of roleplaying. (*shameless plug*)
